Voyage of the Defiance was a Finalist in the UK Wishing Shelf Book Award presented by students throughout the UK. From the Inside Flap “Argh!” Makayla growled before following the two back into the house. She hurried up the steps and pulled open the screen door. Pushing the front door open further, she stepped inside and slammed it behind her. “I don’t like dogs!” She yelled before a startled gasp escaped her when she found herself staring eye to eye with Breaker. Henry continued to ignore her as he walked through the small dining room area toward the kitchen. Makayla kept her eyes glued to the dog. She grunted when it suddenly jumped up, pressing its paws against her chest. The weight of the dog’s body pushed her back against the front door. She cautiously moved her hands up until they sank into the soft fur.”Good boy,” she whispered, staring into the bright eyes. “Good boy. Don’t eat me. I really don’t taste that good. In fact, I need a shower. Yeah, I need a shower and you don’t want to eat anything that needs a shower, do you? Oh wait,” she muttered with a frown. “Dogs eat out of the trash can, don’t they? Guess you wouldn’t care if I had a shower or not, huh?”Makayla’s lips snapped shut when Breaker leaned forward and ran his tongue across her chin. A wave of surprise and distaste swept through her and she scowled at him. She also remembered that dogs had a tendency to put their noses up other dogs’ butts. She pushed against him and breathed a sigh of relief when he dropped back downon all four paws. Using the sleeve of her jersey, she wiped her mouth and chin. She rolled her eyes at Breaker when he tilted his head and gave her a look that said ‘Why’d you do that?'”I sure hope you weren’t licking or eating anything nasty,” she mumbled.

⭐ I have read everything the author writes and this is a very different book for SE Smith. It was clear in the abstract that this was different from what the author usually pens and it was. I don’t usually care for YA books but this book was about character development for people trying to find their way in life. Very few people maturate at the level and speed these young adults do. Even the minor characters experience growth. I read the first half when I first bought the book and it quickly captured my interest. It was so good I did something I have never done – I put it aside for almost a month because I didn’t want it to be over. I am thrilled to discover there will be another book. The true reason the book is fabulous is because SE Smith is a master of the written word. What a wordsmith! I highly recommend this book.
⭐ Just finished this book. Fast read. Good plot, great main characters, keeps ones interest. I have at least 2 grandkids I am recommending this book to. I love reading and sometimes I wish I wasn’t going on 80. I know I would have loved this book intensely when I was young. Now : I enjoyed the book but the excitement is tempered. Well, on to the sequel. DRAGONBOGLE
⭐ Hooboy! This book deserves 10 stars. I am going to be absolutely honest here. For the first half of the book I was thinking this was a nice YA book about a 16 then turned 17 year old girl who has a lot of problems at home, is sent to live with her grandfather in a different city, dealing with heart ache, insecurity, new relationships, the whole gambit of emotions that go with it. Very good story, but not what I typically read. Then, halfway through the book things start to happen and WOW, just WOW! I could not put the book down!!!!! Absolutely freaking fabulous book!!!!! I do not want to say what happens as I do not want to spoil it for anyone. I now realize the author took the time in the first half of the to let us get to know the characters so we would be invested in them and understand why they took the actions that they did. It was so worth it and crucial to the storyline. I think this is one of the best books I have read in a very long time. Thank you SE Smith, for giving us this treasure.
⭐ When I first started reading this book I wasn’t sure about it, it’s a book about young people, teenagers, something I normally wouldn’t read. It did not take me long to realize that this book is about so much more. It’s about people, their struggles, their attempts to find meaning in lives that seemed too difficult to continue at times. This is a beautifully written book of the journey of a teenage girl who’s feeling of hopelessness comes through and who ultimately decide to take her grandfather’s boat and return to where her mother is and where her friends are. She ends up with a stowaway, accidentally so, and on this dangerous journey the two of them learn so much about their strength, that they have value, that they can realize their dreams, and how to survive the world they live in. This is a wonderful book and I highly recommend it.
⭐ I just finished the story and I’ve got a big grin on my face. Oh how I love A ship adventure with the big ocean and all the lessons we learn from it. Before I started reading this book I was worried there wouldn’t be any romance but there was some and that was enough. Great adventure on the sea.
⭐ I love this author’s books and this is a new genre for her but I had pre-ordered it taking a chance she’d tell a good story. This was a GREAT story! I love to read and often find YA stories some of my best reads. This made me anxious, angry, cheer, cry and laugh…..it made feel for these characters. This could be a family movie. I would recommend this to the high school age range to the elders in the family..both the male and female readers. Definitely pre-ordering book 2.
⭐ I don’t know what I was expecting but it wasn’t this book. I just know that Ms. Smith is an excellent writer. I guess I was expecting more sci fi but this book is everything I wish I had read when I was in high school. I would recommend this book to everyone and most especially to high school students. I bet they got an “A”, at least I hope they did.
⭐ As a mother of young children, this story reminded me what it was like as 17 year old reaching adulthood. The characters overcome challenges and learn to believe in themselves when they go on an amazing adventure. Really enjoyed this story.
⭐ Could not put it down. I didn’t know it was a “young adult”, it totally gripped me with its raw honesty and intensity. I think it should be read by all parents. I am 62 and it spoke to my life of struggle and survival against the odds. Choice to sink or swim. Follow your path. 15 stars. Only one other book gave me that feeling.
⭐ Man she made me cry. Its a great heart felt story that brought back feelings from my teens.
