Description

The Jackal. A tall, blond Englishman with opaque, gray eyes. A killer at the top of his profession. A man unknown to any secret service in the world. An assassin with a contract to kill the world’s most heavily guarded man.

One man with a rifle who can change the course of history. One man whose mission is so secretive not even his employers know his name. And as the minutes count down to the final act of execution, it seems that there is no power on earth that can stop the Jackal.

User’s Reviews

Review “Forsyth is truly the world’s reigning master of suspense”—Los Angeles Times “When it comes to espionage, international intrigue, and suspense, Frederick Forsyth is a master.” —The Washington Post Book World “Inventive, organized, believable, and absolutely spellbinding…Suspense fiction at its very best and a cliffhanger par excellence.”—The Philadelphia Inquirer “A masterpiece tour de force of crisp, sharp, suspenseful writing…It’s an awful cliché to say that ‘you won’t be able to put this book down,’ but cliché or not, it’s the truth.”—The Wall Street Journal Review After the advent of the spy novel, it was Forsyth who re-internationalized’ the thriller and reintroduced the broad political background missing since John Buchan. The Day of the Jackal triumphantly makes us empathize with a cold-blooded assassin, and believe in the possibility of his success in killing de Gaulle, even when we know Le General died in his bed! –Kirkus Reviews, United KingdomCompelling, utterly enthralling….Some of the tensest thriller writing I can remember reading. –Sunday Express (London)A masterpiece tour de force of crisp, sharp, suspenseful writing. –Wall Street Journal –This text refers to an alternate kindle_edition edition. From AudioFile Deputy Commissaire Claude Lebel is in a race against time to catch the cold-blooded assassin known only as “The Jackal,” who is hired to kill France’s president, Charles de Gaulle. This classic thriller translates well to audio. The clear timeline and step-by-step presentation of the backstory and the investigation are tense but easy to follow. Narrator Simon Prebble is the perfect complement to Forsythe’s matter-of-fact style of writing. Prebble’s steady delivery allows the plot to unfold without descriptive sections becoming boring, and his subtle characterizations are all that is required to distinguish the key players. Prebble’s clipped English accent helps to conjure the atmosphere of Europe in the 1960s. Reviews from Amazon users, collected at the time the book is getting published on UniedVRG. It can be related to shiping or paper quality instead of the book content:

⭐ This is such a good book that I consider it a jewel. In short, it is spellbinding.

⭐ One of the smartest fiction books I’ve ever read; brilliant plotting and intricate details that come together at the end.

⭐ Could not put it down – It was as if I was living the story – I felt as though I was there – well researched

⭐ A well written piece of historic fiction. Despite the excellent writing and Forsyth’s obvious extensive research, I found myself bored with the overly long descriptions and the side-tracks into peripheral story lines. For example his description of the rifle used by the assassin takes up a full chapter which may be technically brilliant but didn’t hold my interest. To me this novel was half-again longer then the material could support.

⭐ I think this is still a terrific book even after 50 years. Forsyth’s descriptions of the Jackal’s plot to assassinate President De Gaulle and Commissaire Lebel’s efforts to thwart him are incredibly detailed and well-written. It’s a real thriller. There are a few differences between the book and the 1973 movie featuring Edward Fox as the Jackal. The movie has all the preliminary work of forging the fake ID papers and the construction of the gun for the assassination taking place in Italy, whereas the book has them taking place in Belgium. The Jackal only uses Italy to rent the Alpha Romeo sports car with the steel chassis and then entering France from the south. The book also does a better job developing the character of Jacqueline Dumas. I suppose this is normal for converting a book into a movie — something has to be shortened to keep the attention of the movie audience.

⭐ Fans of James Bond, Jason Bourne or Sherlock Holmes will appreciate the thoughtful plot. Extra star was awarded for being one of the pioneers of the brainy action thriller novels. I appreciated the authors ability to be true to the story and build believable ancillary characters. The tech and weapons seem a bit dated now but they should as this story is almost fifty years old but still a really enjoyable read.

⭐ In my humble opinion….. Its way over rated. Story line went on for ever with out any action until the last few pages. Book was like walking through a mud bog with heavy hip boots on. But, I understand many, many people think it was just a GREAT story. It must be me then? I saw a movie, years ago, called “The Jackal” It was nothing like this book. Terrific movie….

⭐ Although this is 2019 I was engrossed from the first chapter of this book written many years ago. As usual the movie of this book could not capture the depth of this masterpiece . Highly recommended if one likes in depth detailed thrillers.

⭐ I have seen the motion picture several times. (The original, not the awful remake.) The book is so well plotted that the tension of seeing the events unfold in it still holds up. The attention to detail, not just of the plot, but the characters and the locations is top notch. If you have seen the movie, reading the book is still worth your time. If you have not seen the movie, you are in for a real treat. No doubt other reviews have explained the basic plot. I won’t rehash it here. But it will keep you guessing at things to the very end. If you appreciate good political thrillers and have not read this book yet, you will not be disappointed when you do. It is a classic for good reason.

⭐ I’m not really a fan of novels, preferring true stories instead — especially anything and everything about U-boats. But I’m glad I made an exception in this case. What a great book! I really looked forward to picking it up every day when I had the chance. It was hard to remind myself that it was just fiction. I read “The Odessa File”, which was also good, and am ordering “The Fox”. Great author!
