Description

A remote military research station sends out a frantic distress call, ending with a chilling final command: Kill us all! Personnel from the neighboring base rush in to discover everyone already dead-and not just the scientists, but every living thing for fifty square miles is annihilated: every animal, plant, and insect, even bacteria.

The land is entirely sterile-and the blight is spreading.

To halt the inevitable, Commander Gray Pierce and Sigma must unravel a threat that rises out of the distant past, to a time when Antarctica was green and all life on Earth balanced upon the blade of a knife. Following clues from an ancient map rescued from the lost Library of Alexandria, Sigma will discover the truth about an ancient continent, about a new form of death buried under miles of ice.

From millennia-old secrets out of the frozen past to mysteries buried deep in the darkest jungles of today, Sigma will face its greatest challenge to date: stopping the coming extinction of mankind.

But is it already too late?

Known for unveiling unseen worlds, scientific breakthroughs, and historical secrets, Rollins’ knack for breakneck pacing and stunning originality has been hailed by critics and embraced by scores of millions of readers around the world. The Critics RaveThe New York Times says that his “roguish charm comes from his efforts to persuade readers the story is credible [through] real-life sources for his novel’s science, history and geography.” Rollins’ rare blend of action, suspense, and knowledge was also mentioned by the Huffington Post, which stated that “After Crichton passed away in 2008 he clearly passed the baton to James Rollins, who like Crichton, is a renaissance man.”NPR calls his work “adventurous and enormously engrossing…” and the New York Journal of Books had this to say: “If you’re a fan of smart, entertaining adventure fiction, this is your summer beach read writ large….All the science, all the history, and all the locations are masterfully intertwined. Wells, and pulps such as The Shadow, The Spider, and The Avenger, James Rollins decided he wanted to be a writer. He honed his storytelling skills early, spinning elaborate tales that were often at the heart of pranks played on his brothers and sisters. Before he would set heroes and villains on harrowing adventures, Rollins embarked on a career in veterinary medicine, graduating from the University of Missouri and establishing a successful veterinary practice. This hands-on knowledge of medicine and science helps shape the research and scientific speculation that set James Rollins books apart.Explosive Page-Turning AdventuresThe exotic locales of James Rollins novels have emerged as a hybrid between imagination, research, and his extensive travels throughout the United States and Europe, as well as New Zealand, the South Pacific, China, Southeast Asia, Africa, Australia, and South America. ⭐ James Rollins is one of my favorite authors. I’ve read many of his books. The 6th Exthinction is my latest read. I remember the first time I ever read his books. He isnt my usual type of author but like so many authors I’ve found that I end up loving, I got his first book on a whim. It was a rainy Sunday, I needed something to read and went to the local drugstore and bought my first James Rollins novel, The Judas Strain. I was mesmerized right away.I’ve read many of his books since then and they never fail to impress. They follow a formula; they race at a breakneck speed around the world and always at the end it’s seems to be a blend of history, science and usually some kind of mysticism.I don’t mind that the books are set up the same, there are still plenty of twists and turns. My favorite parts are the back of the books where he goes over the fact or fiction of the writing. I’ve looked up and read more about many things he’s brought up in his writings. And I am not a science person AT ALL. It’s like his books are ice cream sundeas and he’s hidden some Brussel sprouts deep in the ice cream. Now to this book. The is a classic James Rolliins book that starts with a historical figure and then boomerangs across time and the globe to California, Washington DC, South America and finally Antarctica. The books steams ahead at its usual breakneck speed however I do feel like you get a good idea of the characters and their motivations. I also learned a little bit of science that I didnt know about.I do have some complaints. I don’t know if Mr. Rollins is at a loss for new ideas but I noticed that not only the structure of the book was the same there were definitely events that happened in other books. I read The Devil Colony right before this book.In both books a main character, the SAME main character gets shot in the arm. Both times it’s brushed off but wow how many times can someone get shot in the arm? Also both books someone in the field has to have their leg chopped off with an axe. Also there is usually a basically mute ( in some cases actually mute) beautiful cold woman who has a soft spot for children but otherwise is an assassin in many of his books. He uses these devices over and over. I could mention more but you get my point.Despite those repetition’s I liked the book. I’d give it 3.5 stars. Can’t wait to read the next one. Just need a few fresh ideas!

⭐ I’m a longtime Rollins fan, having read all the way back from Subterreanean (which I thoroughly enjoyed the nod too in this novel). I love Sigma Force and everything it’s grown out too lately, but for some reason this one didn’t really spark with me. Being familiar with a lot of his pre-Sigma works, I saw him going back to a lot of his roots in biology and veterinarian studies, which heavily influenced books like Ice Hunt and Amazonia. That being said, putting these elements in a Sigma Force-style narrative made it feel–to put it plainly–repackaged. The whole experience felt, to me, at least, like a retelling of Subterranean, only with my beloved Sigma characters (and not even my favorites: where’s Monk??) spliced in. It’s the same, fast-paced, page-turning adventure you’d find in Sigma, but with a lot of the monster madness of his earlier works put together in a mishmash of the familiar and the even-more-familiar that left me with a bland taste in my mouth and no memorable characters or moments to leave with. It’s good, but skippable.

⭐ So far this is the first Sigma Force book that I struggled to finish. Usually, Rollins’ books are page turners and there aren’t enough hours in the day to read them. I am becoming disappointed with the predictable scenarios. Every Rollins’ book so far takes place in a tunnel and/or cavern underground. And every, or most, books have a plucky female character that is annoying or rebellious or irritating or way too confident. In this story, that character is Jenna. I didn’t like her from the start and found it hard to believe that she could hold off an onslaught of mercenaries barehanded or that she would be allowed to accompany Painter and the marines on their dangerous trip to Brazil. She wasn’t even military and yet she was a major player in their plans. The book felt like a rushed creation by Rollins. Several times I found myself having to reread a section just to understand what he was trying to say…and then would find things written in error. Rollins always has several stories going on at once in his books and they usually work. They didn’t this time. Too confusing, too disjointed. I love this Sigma Force series and always have a hard time putting them down. He is a great story teller with a cast of wonderful characters. While this book didn’t wow me the way his previous ones did, I can’t wait to dig into his books that follow this one.

⭐ I was trying very hard to read James Rollins’ THE SIXTH EXTINCTION, but could only make it to Chapter Six before I gave up and threw the book away. What should have been an intelligent, exciting thriller was ruined for me by all the jumping around between different characters and different scenes. I absolutely hate that type of book…you can’t get into it before being ripped from one scene and suddenly thrust into something completely different, again and again. Yuk. I have only found ONE book that I liked with that style of writing, and it was THE STAND by King.

⭐ The novel’s various settings leapt from Darwin’s Beagle expedition in 1832 to present day Mono Lake, CA at a DARPA funded facility, then to Brazil and the Antarctic, with the reader having a difficult time differentiating the good guys from the bad guys. Heavy on the genetic engineering terminology and procedures, ” The Sixth Extinction”, delivers a solid, action-pack tale which reminds us humans to be better curators of our planet. The extremophiles created by Cutter Elwes and Alex Harrington put Jurassic Park engineers to shame, as Elwes played God and was bent on destroying humans.Well written, with Gray, Painter Crowe, Jason Carter, and Joe Kowalski all commandeering various leads throughout this novel. This novel, thankfully, was not as long as ” The Bone Labyrinth”, but the theme was consistent with scientist gone amok. I am anxious to see if the counteragent to Elwes’ viral prions would reverse Gray’s dad Alzheimer’s and if the escaped Megatheriums will be the catalyst to man’s final descent towards extinction giving Cutter Elwes the final laugh.

⭐ Just recently found James Rollins and the Sigma Force novels after getting a sweet deal on this book. Since I am a Clive Cussler fan and love the action adventure genre this fits right into my reading interests. Loved the book, loved the story and have moved on to his other books. It seems that while there is a list in order they dont really have to be read in order. I am finding each story to be a different adventure with some common characters thrown in, at least so far, since I just finished sandstorm. These books can be tedious when it comes to the technical descriptions of whatever area they are in and whatever equipment they are using but then again I actually learn a few things as well. Will be continuing through this series.

⭐ I love novels where instead of one protagonist, there is a group of people working towards a goal. Sigma Force novels is one of the best series of this kind. The characters have a well thought out background and have great chemistry between them. This book, like most of Rollins’ books, was brilliant. There is an extinction level event in progress, and the team is fighting on two fronts to stop that. The new characters that Rollins introduces always bring something new to the mix and the bad guys are crazy and scary. This one is no different. Set in Antarctica and South America, this one was again a page turner.

⭐ I love reading James Rollins because of his unique blend of fiction and real world facts. True that there are many authors like him and countless of books touching upon similar subjects. For me, what distinguishes James Rollins from everyone else is his subtle way of altering reality. He never crosses the line and, as a result, his books are not only entertaining, but also a good way to learn some interesting facts and new discoveries in science, technology, history and anthology. All of his characters are also very relatable and down to earth. I love Doctor Lisa – she has been my favorite since she first appeared. Also, Rollins usually manages to sneak in a cute four-legged hero which is aways a plus.Onto the next book…

⭐ I finished reading The 6th Extinction, volume 10 in the Sigma Force Series by James Rollins. It has one of the most exciting openings of any book I’ve read. This book had me on the edge of my seat throughout its entirety. The entire 443 pages takes place in just over 24 hours. This novel is ushering in the 10th anniversary of the Sigma Team. It packs a wallop of a punch! It is a fitting celebration for a series of books written by a Master writer. To me, James Rollins has no peers. No one writes this stuff better than him! In this story, there is a toxic substance annihilating everything in it’s path – animal, plant, insect, bacteria. Nothing escapes. And, it’s spreading – fast. Sigma has to retreat to the past in order the save Mankind in the Future. We have everything from a canine in peril to the possible extinction of man, with a journey at break-neck speed, across several continents to find the answers, thrown in-between. We have our beloved team members racing against time to solve a deadly crisis alongside a few, new storyline recruits assisting. I was exhausted when I finished reading this book. I had to get a towel to wipe the sweat off my face. The one thing I truly enjoy about Jim’s writing is that he makes learning fun. He has the best recipe for a novel. A little bit if history, a dash of science and a two cups full of action and adventure. Whenever I finish reading one of his books I always grab an encyclopedia to read more about the history from that particular book. I find out that the history lesson he has written for us is only the tip of the iceberg. We have the opportunity of finding out how deep it goes. There is something new to learn in every one of his books. Do yourself a favor. Purchase one of Jim’s books online, download an e-book or check out a book from your local library. Then, find yourself a quiet corner, curl up with a hot cup of coffee or a cold drink and get ready to be mesmerized. I guarantee you will walk away from that book having learned something new about some point in history that you didn’t know before. I wish I could have had teachers like him when I went to school.

⭐ More of a shoot ’em up and less of a sci-fi than I expected, since I haven’t read this author before. It is clearly written with movie potential and several “save the girl” sequences dominate the action. The female leads are plucky, but always end up needing to be rescued somehow by potential love interests with guns. All the heroes, of course, shoot guns with no compunctions about killing and with astounding accuracy – after all, they’re saving the world. If you want to read a fast-paced action novel, then this will fill the bill. If you are a science fiction buff, you might find the flaws in logic regarding the potential microbial threat a bit off-putting. The action starts with a genetically-engineered microbe escaping from the laboratory and threatening life on earth. The author interweaves some of the literature on Nazi development of Antarctic caverns, which initially interested me. He focuses on the continent’s bizarre lifeforms, as long as they are gun-worthy and fails to address microbial dangers in this cavern purported to contain super-mutating, predatory species, even though mother nature has a long-standing reputation for whipping up life-threatening microbial life. Apparently, the author clearly thinks teeth and squirmy underwater threats are more screen-worthy villians. And, he is probably right.I gave this three stars because I was looking for more science fiction and less gun play. Also, I was disappointed the the logic flaw wherein the reader is expected to be fearful of man made microbes, but not of microbes in a super-mutating environment. However, if gun-toting heroes is what you are interested in, then you will probably like this action novel. If you saw the 2005 “King Kong” and liked the squirmy, teethy man-eating denizens depicted in that film, and the repeated rescue of a damsel in distress, then you won’t be disappointed in this story. It has the requisite narcissitic villian, multiple life-threatening monsters, fuzzy warm and sympathetic animal hero who loves a damsel, (in this case a dog) and a time-sensitive, save-the-world mission for the “good” guys. If you are looking for an intellectually challenging science fiction with a complex moral challenge, then this is not for you.
