Description

Nicholas Flamel was born in Paris on 28 September 1330. Nearly seven hundred years later, he is acknowledged as the greatest Alchemyst of his day. It is said that he discovered the secret of eternal life. The records show that he died in 1418. But his tomb is empty and Nicholas Flamel lives. The secret of eternal life is hidden within the book he protects – the Book of Abraham the Mage. It’s the most powerful book that has ever existed. In the wrong hands, it will destroy the world. And that’s exactly what Dr. John Dee plans to do when he steals it. Humankind won’t know what’s happening until it’s too late. And if the prophecy is right, Sophie and Josh Newman are the only ones with the power to save the world as we know it. Sometimes legends are true. And Sophie and Josh Newman are about to find themselves in the middle of the greatest legend of all time.

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐The Alchemist is just one book of this remarkable series of books, and it is better to comment on the whole series as I just finished reading them all, back to back. I’m 76, been reading sci fi and fantasy since I was 12 or so, that is a slew of books. And that includes all the recent series of books that have been published as “young adult” literature, and I have found them all entertaining reading. And, I have to put this series by Michael Scott at the top of the list, more interesting characters, more twists and turns and surprize in the plot that you can imagine, and not a dull moment through the whole series. I really recommend them if you have any taste at all for this kind of literature. Just give yourself some space to read, once you start, it is very difficult to stop. Enjoy!

⭐1. Dynamic group of characters.2. Rich with fun history and scenic set ups.3. Written in an easy to digest style.4. Writer constantly re-describes characters, scenes and plot even within the same book. It becomes repetitive and obvious filler to extend the novel.5. Decent amount of grammar/spelling errors.6. The story could have been wrapped in 3-4 books instead of 6 so you may find yourself skipping chapters.7. A lot of unnecessary product references that cheapens the story line.8. The story is NOT central king focused on Nicholas Flamel. It’s focus is a pair of twins.

⭐I’m reading this book with my dyslexic middle schoolers. They love the exciting plot and excellent vocabulary. We are all disappointed when class ends as each day is a new plot twist. The icing on the cake is that this series has made them all excited about the dreaded task of reading! So much so that they all want to read the entire series!! If that doesn’t sell everyone on wanting to read a new and innovative series for teens to adults, I don’t know what will. ♥️

⭐The author truly put a lot of time and research into this book. The ancient beings and creatures were fascinating and I enjoyed my own bit of research learning more about some of the lesser known ones. Some of the famous appearances of immortals in the series truly made me smile, much like the feeling you get when you see a famous actor doing a cameo for a movie. The storyline was engaging and I never felt bored or tried to rush though pages. I felt like I was part of the story, just swept away in the magic and fantasy. There was one part in the last book that really stuck out to me, which seems so minor now that I write about it but it made me put the book down and really think. A child was forcefully taken from the mother, the author describes how the mother dropped to her knees ‘holding her ears’. That is EXACTLY what would happen, the sound of your child screaming, tormented is unbearable, and for the author to know that really shocked me. On to a lighter note, the author’s ability to really pull me in was exceptional, the storyline was original with hints of ancient mysteries threaded through. I could not have enjoyed this series more and look forward to exploring more of his work.

⭐Josh Newman is hard at work one day when a man by the name of Dr. John Dee enters the building and begins a full out magical battle with his boss, Nick Fleming, while his twin sister Sophie, who works across the street, comes to the scene of the crime with her boss and Nick’s wife, Perry Fleming. Nick and Perry Fleming are really Nicholas and Perenelle Flamel and they are hundreds of years old. Nick was said to be the greatest alchemyst ever and he knows the secret to life (how he and Perry stay alive). Dee is a necromancer and is doing everything in his power to get rid of Nick and Perry for good. He takes a very important book from them called the Book of Abraham the Mage, and without it, things can go terribly wrong. Especially when put into the wrong hands. Nick sees Sophie and Josh as the subject of the prophecy that he knows… the twins hold the power to both destroy and save the world. Nick takes Sophie and Josh to meet Hekate who has the power to awaken the twins’ powers. Dee does his dirty work and tries to trick people because it’s what he does best, but it doesn’t really work in his favor. Sophie and Josh are taken on the adventure of a lifetime. This novel was very well written. It is one I have read multiple times. It is full of mystery, magic, and thrilling adventure. It leaves readers wanting more. If you enjoy mystery and magic, this is the perfect book for you! Especially because there are more books to follow in this series. One thing I like about the storyline is how Josh and Sophie fit in. They have a unique brother/sister bond that makes the story better. I’m not one to be interested in these kinds of books, but I enjoyed reading this very much, and I look forward to reading more of the books in this series.

⭐Loved this book it’s full of legends, myths, and real people, time travel, sorcery, and magic woven into this sprawling world. It’s a classic good vs evil story but you’re not always sure who’s good and who’s evil and mixed with a healthy dose of redemption. High adventure as the main characters careen from one situation to another. This is the first book in a 6 book series. Loved this book loved the series. More Please.

⭐The Alchemyst is the first book in a thrilling series about magic ann ancient creatures, with the main characters being the two married immortals, Perenelle and Nicholas Flamel who are tasked with guarding of a mystical book called the Codex and finding the prophesised “Legend Twins” who eventually must save the world. It starts slowly but soon becomes an action packed romp through a world under threat and filled with fantastical characters. The Authors penmanship was perfect, creating personalities so detailed and original that they could’ve been real. The villain and chaaracters are incredibly complex; and thee plot is simple but detailed and well done (if you see what I’m getting at here). I found mself in love with this book and its characters – it was impossible to put down. I’m attending school and work at our Library, so I requested that we could buy the series for the school. It was a thoroughly enjoyable read- I would reccomend this for ages 10+.Fantastic job, Author!(·_·)

⭐I bought a set of 3 books from world of books with the label ‘Very Good’ ito quality, 2 out of the 3 I would say were of ‘Good’ quality, (i.e. the corners of the book had ears and the spines were creased), but nevertheless, for the cost of the book, one cant complain too much, all 3 books arrived remarkably fast and were dispatched within an hour of me ordering them

⭐This is a fast paced book that hardly stops for a breather all through the entire series- started as it meant to continue as it were. The author’s knowledge of ancient history is deep and he uses this well. All Scott’s books are beautifully written and interesting, but beware- there is an author by the same name.

⭐Reading this with my son and just finished this and bought the next one in the series. We are both loving it so far, with the mention of historical characters and some are immortal brings a bit of fun. It is very fast past which makes it ideal reading. The characterization and their motivation are very believable and little or no plot holes, which is a big hate for me. Would highly recommend this for a tween and up as they will enjoy this and the two main characters as well!

⭐I first read this book many many years ago, in my native language, Estonian. As a kid who loved myths and legends growing up, this was a special kind of treat. So now that I have access to the wonderful bookstores of UK, I thought that it was about time I relived my childhood.Somehow I remembered Scott’s writing style as more fluent but that might have been the translation I read at the time. That is in no way to say that it is bad. It is great, just not my favourite. Just like I have quite a specific taste in writing style that makes pages fly by for me, there are many people for whom this could be the perfect cup of tea.But lets get to the good parts before you start to think that I did not like this book, which would be a colossal lie (really Pinocchio, get a grip).First of all, the story. If you like mythology, any kind of mythology, then this is an amazing book. I cannot even imagine the amount of work that went into creating the world and backstory of this book. The idea that Nicholas Flamel is still alive is an intriguing. Doctor John Dee actually was an advisor to Queen Elizabeth. And then the gods and goddesses of old: Hekate, Morrigan, Bastet, the list goes on. Combining so many different mythologies and stories could turn out to be so ridiculous. But Scott creates a world in which they co-exist in a way that makes sense and is exciting beyond belief. The only bone I have to pick with this book is that almost none of the characters were clear-cut. I mean I like the mysterious stranger as much as the next fan girl. But while one of the twins, Josh, got a fair share of backstory, I felt like Sophie was a little neglected. I felt like they were supposed to steal the show but ended up being the talented sidekicks.Scathach remained very vague and I would have loved to learn more about the ancient Irish warrior. Then again I liked that you could never really decide if Nicholas Flamel was as good as he seemed to be or not. That said I will hold on to the right of changing my opinion after reading the next books. It might turn out to be one of those stories which are good but not amazing and then something in the later books makes it all click and you just have to put the book down for a moment, stare at nothing and say: “S***…“All in all „The Alchemyst“ was an good read. It lures you in, has a lot of action and makes you (okay, me) giddy with excitement when you see a familiar legend brought into the fold. I think when I first read it I was in the intended demographic, I was about 14 at the time. And it was a bit better the first time around. Therefore by my personal opinion “The Alchemyst” ranks 3.5 stars. But it is worth mentioning that half of one of those is a nostalgia star.—The review is also on my blog:www.thefantasylibrarian.blogspot.co.uk
