Description

Rose Gardner should be celebrating the arrest of her fiercest enemy, J.R. Simmons. But problems are like weeds—pluck one and five more spring up. Rose’s boyfriend is on the verge of leaving her for good, her best friend, Neely Kate, is grappling with marriage problems, and her sister has a devastating secret. To make matters worse, she discovers J.R. Simmons has not been neutralized. His network of allies and henchman extends further than she suspected, and J.R.’s so intent on revenge, his lackeys might just destroy Fenton County to get it for him.

But the girl who once spent her days alone and afraid is now a strong, independent woman with a network of her own, including Neely Kate, Skeeter Malcolm—the reigning king of the Fenton County underworld—and other loyal friends on both sides of the law. Racing against time, they must dig up J.R.’s empire by the roots, unmasking his allies and unearthing his secrets, both the behind-the-scenes manipulation he’s been orchestrating in Fenton County for decades and the dark stains of his personal life.

If Rose succeeds, she tells herself the quiet and peaceful life she once dreamed of will be at the end of the tunnel. But her quest to destroy J.R. will require her to explore the person she has become, what she wants, and what that means for her future.

Reviews from Amazon users, collected at the time the book is getting published on UniedVRG. It can be related to shiping or paper quality instead of the book content:

⭐ “It all started when I saw myself dead.” That’s how the Rose Gardner Mysteries began in Twenty-Eight and a Half Wishes. How could it possibly end well for Rose Gardner and her cohorts? It’s not easy to write a review for such a phenomenal story without revealing spoilers, but I’m going to do my best. I was given the task of summing up this final installment with one word: explosive.Denise Grover Swank is at the top of her game in Thirty-Six and a Half Motives. She holds nothing back, makes some bold decisions, and by the end the fallout is unavoidable. You get the finish every character deserves in the JR Simmons saga that has ruined so many lives. All the dirty secrets and lies come to a head in one heck of a finale.Plans explode. Relationships explode. There’s even literal explosions. Every character’s true colors shine through. While you don’t get answers to everything, there are answers for:Mason’s relationship with RoseThe identity of Rose’s fatherKate’s real reason for pestering everyone in Fenton CountyWhy Hilary Wilder would follow Joe Simmons to the end of the worldJR Simmons’ endgameThe identity of Anna and what role she plays in the bigger picture…and much more!I normally give some sort of “MVP” of the book, but in this instance everyone who mattered was most valuable. Skeeter Malcolm is swoon worthy. Jed Carlisle is one heck of a fearless protector. Joe Simmons is the guy you always want at your back. Mason is the boyfriend everyone wishes they could have. Neely Kate is the bestest of the best friends a girl could ever hope for. Maeve Deveraux is the mother all of these characters have been missing from their lives. The pacing is fast. I read the entire book in a handful of hours. There’s even a fair share of surprises that I’m not going to reveal here. I’m keeping this spoiler-free after all! Let me just say that I laughed, cried, and was left in shock MANY times throughout this 117K word masterpiece. One of my favorite quotes expresses just how I feel about the Rose Gardner Mysteries and Denise Grover Swank’s writing as a whole: “She’s taught me life is meaningless without people to share it with.” I want to share this book with the world. Where can a story like this end? You’ll just have to read it for yourself.

⭐ I loved this book. I am a huge fan of Denise’s writing. I first began reading her Rose Gardner series. I fell in love. I am a Rose hog. I love everything about Rose. I finish the Rose books within two days. I love the series! There are so many surprises in this book! I laughed, I cried, I cheered Rose and NK on! Do not worry I will not spoil it for you because I want you to read this book. This is book is a turning point in the series and a MUST READ!One of my favorite parts of Denises’ writing is the depth that she brings to each character. None of the main or supporting characters are left unattended. Each has their own background and storyline. I love learning more about each of the characters and watching them grow. The depth and realness of the characters pulls at your heartstrings. Denise’s writing is so relatable. It is like you are reading about your bestfriend! We should all have friends like Rose and NK!

⭐ Never a dull moment in Rose Gardner’s world! This book starts out with action and doesn’t die down one bit. Action, action, action. I read this book in 2 days. I just wanted to take extra lunch breaks at work yesterday to finish. I needed more. I may need to mourn this book for awhile. The very end has thrown me off. I need to process. But the last several chapters had my heart pounding. I need to go take a lap around my house to calm myself down. And catch a breather from my tears! I absolutely love this series, I cannot wait to read the next novella and start on the Investigation series. I can’t wait to see what Rose and Neely Kate will get into next!

⭐ Man oh man! Talk about a total book hangover. I waited so long for this book to come out, I wanted to devour it and savor it at the same time. This is it! The moment we’d all been waiting for and was it worth the wait! I fell in love with The Rose Gardner series from the very first book in the series, Twenty-Eight and Half Wishes. I love each and every character. To see their stories come to an end was sad but Denise Grover Swank wrapped up everything so nicely I was very pleased! I wish the series could go on forever and I know that we will continue to see more of Rose and Neely Kate in DGS’s new series but I still want to hear more from everyone in Fenton County! This book truly has it all! We get to see all of the characters that we’ve grown to love throughout the series. In many books you can tell where the author will take the characters and predict the ending. I could not do that with this book. I really had no idea what was going to happen in the end. The story was so intricate and well written that there could have been many, many different outcomes. Without giving spoilers, there are many issues that get resolved and Rose (and we) finally gets closure. If you have read along with Rose, you simply need to read Thirty-Six and a Half!

⭐ I’ve excitedly dreaded this edition of the Rose Gardner Mystery series. I knew the plot was going to come to its conclusion and once and for all we’d discover the many truths to all the questions that have accumulated along the way. These books are “Do Not Disturb Me” books. I read them in one sitting. Nothing gets done. I barely remember to blink and my eyes get dry and bloodshot. But I can’t stop. Just one more chapter…until it’s finished. There were several huge surprises here that I didn’t see coming, and a couple of threads leading into the new series, I’m so glad these people will continue to be part of my fictional world. They’re more like friends than characters in a book, and I’ll enjoy the adventures of Neely Kate and Rose in the next series too. It’s a new beginning rather than an ending. Turns out I had nothing to dread.

⭐ I’ve been following this series for the last two years (and Denise, I’m so glad you didn’t give it up!) I’ve loved watching Rose grow into herself, and I’m not gonna lie, I’ve always been rooting for Skeeter… He’s probably my favorite character besides Rose and Neely Kate, and I want to know his side of things, his story from his point of view… But that’s another story (or series) I hope will be written. It’s so nice to know what happens… And how all of the loose ends from the series have tied themselves up nicely. I love a series, but I love even more stories that end nicely. More than anything thought I don’t find trouble like Rose, and I’m not a firecracker like NK, I have come to think of both as friends, and would love them to be real friends in my life. Bottom line in this somewhat rambling review, I am glad that this chapter of Rose’s life has some resolution, but I’m thrilled that the story is continuing in new veins. And I can’t wait to see what happens in next in Fenton County… It promises to be AWESOME!

⭐ Anticipation, anxiety, excitement and regret….those were the feelings I had as I opened Thirty-Six and a Half Motives. I knew it was going to be the last book in the series but that it was going to answer all those questions the prior books had raised.Never one to disappoint, Denise Grover Swank came out swinging. We got answers about who was really Rose’s dad, what did Dora discover and disclose in those journals, why was JR so involved in things there in Fenton County, is marriage in the picture for Rose, will Neely Kate stay married? SO MANY QUESTIONS — ALL THE ANSWERS.I still have some mixed feelings about this book but am waiting to re-read it after a few days to let things settle in.

⭐ MY GOD!!! This book is insane!!! Like have everyone lost their marbles????My heart breaks for Mason and Rose, they are in such a tough spot right now with their relationship and I truly truly hope that they will work things out. But not until Rose is able to cut off all ties with the criminal world and hangs up her role as Lady in Black . . . For good.Digging into the past of the Simmons household proves to be a tough one, but there’s a reason for everything but when J.R. Simmons is involved, nothing ever has a reason and his power in Fenton County puts everyone on high alert. For Neely Kate, all the hardship she’s gone through I can’t say I blame her for her decisions, sometimes you have to let go of all the negative things in order to have an positive outlook. I think she gain back pieces of herself as well discover new things about herself as well embrace all that she knows.Hilary and Kate are two people, you don’t want to mess around with. While we knew a lot about Hilary, we almost know nothing about Kate. Kate has her own secret past, one that only her father had made interference in and honestly I didn’t think J.R. had really cared about his daughter because he spent so much time trying to keep Joe in order.Okay I know I haven’t been a huge Joe fan lately, but what happens in this book really starts to change my opinion on Joe. WHILE I am not suggesting for a Joe and Rose reunion, I think Joe will need to relies on who he call friends. Trust me he’s going to need it.Skeeter Malcolm; I thought he would stay zipped-tight on what he knows about the Simmons household, but because of Rose’s influence on him that he realizes that it’s better to have allies you call friends rather that have enemies and be alone. He finds the strength to fight, to go up against the biggest power of all because in the end he has more to lose than JR Simmons does. Even if JR Simmons EGO is the size of a bear. Also have you or are you a skillet fan? Listen to Skillet new song Invincible because it reminds me so much of Skeeter Malcolm. There were so many twists and turns in Thirty-Six, more than any other books in the Rose Gardner series. I wish I could say all that I want to say but they all contains spoilers . . .While the ending kills me for many characters, I can only hope that Family Jewels the first book in the Rose Gardner Investigation will bring some light to the darkness. This is an PUURRRFECT book; let’s just say that you gotta read it.

⭐ This is the first book review I have ever written. Mostly because I have never been this passionate about a book/book series before I stumbled upon the Rose Gardner Mystery series. (And come to think about it, I have only ever written two reviews in my life, and those I were asked of me in regards to my wedding). So I hope that speaks for itself.I love this series! It is/was incredible, with all the twists and emotional roller coasters, I fell head over heels. If I could (and if Denise Grover-Swank was willing and able), I would personally pay her to keep writing more Rose Gardner Mysteries!(Possible Spoiler- do not read this paragraph if you haven’t read this book yet). As many have mentioned in their reviews, this last installment doesn’t answer every question. My biggest questions have to do with Mason and his motives, Hillary touched on it towards the end, however did not have time to get to it. While Mason seems sincere in his relationship with Rose, I cannot help but think an ulterior motive began their relationship and would have loved to know. (Sorry to all the Joe and Mason supporters- I personally am a Skeeter, or shall we say James, fan! Hint, Hint, DGS ☺). Another big question someone else pointed out was about Joe keeping Rose’s mother’s journals, what exactly is going on there? I was really happy to find out DGS was writing a Novella and am really hoping it will touch upon these loose ends. But no matter what I am a die-hard supporter of this series. Can we get a television/movie deal?!? This series would be amazing as one!Although I am very sad to see the Rose Gardner Mysteries ‘end’, I cannot wait to continue reading about Rose and NK’s adventures. Thank you Denise Grover-Swank for creating such an amazing story!

⭐ ***** “Thirty-Six and a Half Motives” by Denise Grover SwankWow!! Amazing!! Incredible!!The author uses this last book of the series to put an end to the loose pieces and larger parts. Almost every piece of the puzzle has been placed. It is complete. She brigs it all to a close with a punch!!Fast moving and sometimes complicated there is not a stone unturned. Engaging isn’t an adequate word. Ensnaring might be strong enough. It pulls the reader in and in and in again, until we are fully submerged in the novel. It is truly a book the reader can’t/won’t put down. The author has written a one of a kind gem.It is a hard concept for lovers of this series to accept that this is the last book, the finale, never another to follow…What now??? Rose isn’t done. She is blooming and changing and growing more everyday; and so are many of the characters. These threads need to continue to be seen until there is nothing left but a true masterpiece. So, it turns out we can grieve and mourn a series that so many waited (im)patiently for the next book to be released over the last five years… We can do so knowing Rose’s story will continue. It will do so via a spin off: “Rose Gardner Investigators.” Oh and there will be one last novella this summer for the Rose Gardner Mystery series. This is a monumental book. An end we all knew was coming…but just couldn’t believe. Denise Grover Swank wrote a finale like no other. A true and powerful ending!! An amazing, incredible, and wow finale.*** Note: Do not read this one if you haven’t read others. Lots of spoilers in the final novel. But well worth the wait.
