Description

Men in Black meets Janet Evanovich’s Stephanie Plum in the new urban fantasy novel starring seer Makenna Fraser and her fellow agents at Supernatural Protection & Investigation. The agents of Supernatural Protection & Investigations (SPI) know that fighting evil is a full-time job, especially when a new designer drug—with mind-blowing side effects—hits the streets… It’s called Brimstone. And after the first few hits, you’ll see every supernatural beast sharing the sidewalk, train, or office with you. After that, you’ll start seeing the really scary stuff. I’m Makenna Fraser, seer for the SPI. And the collateral damage caused by Brimstone is something I’d like to unsee: dead drug dealers missing their hearts—and souls. Because your local pusher doesn’t stand a chance against the new cartel muscling its way into New York. And since the drug can only be produced with magic and molten brimstone fresh from Hell, that means a rift to the underworld is open somewhere in the city. And when—not if—the cartel loses control of it, well… It’s going to be Hell on earth.

Lisa is a voracious collector of fountain pens, teapots, and teacups, both vintage and modern. She lives on a small farm in North Carolina with her husband, three spoiled-rotten retired racing greyhounds, and enough deer and woodland creatures to fill a Disney movie.

⭐Another awesome book by Ms Shearin. It has all the hallmarks of her previous works – quirky but complex characters, humor, adventure, and so forth.Brimstone Deception picks up directly after the Dragon Conspiracy. Specifically, it starts at the lunch we are teased with in DC’s epilogue. Like her previous works, the story takes place over the course of just a few days… and yes, action galore along with the team trying to figure what is going on and who is behind it.We get plenty of the yummy Rake, always a good thing. We also get to learn more about him, but as we learn more about him, a few more questions are raised regarding Mac. Even also get more of a sense of Mac – what motivates her and she is thinking. It is done quite nicely through conversations she has with others instead of through the narrative since it is told from 1st person. With also see some relationship evolving or maybe becoming clearer.A wonderful read – I did not want to put it down and am eagerly awaiting the next book. If you enjoyed Ms Shearin’s other works, then you will enjoy this one also. If you have never read her books before, I highly recommend trying one. While this is a stand alone, I think readers will get a little more enjoyment if they read the previous books in the series.Oh, and like the previous book – there are nods to fans of her Raine Benare series in this book.

⭐Makenna Fraser, SPI agent and seer, has a new case to investigate with her partner, Ian Byrne that involves a new drug called Brimstone. The drug allows the user to see supernatural beings beneath their glamour or camouflage. That’s fine for the elves, goblins, vampires, etc. in the city, but not so great for the unsuspecting humans that get their hands on the stuff. Of course, the drug is just the tip of the iceberg, someone is taking out drug dealers in a very nasty way, and demons from Hell have something to do with it. Another exciting, fast-paced, action-filled adventure for Mac and Ian. And then there’s Rake Danescu, the rich, handsome goblin that wants Mac, although she’s not sure she can trust his motives – does he want her for her seer abilities, or her personally? And she’s not sure how she feels about him either. I really enjoy this series, each adventure is a treat, and I look forward to the next one, The Ghoul Vendetta.

⭐While I liked the book, it did not keep my attention as well as the first two books in the series. This book was very repetitive. It spent too much time explaining the inner workings of the SPI (things explained in the first two books), characters were reintroduced as if they had not been in the last book, and even things that were talked about in one chapter were repeated and/or summarized (unnecessarily) later in the book. Mac likes Krispy Kreme doughnuts, and always stops when the red light is on. I know this because she told the reader twice. The main story could have been much more intense and interesting, but it seemed secondary to Makenna Fraser’s social life, living arrangements, and self doubts – which are all good story issues when properly molded into the overall story.I still have hopes for this series, but the next book is going to have to do a better job of combining story elements.

⭐Squeeeee! I was quoted in this book from my review of “The Dragon Conspiracy”!In this installment, Shearin dials down the threat level; instead of possible global destruction, it’s more localized. I was happy to see that as it’s a challenge to successfully and believably have a constant of world-threatening events. That said, the stakes are still high; Brimstone is a drug designed by supernaturals that only works on humans, with devastating consequences. The story is basically a mystery as Mak and Ian try to track down the source of the drug, the person killing witnesses, and stopping a potential invasion. Shearin weaves in her usual humor and action, a bit of romance, and further character development of both Mak and Ian. Mak’s abilities are growing, which I have mixed feelings about; I don’t want to see her become some rare, all-powerful being. Rake, her goblin suitor seems to be softening a bit; I hope Shearin lets him keep his edges as he’s a delightful devil with a skewed perspective who’s already pretty well-developed.While this story didn’t grab me as much as the first two., I enjoyed it and I’m looking forward to the next book. And I still want to go out for drinks with the characters. :)Some favorite quotes:Magic exists, monsters are real, and fighting the forces of is a full-time job. At least there’s hazard pay.”Expanding one’s knowledge is good.” “So is being able to eat lunch.” I said. “Fill us with knowledge when we’re not standing over the visual aid.” “Where’s your curiosity?” “Hiding behind the remains of my appetite.””Isn’t anyone going to tell me I’m wrong?” “I make it a point never to lie to my agents,” Ms. Sagadraco said. “Ma’am, I wouldn’t mind the occasional happy, fluffy, white one.”

⭐I really enjoy Lisa Shearin’s writing – she has a quirky sense of humor that meshes perfectly with my own. The latest installment in the SPI Files has plenty of good chuckles, but there are also scenes that tugged a bit on my heartstrings and made me realize just how much I like these characters. Yes, many of them are the usual oddball Urban Fantasy archetypes, but their basic humanity shines through to make them friends I want to spend time with. The main characters continue to grow in compelling ways; bringing in Rake as a love interest for Mac is allowing Mac’s relationship with Ian to be much more varied and interesting. And the unusual characters? I don’t know how Ms Shearin came up with telepathic baby demons, but they are a hoot! And their mama is pretty cool, too! There continue to be hints in this book of some cross-over between the SPI Files and Ms Shearin’s earlier Raine Benares series; I am looking forward to seeing where she goes with the idea. Wherever it is, I am sure it will be a rollicking fun ride!

⭐There is always a hesitation when I receive the latest book in a series via pre-order. As I have the memory of a goldfish the thoughts running through my head are variously: Did I pre-order this? Why did I pre-order this? Have I read all the other books in the series? What happened in the last book? Who are the characters? Will I understand what is going on? Most of these questions arise because I tend to binge read a series and after I have read the last published book I have to wait so long that I have gone off and started a pash for a different series (or genre). So, with some trepidation I started this book. Pretty quickly I recalled the main characters: Makenzie, a human seer; Ian her partner at SPI; Yasha the shifter driver and the various other characters who work at SPI.The book picks up just hours after the events of the previous book The Dragon Conspiracy. Mac is having lunch with Rake (the Goblin who can best be described in Mac’s own words when she says to him: “You know a lot about spies, espionage, and strategic advantages for a billionaire playboy, real estate mogul, and owner of an exclusive sex club”). Ian is eating lunch at the same café when a human customers suddenly starts screaming about monsters – somehow he can see beneath the glamours that the supernatural customers and staff are wearing. It appears that New York is in the grip of a new designer drug, possibly of supernatural origin, which allows humans and supernaturals alike to see through glamours and know if people are telling the truth. Added to which known drug-dealers (of the supernatural variety) and their henchmen are also being murdered in a horrifically supernatural way, each of the bodies had a brand on the shoulder and their hearts had been ripped out of their chests. As Mac notes about the first body “It had been branded with a single hoofprint. Though considering the presence of the sulphur smell, I figured we weren’t dealing with a homicidal cow.” Soon the bodies are piling up thick and fast, as are the suspects.I really enjoyed this third book in the series. The action is almost non-stop and Mac is a likeable character. Although there are references to the events of the previous books I think someone new to the series could pick this up with little difficulty. Although there are some common threads I don’t yet see an over-reaching arc – having not read Lisa Shearin’s other series I don’t know whether that is something we can expect from future books, or indeed whether there are gentle clues in these books which I haven’t yet picked up.Anyway, there are some great lines, sadly I haven’t worked out how to copy and paste quotes with ease and I’m too lazy to type any more, the pace is good and the characters are engaging. I look forward to seeing where this series leads. And yes, I will be pre-ordering the next one.Recommended for anyone who enjoys urban fantasy detective novels featuring a wide range of paranormal creatures, high on the sarcasm and low on the romance.

⭐You can rely on the SPI Files books. You know there will be twists and turns, lots of action and characters you love. The only thing predictable about them is the quality and enjoyment. Makenna Fraser is just one of those fantastically written characters you’d love to spend time with. I can’t recommend them highly enough.

⭐An enjoyable read and a new discovery. A fantasy whodunnit with strong characters and dry humour. This is one in a series of books with this set of characters. I have gone on to read them all with great enjoyment and eagerly await the next instalment..

⭐Loving the entire series. Was absolutely glued to this one. Can’t wait for the 4th book to come out next year.

⭐as good as usual. have read it twice in one month
