Description
From New York Times bestselling author James Rollins comes a novel of boundless imagination and meticulous research, a book that dares to answer a frightening question at the heart of America: Could the founding of the United States be based on a fundamental lie? The shocking truth lies hidden within the ruins of an impossibility, a lost colony of the Americas vanished in time and cursed into oblivion. A place known only as The Devil Colony.
Deep in the Rocky Mountains, a gruesome discovery–hundreds of mummified bodies–stirs international attention and fervent controversy. Despite doubts about the bodies’ origins, the local Native American Heritage Commission lays claim to the prehistoric remains, along with the strange artifacts found in the same cavern: gold plates inscribed with an unfathomable script.
During a riot at the dig site, an anthropologist dies horribly, burned to ashes in a fiery explosion in plain view of television cameras. All evidence points to a radical group of Native Americans, including one agitator, a teenage firebrand who escapes with a vital clue to the murder and calls on the one person who might help–her uncle, Painter Crowe, Director of Sigma Force.
To protect his niece and uncover the truth, Painter will ignite a war among the nation’s most powerful intelligence agencies. Yet an even greater threat looms as events in the Rocky Mountains have set in motion a frightening chain reaction, a geological meltdown that threatens the entire western half of the U.S.
From the volcanic peaks of Iceland to the blistering deserts of the American Southwest, from the gold vaults of Fort Knox to the bubbling geysers of Yellowstone, Painter Crowe joins forces with Commander Gray Pierce to penetrate the shadowy heart of a dark cabal, one that has been manipulating American history since the founding of the thirteen colonies.
But can Painter discover the truth–one that could topple governments–before it destroys all he holds dear?

⭐ I have read some of Rollins books, but not in order. About a month ago I decided to go back to the beginning and read them in order, and thereby purchasing the books I had not read. And, since I was at at I might as well buy the audio books, too, right? I am amazed at the in-depth works of these novels. Somehow he blends friendship, military actions, science, the spiritual, secret societies, conspiracies, family and love into books you cannot stop reading until the very end. And if you take time to read the information he writes after the books end…well, let’s just say it makes you want to hug your loved ones, then take a nice cool drink and go sit on the deck and wait for the end of the world.
⭐ This is my first (and last) Rollins book. Sixteen percent into the Kindle book and I find a man shooting a Ruger Blackhawk. Rollins said he pulled the trigger again and again until the clip was empty. A RUGER BLACKHAWK IS A 6-SHOT REVOLVER! Even if it had been a Glock or SIG semi-automatic, it still wouldn’t have a clip. It’s called a MAGAZINE! I am absolutely sick of reading action novels from authors that have no idea about the guns that are important to their genre. Anyway, I quit reading and won’t bother trying another Rollins (science fiction) action novel.
⭐ Not exactly being an avid reader, I first was introduced to James Rollins Sigma Force series book by happenstance, an event I am thoroughly grateful for. The Map Of Bones book was picked up my girlfriend as a means to pass time between lengthy flights between Europe from the U.S. Fortunately for me, the in-flight media held her attention both directions leaving the book unread for several months. In a spout of boredom, and in pity of the unopened book, I cracked the cover and was immediately hooked. Any one who has read a James Rollins book, I’m sure, can relate.Being hooked on the Sigma Force series, I recently acquired the Devil Colony in order to appease the Rollins’ addiction. In normal style, the book opens with a peek into the not so distant past, this time it the late 1700’s in Kentucky Territory, with a mysterious story of treasure, mystery, and murder with ties to the Founding Fathers of the United States, Lewis and Clark, Secret Societies, and Native Americans. The story only gets more engaging and exciting as it moves into the present, when a lost treasure resurfaces and threatens to destroy the world, the fate resting once again on the cunning and strength of the infamous Sigma Force. James Rollins once again delivers an evocative book impossibly weaving technology, history, and religion. Buy this book.
⭐ Were all our answers left in Utah? Painter Crowe, director of Sigma Force, joins strength and knowledge with Commander Gray Pierce to learn the dark secrets hidden for ages. Unbreakable codes. Mysteries about the native tribes who populated the New World. Margaret Grantham was an anthropology professor at Brigham Young University overseeing the Native Indian outreach program. Professor Henry Kanosh was a Shoshone historian, raised as a Mormon, and Maggie’s working partner. A short tryst proved they were better as friends than as lovers.WAHYA had recruited Kai. They were young, proud and intolerant. Now, she was a saboteur with a backpack of C4 explosive. They found a golden cat skull and gold plates hidden inside stone boxes. Painter, a member of DARPA was called in to investigate a shadowy spy organization. Only five people in the world knew the full details. Kat was his assistant.According to legend, the Great Spirit still haunted the cave. Inside, the cave was hot and filled with hundreds of desiccated, leathery skinned bodies. Charlie, a half Ute, is killed by his peyote crazed grandfather, who then, commits suicide.Seichan, a skilled assassin, works for Sigma. She escaped The Guild, only to discover its links to Benjamin Franklin and the founders of America. By trespassing ancient curses and breaching the inner sanctum of the Holy of the Holies’ Chamber at the heart of the Mormon Temple, Henry could see the brilliance of Joseph Smith’s original tablets. Volcanoes now erupted in Iceland and hydrothermal explosions rocked Yellowstone. The Guild determined to destroy all connecting evidence. The family weed in the garden was Ghent. Henry understood the connections instantly. Cool shivers of understanding tingled along his spine.
⭐ Plot elements may be discussed. “The Devil Colony” is a great read that keeps the saga of the Sigma Force going strong. New readers of the series should begin with the first book and follow the character development and team chronology, because this book delves into some of the interpersonal chemistry and past disruptions to team integrity that newbies might find confusing. As usual, there is an evil plot to destroy the World (literally), and it’s up to the brains and brawn of the Sigma team to save the day. For readers not familiar with Sigma, these special agents are not just secret agents, but have been recruited especially for their scientific prowess as well. Mr Rollins has created some inventive and intriguing anthropological implications for history as we know it, and it is all wrapped up in a fast-paced story that keeps the pages turning. There are some writers who have a knack for making words flow that fill your mind so easily with images, and Mr Rollins has that technique. I did withhold one star not so much for a technical reason, but my personal reaction to the human interest elements of the story is that they were a bit overdone. I want my heroes to be near bulletproof, but too much emotion makes them too normal; and while that may have been the objective, I prefer a bit more stoicism. Nonetheless, a very satisfactory read.
⭐ Any book by James Rollins is a good read. All the books have heart pounding excitement and make you wonder how the “good guys” will get out of their current predicament and are filled with a mixture of real life science and fiction and, at the end of each book, Mr. Rollins explains what is real science and what isn’t. Absolutely love his books!
⭐ James Rollins is well-known for his Sigma Force series (as well as his standalone books, Jake Ransom series, and the book based on the movie of “Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull) and is (in my opinion) the best thriller/adventure author of this generation (although Steve Berry comes in as a close second). I would highly recommend all of his books but I think his latest Sigma Force book, The Devil Colony, is his best yet! His books are thoroughly researched and contain interesting facts but also show his great imagination and are fast-paced with never a dull moment. In The Devil Colony, he takes a fictional idea (that America’s beginning was based on a lie), mixes it with breathtaking locations and heart-stopping action, adds a generous portion of well-researched facts and comes up with a best-selling adventure that I literally could not put down. I read until 3:00 in the morning so I could finish the book. It’s a non-stop roller coaster of action that leaves you wondering what can possibly happen next. I highly recommend all of his books, particularly the Sigma Force books (which I would recommend be read in the proper sequence, beginning with Sandstorm and concluding with The Devil Colony). His Jake Ransom series is for younger readers but also appeals to adults (Jake Ransom and the Skul King’s Shadow and Jake Ransom and the Howling Sphinx). His standalone books are also excellent reads. Although this is supposed to be a review of The Devil Colony, James Rollins is an author that every reader should read at least once. I guarantee that once you start reading his books, you won’t stop!
⭐ The usual well written Rollins’ story tying the far distant past to the present time with cutting edge technology, tying everything together to get a very current relatable story. I also enjoy the last section where he tells you what is true, which surprisingly is most of it which makes it a learning experience.
⭐ Those familiar with James Rollins will realize one is required to suspend belief to some extent in order to enjoy a good adventure. Such is true for the Devil Colony. I starts off very exciting and continues through out. I thought some of it was a little clunky… like the remembered love affair between two college professors. That was totally useless. It was already over and all one needed to be is a normal compassionate human being to care about the welfare of a long-time colleague. He didn’t need to invent a love affair. But that aside, it was brief, the rest of the novel was a lot of fun.The novel focuses on the Mormons (LDS), Indians and one of the lost tribes of Israel that makes its way to the North American continent and makes a pack with the local Indians of those ancient times. I am Jewish and I used to date a Mormon girl in high school and an American Indian girl in my 20’s. I would guess they would share my opinion that Rollins makes some silly assumptions about our people’s beginnings but the assumptions aren’t offensive. Just a little silly, and fun.I enjoyed this book and I will read it again and again.
⭐ I love this series. It flows well and is engaging. The author takes real life situations and puts his twist on them while keeping them ‘true’. There is always a section at the back that explains where he got his idea and what parts are true and what parts have his spin on them. Highly recommend!
