Description
The Rohingya are a Muslim group who live in Rakhine state (formerly Arakan state) in western Myanmar (Burma), a majority Buddhist country. According to the United Nations, they are one of the most persecuted minorities in the world. They suffer routine discrimination at the hands of neighboring Buddhist Rakhine groups, but international human rights groups such as Human Rights Watch (HRW) have also accused Myanmar’s authorities of being complicit in a campaign of ethnic cleansing against the Rohingya Muslims. The Rohingya face regular violence, arbitrary arrest and detention, extortion, and other abuses, a situation that has been particularly acute since 2012 in the wake of a serious wave of sectarian violence. Islam is practiced by around 4% of the population of Myanmar, and most Muslims also identify as Rohingya. Yet the authorities refuse to recognize this group as one of the 135 ethnic groups or “national races” making up Myanmar’s population. On this basis, Rohingya individuals are denied citizenship rights in the country of their birth, and face severe limitations on many aspects of an ordinary life, such as marriage or movement around the country. This expose of the attempt to erase the Rohingyas from the face of Myanmar is sure to gain widespread attention.

⭐The Rohingyas: Inside Myanmar’s Hidden Genocide by Azeem Ibrahim, shows, sadly, that more than half a century since the Holocaust, and other genocidal acts since then, the world community will not come to the aid of endangered minorities. The Rohingyas are on their own. The world does not care. This books explains how the Rohingya were transformed into “the other” by the government of Myanmar (Burma). Ibrahim illustrates what Timothy Snyder has written of the Nazis in World War II: the prime way to commit genocide is to strip a people of their national, legal rights. Once that is done, a minority group is at the mercy of the government, and other groups. Without access to the legal apparatus of the state, genocide is nearly inevitable. The sad take away from this book is that minority groups have to have some kind of self-defense (as backup) especially if they find themselves in a situation like the Rohingya. Humanity is not yet evolved enough to treat the so-called stranger with love and care. We don’t risk our well being for others.
⭐The book contains many valuable information. But it was obviously rushed to the publisher because of the current situation and written before the August-Fall 2017 crisis (hence the “Epilogue” after the “Conclusion”). Most the book is therefore half-baked and it certainly is not an academic book, as proven by the bibliography, the phrasing, and the content. I also suspect the author never stepped in Rohingya territories, never met any Rohingyas, or carried out fieldwork anywhere –to be fair he does not claim he did, but then most of his work is based on online newspapers, including many of the book’s most important assertions. The covers asserts it is a genocide, then most of chapter 5 is spent explaining Rohingyas are in pre-genocide situation and that “the situation could escalate” (p. 114). Also on p. 109: “In the case of the Rohingyas, these requirements [for genocide] are beginning to be met.” And later: “It is hugely important that we call a genocide a genocide for practical reasons: not just the act of genocide, but the fear that such an act is imminent triggers requirement for the UN Security Council to take direct actions.” Then it is not a genocide (or “not yet”, as the author asserts), and either the author is not aware that China seats on that council, preventing it from taking “direct actions” (what would that be?) or the book is lost on speculations.
⭐”The Rohingyas” is comprehensive, well-written, and urgently needed. The Rohingyas have been a persecuted minority in Burma for decades, a persecution that has accelerated under the current government of Aung San Suu Kyi. “The Rohingyas” presents research to suggest that the persecution amounts to genocide, an accusation that recent events seem to be confirming. Sadly, the response from the international community has been feeble. This book is a must-read for anyone seeking to understand the historical and contemporary context of this ongoing crisis. One hopes that it will also help bring additional attention to the crisis, and halt the genocide before it’s too late.
⭐Well researched and presented in a simple and succinct language, for any reader to understand the tragic fate of Rohingyas.
⭐Anyone moved by the ongoing plight of the Rohingya people will find in this book a thorough explanation of how this has happened.
⭐Excellent Book and gives a historical perspective to the recent Rohingya Genocide and more….
⭐All are perfect, beautiful and much useful to me.
⭐I wonder if he ever admitted that Bengali (Rohingyas) killed more than 44,000 native Arakanese between 1942-1944 using the weapons left by the British in order to loot their land. I wonder if he knew, almost a hundred of native Arakanese villages were wiped out by the Bengali between 1948 to 1982. I wonder if he even made reference to British census about the areas which prove that there was no Rohingyas in 1939.I wish he knew the word “Rohingya” was invented and first used in August 20th, 1951, The Guardian newspaper. I wish he knew, those Bengalies lied, falsify history to gain an identity and a land in Myanmar. Because of, just being a muslim should not blindly help or promote other muslims. As a scholar, truth should be told, not be twisted. As an elder citizen, promote peace and tranquility between societies.
⭐Short but dense background to the Rohinghyas, Ibrahim provides an account of the place of the Rohingyas within Myanmar’s history as well as their current situation. He considers how their plight might be understood in the context of international law on genocide and also examines the ‘unintended consequences’ of persecution such as the rise of extremist groups – for example the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA). Accessible, somewhat dry account, useful background reading for anyone trying to understand what is happening in Myanmar.
⭐Fantastic work by the author! Exceptionally written work! Using item for academic purposes.
⭐Interesting book, swift dlivery
⭐Rohingyas are by far among the most persecuted communities in the world today. This book by Azeem Ibrahim reveals the racist actions of Myanmar government, its military and Buddhist hardliners to oust the Rohingyas permanently from their land (Rakhine or Arakan) which they have been inhabitating for generations. The author has painstakingly done a lot of research and come out with substantial arguments to support Rohingyas’ claim for citizenship and an honourable recognition, protection, freedom and rights as Myanmarese nationals in their own country, and of course repatriation of Rohingya refugees back to Myanmar from Bangla Desh and several other countries where they had to flee, to save themselves from the terrible violence mounted against them by the powers-that-be in Myanmar. Incidentally ,I wish the author had presented his own analysis of the Kofi Annan Commission’s report, considering that the Commission to look into the Rohingyas issue was appointed in 2016 by the Myanmarese government itself. However, this omission does not affect the overall high quality of the book. Every student of world affairs needs to read this book to acquire a more informed and balanced view on the subject. My review of this book has been published by the Marathi newspaper ‘Loksatta’ on 16 June 2018. — Sukumar Shidore
⭐This book is a passionate plea to end the ongoing discrimination and grave human rights violations against the Rohingya minority in Myanmar. While this aim is laudable, the book does not constitute a serious scholarly work. Indeed, it appears to have been written in a rush, with a confusing structure and without the necessary editing. In many ways, it reads like a draft. In addition, as previous commentators have pointed out, the book could have benefited from additional and more thoroughly researched sources.
