Description

Murder, mutilation, cannibalism, infanticide, and incest: the darker side of classic fairy tales is the subject of this groundbreaking and intriguing study of Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm’s Nursery and Household Tales. This expanded edition includes a new preface and an appendix featuring translations of six tales with commentary by Maria Tatar. Throughout the book, Tatar draws on the disciplinary tools of psychoanalysis and folklore while also providing historical context to explore the harsher aspects of these stories, presenting new interpretations of tales that engage in a kind of cultural repetition compulsion. No other book so thoroughly challenges us to rethink the happily-ever-after of these classic stories.

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐A book that really dives deep, assesses the stories we all know and love from childhood, and finds the darkest roots from each and every one of them in the threads of the society that concocted them

⭐Interesting study on the brothers’ work. I have always been interested in the down-to-earth harshness of the original tales as opposed to the softened-up anglicized versions of later… similar to Hoffman’s Struwwelpeter of the 19th Century.

⭐Tells is like we never knew it as kids! Learning something new every day — most fairy tales have a root in a very scarcy reality, and this book by Maria Tatar points that out!

⭐Great resource for studying Grimms Fairy Tales!!!

⭐Arrived in perfect condition. I love fairy tales, and this is a very historic edition. I look forward to many years of good reads.

⭐I came across this book in the foreword of an edition of Grimm’s Tale I recently purchased, and thought quotes from the foreword seemed really interesting. This is a decent book with very solid research and viewpoints, but I was not expecting such a flat “academic essay”.

⭐The book is quite interesting but rather academic. I had the feeling I was reading someone’s PhD thesis, albeit an interesting one.

⭐After recently re-reading some of Grimm’s fairytales in original, I was curious to read Tatar’s analysis, as she appears to be a leading expert on the work. While it is interesting, the book also disappoints slightly: by “hard facts” she really means just that – we learn a bit (too much) about the biography of the brothers, the author dispells many myths about the way the tales were collected and edited, and she gives a detailed catalogue of all the types of characters, heroes, villains, beasts, magical items, as well as the different turns of plot appearing in the tales. Few comments are made on deeper psychological symbolism of the tales, when such interpretations are mentioned, it is usually only to ridicule them. In large parts of the book, the author convincingly proves what the tales aren’t, without giving alternatives as to what they are instead. All in all, I found the book to be a well researched scholarly work, but (a bit) less colourful than expected.

⭐Ad said this was lightly used. The pages are so worn they are soft and there is writing all over inside the book. However the book is still holding together and still contains information I’m looking for. As a book collector I’m pretty disappointed with the misleading condition the book was advertised as.

⭐I was dissappointed in how dreary this was put together. Some of the real gorey tales are so grotesque that the author should have spent more time on these points and not so much on talking around the tales. Historically it’s interesting too but be patient it takes a while to come across these gems. I have only got about half way through this book and have not been in the right mood to pick it up again but I am determined to finish it as I want to produce a piece of art work that reflects some of the Grimm’s tales.

⭐Good book about this subject

⭐Bought as a present for my daughter when she was tacking her Masters degree in English Literature and was one of the books she was required to read
