Description

No serious philosopher or student of philosophy can afford to neglect Wittgenstein’s work. Professor Fogelin provides an authoritative critical evaluation of both the Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus and Philosophical Investigations, enabling the reader to come to grips with these difficult yet key works.Fogelin explains Wittgenstein’s attempt in the Tractatus to combine a picture theory of propositional structure, and also explores Wittgenstein’s own criticisms of the Tractarian synthesis. He gives particular attention to topics in the philosophy of language, logic, psychology and the foundations of mathematics, examining Wittgenstein’s work on these fields and arguing that Wittgenstein’s criticisms in these areas form the basis for a radically new standpoint in philosophy.

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐This book is a careful survey of the philosophy of Wittgenstein. The author holds distinct views from those he discerns from Wittgenstein’s work, but he is balanced and fair in his presentation. In fact, one comes to feel that he consistently gives Wittgenstein the benefit of a doubt, but he does point out clearly where he feels Wittgenstein has erred (relative to Prof. Fogelin’s point of view, anyway). I see that my understanding and perspective definitely improved a little as a result of reading this book, which is clearly designed to help beginning students of Wittgenstein’s work such as myself. Much of the latter part of the book is taken up by interesting discussions concerning skepticism, mathematics and other issues. Curiously, despite Wittgenstein’s sharp drawing of lines and setting boundaries in his work, Prof. Fogelin sees Wittgenstein as a skeptic in a rather ancient mold. It is an interesting and insightful book, very easy to read, and one I highly recommend for people beginning a study of Wittgenstein’s philosophy.

⭐John Searle once said that this is the best book on Wittgenstein. I partially agree. I find this book the best introduction to the Tractatus I’ve ever read, lucid, insightful and clear, and also a good introduction to the late philosophy of Wittgenstein. It is not as scholarly competent as Anthony Kenny’s book, which I still find the best introduction to the whole philosophy of Wittgenstein, but it has its own merits, like the independent criticism against the private language argument at the end of the book.
