Description

Since his first novel was published in 1974, Stephen King has stretched the boundaries of the storyteller as a writer who constantly redefines his readers’ experience by working in various genres and formats . Whether in an epic horror novel, like THE STAND, a serial-novel like THE GREEN MILE, or a novella like SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, King is able to deliver a reading experience like no one else can. As quickly as a spider spins its web, King reminds us why he’s the master of the novella – a format which, up until now that is, one might have thought is fast disappearing.

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐With King, the mighty, word-savvy, page-turning King – You get what you paid for.The story follows a 35 year old lit professor who, out of spite, buys a kindle. The kindle arrives and looks like all the others expect for one thing. It’s pink. And it apparently has a direct line to different, literary dimensions. What if Hemingway wrote just one more book? Or what if Shakespeare wrote five more plays before his death? Even though this title is a novella, it works at an even pace, getting you comfortable with the story as well as the new techno gizmo that is the Kindle. I could just imagine King tinkering with it, jumping from his seat and bolting to his writing den to pound out the story as he examines every button on the kindle. But that’s the draw of King. He gets us where we live. He always starts fresh with what is new, foreign or, quite possibly, alien to us.I mean, think of it. A plastic box which holds thousands of books that you can just have zapped to you every time you press a button? Imagine what it was like in that pitch room. Look out Radio and TV, there’s a new revolution in town. But such is the Pop of King. He tackles the things of today, haunts them tomorrow then serves them to us thick with the aroma of mystery, intrigue and horror. Twice already he’s terrified me with vintage cars: From a Buick 8, Christine. He’s turned the common cold into a plague: The Stand. He’s turned our phones against us: Cell. Our dogs are against us: Cujo. Any way you slice it; nothing is safe from King. With UR (read in two sittings) I’m glad King has stuck to his guns when it comes to having story be the key driving point and wait for plot later. There were a couple of times where I thought I could predict the outcome, but he cornered me with my suggestions and addressed what we were all thinking in the story. Not only does the Kindle device have lost literary titles but it also has alternative newspaper articles…I’m going to leave it at that. One reviewer called it brain candy and I’m willing to agree with them. It was so intriguing I didn’t want it to end. All I can say is that I can see a second part to this fantastic tale. But what would the title be? Kindle 2: UR IT? Or maybe Pinky’s Revenge? In any case, this is one title I’m willing to re-read over and over again.By the way, there were, in King’s own way, hints of other books. I’m noticing a lot of connections and crossovers in his works. Most notably, the Dark Tower Series has some relevance to the plot. I guess there’s never a stand alone work when you’re as prolific as the master storyteller himself. Thanks, King. I’ve had the Kindle for less than two days and already you have me edging away from it in some cases and watching it from a distance the next. Will I discover another, terrifying literary underworld? One can only hope.

⭐Did Amazon pay Stephen King to write UR or did it try to bribe him not to write it? That’s the question, and will Kindle be coming out in any other colors? I’m sure the sales would go through the roof if a Kindle came out in ‘Breast Cancer Pink’.A wonderful read from King as usual. His characters are so real and so easily frightened. I’m not sure how many people wouldn’t have gone straight to the stock reports, or the winning Lotto numbers instead of taking such a literary road such as Wesley Smith did in the King’s new novel UR. Sure, retyping lost Hemingway novels and passing them off as your own might create a guilty conscious, but I doubt betting on the ponies would. But then again, where would the suspense of a Stephen King novel come in?I thoroughly enjoyed the new ‘Kindle-inspired’ novelette by Stephen King. I loved the characters and the story line really had me wondering what would happen next. The ending was priceless. UR proves that King really could be interesting even if he were just writing a phone book.

⭐A pink Kindle plays a major role in a Stephen King story. Wesley is a English professor at a college in Kentucky not known for it’s sports teams. He broke up with his girl and is full of regret and puzzlement. A Kindle can provide a world of enjoyment and knowledge. Wesley struggles using it and following actions he would not do otherwise. There is even mention of a tower. I always enjoy a good King read.

⭐This book was an idea from the best of the best writers of our Generation. I share his age +/- a year. My grandson shares his birthday with him. Great story line, excellent characters. Thank you Mr. King for this book.

⭐Wesley has ordered the Kindle in a spite that “occurred to him was a kind of methadone for lovers.”. But the Kindle he receives is pink. The charges for his Kindle do not show up on his card. And whenhe opens the Menu, he finds a section on books and periodicals from Ur. And he isn’t charged for those either. He finds a catalogue of unpublished works by all the great writers. But , ” one of the universal truths of life was that, sooner or later, someone always paid.”This is just an entrancing single. The jackpot is King’s construction of titles and even excerpts from the unpublished great writers. The whole story is just spot on, and we even get some nice character development. I really, really liked this one.

⭐Quick and easy read, characters that grabbed you and kept you intrigued! Just what I needed as I sat in the jury selection room waiting to be called!!

⭐I’m a huge fan of Stephen King’s books and short stories, so this was a no-brainer buy. This novel is one of his best, in my opinion, and quantity doesn’t always prove quality. This was great quality and a definite reread on my list!

⭐Stephen King is a phenomenal writer. He is my favorite author. He’s written my favorite books. UR is no exception to this rule. This short story/novella is superbly written and I continue to be amazed by his work. I have no idea how he constantly comes up with such intriguing, fascinating, outrageous, but yet believable subject matter. Yes, I am well aware the the supernatural content is NOT real… but I swear the way he tells the story, it’s like he’s recounting something that has happened to him personally. I absolutely cannot get enough of his books. So just to summarize…. this story is FANTASTIC!

⭐A short story in classic King mode. It held me from the first word to the last, as does all of King’s writing. I highly recommend it to King fans & readers who do not know him – yet!

⭐Everyone asks “what if…” at some time or other, and one man receives a Kindle that gives him the answers, but sometimes the only thing worse than a question is the answer. Not a long book, & not a major Stephen King thrill-fest, but certainly worth a read. Some have said that it’s essentially a very long Kindle advert that you pay for the privilege of reading, and maybe it is, but one I’m glad I took a chance on, and if it were made into a short film I would willingly watch. Yes, it plugs the Kindle many times, but until mine’s untimely death a week ago at the paws of 2 Bengal cats, I had a Kindle keyboard and was so happy I should’ve been on commission from Amazon as a number of people were persuaded to buy by my enthusiasm.

⭐I have been an avid reader of Stephen King since I was a teen. I love his alternate way of thinking and his take on the kindle is mindblowing. I am always amazed how he is always thinking outside the box which has made him one of the must read authors for over forty years.

⭐Pretty typical fare for a Stephen King short story. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a HUGE SK fan – and this holds it’s own – I guess I’m just waiting for something spectacular from the master.Worth reading as a first ebook on your Kindle because it’s ABOUT a very special Kindle…(We now have 3 of those in the family and we love ’em!).Overall – I’ll hold onto the fifth star for when SK re-Kindles his mojo!(BTW – if you like SK you probably also like James Herbert… But have you tried Dean Koontz? Try “Fear Nothing”, the first “Odd Thomas” book, his take on “Frankenstein” or – for the longer read – “False Memory”. You’re welcome!)- Doombar.

⭐Amazon Kindle might have paid for this one and we may argue this is not the King’s best story…but King is still doing his magic. He takes an everyday mundane object (a Kindle) and connects it to the surreal. Afterwards he explores how an average person like most of us would respond to the supernatural events. And the question of free will, fate, time paradox and all universes intertwined comes in the end, but remains unanswered.I gave it 4 stars because to me it felt like a draft for a bigger and deeper story.
