User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐This is a “must-have” book if you are an author. This book has helped me.

⭐My book has more effective creative writing now

⭐I only have a couple books from this series. I think this is the one to start with. Well organized and with all the emotions included, it will surely make your fiction better. Could make your letter of resignation sparkle as well.

⭐This another absolute MUST HAVE for any aspiring writer. I cannot articulate the tremendous impact that this has had on my writing. I am not in my Senior year as a Creative Writing / English Major with a focus on Fiction Writing. This is the second book by Ackerman & Puglisi that I have purchased and it is as invaluable as the Conflict Thesaurus. This series is like taking an introduction to behavioral psychology for writers. There is so much fantastic information in these that I won’t even attempt any edits without them. Right now, I typically write the rough drafts for my stories and then identify the story’s elements with these books open around my desk as I work.I find these books to be the most valuable asset in my education as a writer and am slowly building a library of these. At under $20, these books are priced to move, and the information that is contained in them is worth ten times the asking price. I cannot say enough good things about these books. If you are a writer or thinking about writing, you absolutely must purchase these.

⭐Very helpful for “showing” instead of “telling” what characters are doing or experiencing.

⭐I can’t believe I haven’t bought and read this series sooner. This book and the books in this series are invaluable tools for writers everywhere. If you are struggling with character details and emotions, settings, conflicts, and even showing versus telling, this series is perfect for you. I’ve already seen a massive improvement in my writing by following the tips and suggestions laid out in this book. I very highly recommend the emotion thesaurus and the series to all aspiring writers.

⭐I’m a professional journalist undertaking my first (lofty) fiction project. Despite my writing background, dialogue and character development is a skill I’m currently having to develop after years of first person. I’m writing a complicated screenplay with several characters, and as can be expected, I’m constantly running into roadblocks, going back, rewriting rewriting….I purchased two books in this series with a Christmas gift card, I’d been eyeing them for awhile-The Positive and Negative Trait Thesauruses. I was instantly hooked.I went through those two and rewrote every character, giving them more depth. Then, because I was so happy with those two, I ran back to Amazon to see what else they had to offer.I picked this one up next, and it’s such a game changer. I went through and every time I labeled an emotion, I took that word out and used the descriptive body language from the book which also got me coming up with my own. These are brilliant, I highly, highly recommend and will probably be picking up the entire series at some point.

⭐I hate when I’m editing and feel like I’m using the same words over and over. This book helps you come up with new ways to express how your character is feeling with physically traits (external and internal) as well as mental.

⭐I have all the printed books in this series and when I saw a second edition for this one I was elated. This was followed by concern before pressing the buy button as to whether this entry warranted a second purchase. With a little investigation and some hesitation I pressed the button. It says blatantly on the cover it has been expanded to 130 entries, which is almost double the 70 odd entries in the first edition. The first edition stands at 164 numbered pages, this second edition a whopping 292.Now if you’re thinking the additional entries are all that has changed, think again. On a quick perusal I have noted that the entry text from the first edition has been expanded in the second. In addition, and an extremely welcome one, all the entries have three additional sections added. The first two point to other related entries on an ‘escalate’ and ‘de-escalate’ scale. The third, though not extensive, is ‘ASSOCIATED POWER VERBS’, and a welcome addition. To maintain the ‘two page per entry’ format of the first edition the font has also been greatly reduced but only to a scale you would get in ordinary books.Overall this purchase has delivered more than I expected and I am now in anticipation of an update for all the series. For new purchasers I recommend this edition over the first. For owners of the first edition, I don’t think you will be disappointed.

⭐Writing is such a nuanced beast. No two voices are the same which is why it’s so rare to find a writing craft book that is universally useful. But that is exactly what The Emotion Thesaurus is. An exceptional writing craft reference and textbook that defies genres and niches and drives right to the core of what a writer needs: emotional characters their readers can connect to. I’ve loved The Emotion Thesaurus since its first incarnation. But the second edition is bigger and better than ever before. Whether you’re a new writer or seasoned pro, this book serves as a tutor for hooking into a reader’s feelings and sucker punching the heart-wrench of a delicious plot. If you want to learn how to ‘show’ emotions, create depth to your characters and make your readers weep, you need this book.

⭐I love this book, it’s totally changed and bettered the way I write.I’m attempting my first novel, before this book my character’s dialogue and interactions were quite flat because I told the reader how they felt, but there is so much more depth when you SHOW the reader how your character is feeling. This book helps you come up with ideas. What’s happening internally when a character is scared, what is their body language? If you find you’re getting repetitive or you’re unsure about some emotions because you rarely experience them this book is gold dust!Highly recommend this book. I’ve bought another one of the series about psychological trauma, can’t wait to get it. I intend on owning every book in the series.I also advise buying the physical book, I downloaded it initially and it was troublesome to get to the page that I wanted quickly, it’s easier to pick up the book and flick to the right page.

⭐I have come across this writing book on several occasions but had never considered it to be what I was looking for. It was only when I purchased several books by Marcy Kennedy – who recommended this book – that I decided to give it a try. This was one of my better decisions by far. It is undoubtedly the finest writing craft book of its type. More than a thesaurus, it provides an overview of the depiction of emotions (under dozens of heading types), a huge introductory section about the nitty gritty of using emotion in writing, dozens of lengthy paragraph-length fictional examples and tabbed emotional types with links to other emotions. Each emotional type is described in detail, with helpful advice that the emotion may escalate to a different type of emotion. Throughout this excellent book there are helpful ‘boxed tips’ on writing. I cannot recommend it highly enough. The research and knowledge displayed is unmatched anywhere else.

⭐Oh my God!After writing 90,000 words of my first book, I come across this absolute diamond and I am truly hooked. If like me, you were expecting “just another thesaurus”, you will be utterly and very pleasantly surprised.I will re-phrase that- you will be totally blown away! This is not only an amazing thesaurus but a book on the psychology and behaviour of people.Your characters are mere manikins without the ingredients of this book.Thank you for sharing this most vital information.A shear pleasure to read. The words in this book will change the way you write. My characters are finally coming alive. If you want to be a great writer then you need this book.Don’t waste another second. This is one buy you will not regret. It’s my birthday soon and the full set is definitely on my wish list.
