User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐It has a great variety of terms (a lot that I still dont know) so its great for a student in philosophy or if youre just fascinated by it like me. My only problem is that quite a bit of the definitions that I’ve read sound subjective. Not saying they’re not true or that the definitions are arbitrary, Its just there tends to be a bit of emotion in the definitions (ones that ive read) that kind of suggest the authors personal view of the philosophical terms. For example the definition on “sex” about its history in philosophy sounds very emotional and not an objective description of the subject.

⭐A great tool to have for those beginning to delve into philosophical writings. Much of philosophy builds on references to other works and terms having a specific meaning and having such a book to build up understanding of those terms is quite helpful so you can continue reading the present work with increased comprehension. I also find it useful in pursuing threads of philosophic thought and identifying areas of interest.

⭐Exactly want I wanted for my college Philosophy courses. I still love a paperback size dictionary and when the prof. has a “no electronic” ban then boom it comes in really handy. I used it and it has way more than my last philosophy dictionary (a total failure)

⭐Useful source for brief lucid summaries and definitions. The Stanford site is great when you have the time and interest. Sometimes you are simply trying to clarify a sentence.

⭐I bought this for a Logic and Critical Reasoning class I’m taking. I” surprised that many of the terms I needed to reference were not found here. I hope this will become more useful later…

⭐Accessible and helpful

⭐A great quick reference tool.

⭐This book is excellent and thorough!

⭐Shot through with the author’s intrusive biased opinions, like a nagging mosquito, whilst you try to read. No more philosophical than the general dictionary. Not at all thorough or insightful. I agree with one reviewer’s summary that this is a good example of “Oxford scholars sniffing their own farts”. Proof of just how easy it is for the privileged to be heard over and above the wise.

⭐This is an exciting, intellectually stimulating and comprehensive A-Z guide to philosophy.Simon Blackburn’s 3rd edition(2016) of ‘The Oxford Dictionary of Philosophy’ explains complex ideas in an accessible and engaging way.It is highly recommended to philosophy students and also the general reader curious about an often abstruse and difficult subject.

⭐Very handy to have within reach during my PhD research. Explanations, reminders and, occasionally, an insightful metaphor which nails an elusive concept for the non-expert.

⭐Well written with clear and informative definitions. Easy to find stuff quickly and easy to get immersed for hours of procrastinatory information grazing.

⭐Perfect dictionary. Comprehensive.
