Description

Dr. Gary Chapman has helped millions prepare for marriage. Now he helps you prepare for kids.Things I Wish I’d Known Before We Became Parents has one goal: prepare you to raise young children. Dr. Gary Chapman—longtime relationship expert and author of the #1 New York Times bestseller The 5 Love Languages—teams up with Dr. Shannon Warden—professor of counseling, wife, and mother of three—to give young parents a book that is practical, informed, and enjoyable. Together they share what they wished they had known before having kids. For example: children affect your time, your money, and your marriage—and that’s just the beginning. With warmth and humor they offer practical advice on everything from potty training to scheduling, apologizing to your child, and keeping your marriage strong… all the while celebrating the great joy that children bring. From the Preface: “Our desire is to share our own experiences, as well as what we have learned through the years, as we have counseled hundreds of parents. We encourage you to read this book before the baby comes, and then refer to its chapters again as you experience the joys and challenges of rearing children.” — Dr. Gary Chapman

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐I bought this book after I saw it listed on multiple reading lists for pregnancy, what to expect, etc. This book is full of pretty basic “common sense” information about having children. It might be helpful for people who have never been around kids or haven’t really considered them yet in their relationship. The topics were nothing new and I found the book a little too preachy at times. If you didn’t already know that kids are expensive and will change your schedule…I guess this book will offer some clues. Overall I was disappointed and could only read a few sections before I had to put it down.

⭐Overall I do recommend this book but with a note of caution to those who have read any of the 5 love languages books. Nevertheless, the book still contained good advice for new parents. It’s appropriate to new moms and dads as well as those with toddlers (like me). But some parts will speak more to earlier parents while others to the later.

⭐I read this once through on my own and picked up a lot of great wisdom. Now my spouse are reading it together so we can answer the questions together. I’m excited for thought provoking discussions on raising our future child.

⭐Great product, fast shipping.

⭐After reading some of this author’s other books, I was looking forward to some insights into parenting from a counselling perspective and research/evidence to back it up. Unfortunately, it was mostly just his opinions and throwing an occasional bone to his “co-author” (she literally gets about 2-3 sentences per chapter). While the topics were helpful for me to consider (I.e. needing to think about teaching social skills, emotional development, costs associated with childcare), I found myself asking if what he was saying to do as a parent was truly necessary or just his perspective of what “good parents” do. After about the 7th plug to buy his other books and his boogey man fear mongering of public schooling and “secular culture”, I was done with the book.

⭐As I’m ready to embark on parenthood, I truly appreciated the insights offered by these parents. The learning has given me more confidence and preparation in managing expectations, handling difficult situations and being the ideal parent.

⭐This book opens up more that just the kids question. It’s the working in a team with your spouse that will build a strong house! It’s not easy, but you you need to work at clear matters before u enter parenthood. This book does that.

⭐This is a great read for first-time parents! Even if you think you already know how you’re going to raise your child, the authors give great advice to keep in mind as your child ages.

⭐Great book, it gives examples of what’s life with kids and it’s based on the scriptures. Chapman is a great and wise man who gives great tips and advice in love matters and I believe becoming a parent it’s agreat act of love.

⭐My absolute favorite author! Easy to read and so practical!

⭐Just Okay
