Description
This compilation contains three complete novels and eight major short stories from the canon of one of the twentieth century’s most enduringly popular fiction writers. From London to Hong Kong, from Paris to Pago Pago, in Samoa or Malaya or on a Tahitian tropical isle, the men and women in this collection of masterfully crafted tales inhabit exotic, mysterious worlds—and at their own peril invade the dark territory of the human heart.Somerset Maugham, a noted English novelist, playwright, and author of masterly short stories, spent several months in the Pacific in 1916 and 1917 during an interlude in his service in British intelligence during World War I. Several of his works have been made into movies and plays, including Razor’s Edge, Of Human Bondage, Cakes and Ale, Rain, and The Moon and Sixpence.Skyhorse Publishing, as well as our Arcade, Yucca, and Good Books imprints, are proud to publish a broad range of books for readers interested in fiction—novels, novellas, political and medical thrillers, comedy, satire, historical fiction, romance, erotic and love stories, mystery, classic literature, folklore and mythology, literary classics including Shakespeare, Dumas, Wilde, Cather, and much more. While not every title we publish becomes a New York Times bestseller or a national bestseller, we are committed to books on subjects that are sometimes overlooked and to authors whose work might not otherwise find a home.
User’s Reviews
Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐I like his writing style, but his short stories in this compilation were a little repetitive. They were all based on his stay in the South Pacific (Samoa, Tahiti). Nonetheless, there was interesting description of the local culture and interaction with Westerners during that era. Of the novels included, apparently “The Moon and Sixpence” is well known, but I had never heard of it. I thought it started out slow, but got better as the story developed. The Magician was quite fascinating and enthralling!
⭐Maugham gets 4 stars just because one is loathe to give anJoyve y one five. You never know , you might pick up a book sometime this decade which surpasses Maugham ,, and perish the thought but you’ve used up all your stars .So Maugham is really a 5 star author and but for one’s frugality he would be up there with the master writers – he is any way – but Joyce and Hemingway would always steal a few steps- not a march on him .
⭐Classic author who I agree with.
⭐Somerset Maugham is always a great read. Some stories better than others and a bit too much of exotic locations. You must read it
⭐One doesn’t have to write a review of Maugham. He wrote it himself, just right: “I am not in the first rank of writers, but I do think I’m first in the second rank.”Exactly.
⭐Having visited some places described in the narrative, a very good approach upon the real own experiences with people and places. As ever, the paintings of characters is the best (I think) in the author
⭐Good stories, I am enjoying the book…. Thanks..
⭐These are interesting to read.
⭐This only included a few of his short stories and not his best novels. Expensive for the limited contents.
⭐Very good but omits The razors edge and Of human bondage which are arguably the greatest of Maugham’s novels.
⭐You have the feeling he could have been a better novelist than he allowed himself to be. The characters are well delineated, the dialogue is good, but he always seems to feel the need to spring a surprise. Used habitually, even the twist in the tail becomes a bit predictable. I began with ‘Liza of Lambeth’ which promised to be a social comedy, but in fact turns out to be rather unpleasant. I then went on to the short stories which I found accomplished but a little contrived. At this point I put the book aside to await a rainy day.
⭐Interesting, but not the best of his writings.
⭐Very good service from seller and the quality of the book is very good.
