Description
Your life through the lens of the world’s greatest thinkers! Do you ever wonder how important money really is in life or what you need to do to achieve happiness? With The Philosopher’s Book of Questions and Answers, you will be one step closer to solving these uncertainties. Inside, you’ll find the basics of philosophy, written in plain English, and thoughts for applying these important theories to your own life. You’ll also be encouraged to dig deep into the philosophical reasoning behind your everyday actions with a series of fascinating prompts, such as: If you had ten times your wealth and ten times your income, what would you do then that you can’t do now? What’s a version of that activity that you could do right now? Is it ten times less meaningful, important, or enjoyable than the activity you would do with more money? From Socrates and Epicurean to Kierkegaard and Nietzsche, The Philosopher’s Book of Questions and Answers will not only help you grasp history’s greatest thoughts, but will also unveil the world in a whole new light.

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐This book is an excellent and personalized introduction to philosophical concepts for the lay reader. You’ll want your own copy of this book in order to literally fill-in-the-blanks, answering philosophical questions about your life and thoughts, and then reading the intro to concepts that relate to the subject to help you see where you stand on philosophical issues. It’s a fantastic read for someone who would like to learn more about philosophy and have a guide to help you understand how you can make sense of your own life. This book is the guide. In this regard, the book fills a niche in philosophy that I’ve not seen from any other book. It’s both self-directed learning (you can skip the topics that really don’t interest you), part self-help (you can better understand yourself), and part general overview of key philosophical issues. It’s obvious D.E. Wittkower wants to make philosophy accessible for all, and he does this beautifully. That said, I’ve been thinking about how to use this book in an intro philosophy course, and, while I think some of the exercises for self-reflection would be good, I would hesitate to use it in its entirety because, though the material gives and excellent overview, it doesn’t delve deeply enough into any one issue with enough rigor for a college-level course. This book also spends a great deal of time on “continental” traditions in philosophy, which it does well, but I would want to integrate more “pragmatist” and “analytic” traditions in a course. If I were teaching intro philosophy to non-traditional and returning students, I might be more likely to use this as a text. That said, you should get a copy for your own use and enjoyment. It might not be a perfect college textbook – but that makes it all the better for most audiences, right?
⭐Little did I know that there was a philosopher lurking within me! Thanks to D. Wittkower’s “The Philosopher’s Book of Questions & Answers- Questions to Open Your Mind”, I’ve gotten to know my philosopher self and many of my peers in ways I’d not before. Several of us have been reading this excellent book and meeting monthly for informal discussions of the thought-provoking questions posed and then addressed within their historical, philosophical contexts– usually 3 brief topics per gathering. Dr. Wittkower has beautifully organized a great collection of life’s universal questions into an easy-to-read and digest format. He writes with clarity, insight and humor, making philosophy accessible and relevant to contemporary daily life, and, dare I say entertaining.. Who’d have thought a book of questions and answers could be a page turner? In this fast- paced, digital world, it’s refreshing to find a book that encourages us to slow down and ponder the essence of life as did those a thousand years ago, those who came and went before I -Phones and Facebook! This book can be enjoyed equally by individuals, couples, discussion groups, book groups, dinner party attendees (!), students, or just as a great tool to have on hand for conversation starters. It would be equally at home at the kitchen table, the nightstand, in a classroom, or as a companion on a long train ride. I will be giving this book as a gift and I highly recommend it. ⭐I’ve just dipped into the book, but I remembered that a good friend told me that she would like some knowledge about the teachings of great philosophers. The format of this book is perfect : thought – provoking questions with explanations of the underpinning philosophical theories. I’ll be sending my friend a copy so we can have some great discussions.
⭐My husband & I got together with friends. Over a couple of glasses of wine (each), we discussed 2 of the questions — 2 hours later, we knew ourselves and each other a lot better and we had a great time! I’m planning to start a monthly small discussion group to continue the experience,Sylvia
⭐book has good points, very informative, entertained me in the evenings, book is about many very practical matters and very well though thinking are explained in basic English.
⭐I’ve got to say it: This 2013 soft-cover book has 160 pages, with no photos or other graphics. The book can be used as an armchair guide, a review, or even an introduction to philosophy. The general format of the book is that questions about life (some uncomfortable) are followed by a philosophy and famous philosopher that can answer it. Then, the reader answers questions about how he/ she would employ the philosophy in his/ her life. The book contains the following 11 chapters: 1. Happiness and the Meaning of Life; 2. God, 3. Morals, 4. Political Justice, 5. Economic Justice, 6. Human Nature, 7. Aspects of the Self, 8. Knowledge and Reality, 9. Science, 10. Aesthetics, and 11. Death. (Note that subject matter of these fields can change as more research is done in a field, especially Science.)This book contains the following sections at the end: A Timeline of Philosophies Studied, The Scientific Revolution, Contemporary Philosophy, and the Index. The book is missing a necessary standard section: the Bibliography which, especially for people new to the topic, needs to include good sources of magazines, books, journals, websites, films and videos. The author is D.E. Wittkower, Ph.D., and the publisher is F&W Media Inc., Avon, MA.Last but not least: Your book may easily be tossed into a bag to read while taking public transport or even provide good bathroom reading material. The book would also be fun to do with loved ones and friends.
⭐D.E. Wittkower has created an approachable introduction to the use of philosophy for answering life’s questions. Clever and fun, this is a self help book for people who like to think and a quick survey of many important philosophers.
⭐This book is probably the best for someone who wants a short introduction into what philosophy is about or as a course material – it would be great for classes for 15 years old. The book is divided into sections with a short text and a space to write notes and observations. This might put off someone who would like a full book, but you won’t regret it, as the author is excellent in making very sharp and original observations in a small amount of text. I will definitely use it for my son, to introduce him into reflection about life, happiness and other important stuff that is so often overlooked at schools.
⭐Wuestions to discuss and think about before reading what the philosophers said about each topic is a great way to run a group discussion.
⭐A great book! I’ve borrowed it multiple times from the local library. I still haven’t received this order yet though.
⭐The book has great content.. but it is overpriced
