And chances are you’ll want to seek out other Reacher adventures the moment you finish.” —Entertainment Weekly (A-)”Jack Reacher is much more like the heir to the Op and Marlowe than Spenser ever was.” —Esquire”As usual, Child’s writing is superb. I sat down to write 61 Hours with six things on my mind. First was the title…it just popped into my head and stayed there (and I knew I wanted the 61 to be written in figures, not words, so if you’re the kind of reader who arranges your shelves alphabetically–I apologize!) Second, I knew it would once again feature Jack Reacher…over the last 13 books he’s built up such enthusiasm and loyalty among readers I knew I’d be crazy not to keep on reporting his adventures. Thirdly, I knew I wanted very, very cold weather. My fifth book, Echo Burning, was set in the west of Texas in a heat wave, and the extreme temperature was seen as a real character in the story, so I wanted to try the same thing again, but this time at the opposite end of the thermometer. I was a little nervous at first, because one of my early writer heroes was Alistair MacLean, who wrote cold weather so well. But most of his cold stories were set up on the polar ice cap, or above the Arctic Circle, and I knew Reacher would have no reason to go there. In the end I chose South Dakota in the depths of winter as a location, and I’ll know I’ve succeeded if you shiver over every page. Fourth, fifth, and sixth, I had three names to work with–winners of your-name-as-a-character charity auction lots. A gentleman named Mark Salter helped out with autism research and asked for his mother’s name to be in the book–Mrs. Janet Salter; and then for two separate literacy projects, a man named Andrew Peterson won an auction, and the man who won the other wanted his wife’s name included–Susan Turner. All three winners made very generous donations to the various charities, so I decided it was only fair to make all three into important, central characters. The only problem was…Mr. Turner asked that the character named after his wife have a romantic entanglement with Reacher. From Publishers Weekly After a brief stop in New York City (Gone Tomorrow), Jack Reacher is back in his element—Smalltown, U.S.A.—in bestseller Child’s fine 14th thriller to feature the roving ex-military cop. When a tour bus on which he bummed a ride skids off the road and crashes, Reacher finds himself in Bolton, S.Dak., a tiny burg with big problems. A highly sophisticated methamphetamine lab run by a vicious Mexican drug cartel has begun operating outside town at an abandoned military facility. After figuring out the snow-bound, marooned Reacher’s smart, great with weapons, and capable of tapping military intelligence, the helpless local cops enlist his assistance, and, as always, he displays plenty of derring-do, mental acuity, and good old-fashioned decency. While the action is slower than usual, series fans will appreciate some new insights that Child provides into his hero’s psyche and background as well as a cliffhanger ending. Author tour. ⭐ I’m a huge fan of Child’s Reacher series, and I’ve read 16 so far… of which 61 Hours was easily the most disappointing. First, I knew instantly (on page 97) who the assassin was, and that’s the first time that’s ever happened to me with Child’s work. Second, the author went way over the top with his expressed desire to put Reacher in a cold-weather environment, which manifests itself in repetitive descriptions of how cold it is. Third, the undercurrent of excitement common to the Reacher books is barely detectable here… the tension levels are relatively low and the pace is leisurely to the point of somnolence. And finally, while Child’s books usually deliver a rich array of supporting characters, the only one in 61 Hours who feels both realistic and interesting is present in the story only as a voice on a phone.I’m glad I didn’t read 61 Hours as my first exposure to Jack Reacher. There wouldn’t have been a second.

⭐ “61 Hours” is the second of Lee Childs’ “Jack Reacher” novels that I’ve now read. (The first was “One Shot,” the basis for the movie “JacK Reacher.”) This is a fantastic book – another taut, tense, and extremely well-written thriller in the series about the former military cop who travels the United States and finds himself helping those who are in trouble. In “61 Hours,” Jack Reacher finds himself stranded in a small South Dakota town in the middle of a severe winter storm. One of the town’s residents, an elderly woman, had recently witnessed a murder and is ready to testify against the killer. Now her life is in danger from a Mexican drug kingpin who hired the killer. After checking Reacher out, the town’s local police chief enlists his help in guarding the witness. Reacher agrees to help. Now he finds himself drawn into a highly dangerous situation involving a nearby prison, an old Cold War military base occupied by a mysterious group of people, and a hired killer who is targeting more than just the witness…I really enjoyed “61 Hours.” Lee Childs did a masterful job of moving his story along at a brisk pace. Within the first few pages, I found “61 Hours” nearly impossible to put down.If the rest of the “Jack Reacher” series is this good, I’ll be reading them all in short order. Most highly recommended.

⭐ I don’t know how or where Mr. Lee Child gets his ideas for his Jack Reacher novels , but I can sure say he is amazing and very knowledgeable on his descriptions and getting what he wants us to know across in layman’s terms. You have everything you can possibly want in 61 Hours. A vertically challenged drug king pin, very small town in South Dakota in winter (below freezing temp) , a 60 man police force, a highly secure prison, a 100 man biker gang working for the drug lord, a mysterious secret military complex consisting of one large concrete building with a single massive steel door and with a two mile runway and no one seems to know anything about, murder, a blizzard, with Reacher in the middle of everything. I got 80% thru the book and had a hard time falling asleep that night wondering what the ending was going to be.. Buy it and get ready for a wild ride.

⭐ I have been a fan of Lee Child’s Jack Reacher action novels for many years. I just completed reading this book 61 Hours and found it to be another suspenseful and action packed tale. The weather played a big part in this story. It is ice cold and snowing in South Dakota when the bus Jack was riding in went off the road and crashed near Bolton, South Dakota. There were mostly elderly people on the bus with the exception of Jack and the driver of the bus.Jack helped some of the injured people off the bus and it was freezing outside at this point. In a short while a police officer from Bolton arrived on the scene. The police department also brought a bus, which was used to transport prisoners to their federal lock up in Bolton. After all the injured and elderly boarded the bus and took them to various hotels and hospitals. Jack and police Officer Andrew Peterson of the Bolton Police Department begin talking and the real meat of the novel begins. The story gets a little more complicated because of the policies which have to be followed by Bolton P.D. when it comes to a prison riot and what the officers are assigned to do in such a case. There is also a serious problem with someone who is going to attempt to kill a witness who is supposed to testify against a connected thug. Jack gets involved with the problems of Bolton P.D. and the wind, snow and icy cold weather all add to the challenges Jack Reacher must meet.I never give away too much information when I review a novel because it spoils it for the reader. If you are a Jack Reacher fan you should check out this book, 61 Hours. I found it to be a somewhat suspenseful book because of the hours count down in the book.Rating: 5 Stars. Joseph J. Truncale (Author: Tactical Principles of the most effective combative systems)

⭐ I’m going to repeat much of what other 3-star reviewers of this title have said: it is obvious who the assassin is, and it’s also obvious that the author has decided Reacher won’t figure it out; the portrayal of the brutality of winter weather in South Dakota is overdone to the point of ridiculousness (I live in South Dakota, I know what I’m talking about); the pace is very slow, and there is little to no tension; some of the plot devices (no spoilers) are ridiculous to the point of stupidity.Nevertheless, I like the fact that in each installment of the Reacher series the author tries new things to keep things fresh. I think the Reacher series is one of the very best series in this genre, and the failure of his efforts in this novel will not deter me from reading the rest of the series.

⭐ What can I say? It’s a Jack Reacher book, which says 95 percent of what anybody can say. I’ll add, though, that author Child comes up with an effective hook for this book, a trick that he often pulls off with this series. (An impressive trick, in my opinion, since the Reacher books are unapologetically formulaic, so it requires a special skill to keep repackaging the product in a way that seems fresh.) –And while I’m here, let me complain a bit about how Amazon’s purchasing system let me down this time: I tried buying “61 Hours” on Kindle and encountered some kind of glitch that seemed to prevent the purchase, so I bought a paperback version. Long story short, I ended up with a Kindle version and a paperback. Grr.

⭐ This book had a kind of interesting topic as our nomad Reacher is hitching a ride on a bus that ends up crashing in a snowy South Dakota town. A few murders occur and Reacher assists the local police in the investigations. He also has to stay in the town until new transportation can be set up. He’s used as a bodyguard for an old lady who’s a witness in a drug trial. There are many suspicious things going on in the town around the new prison, a old air force territory, and inside the police force. Reacher’s trying to help the witness and some of the people in town while figuring out what’s going on. Good story and characters, I enjoyed the story and he plot twists.

⭐ An interesting plot wound around interesting characters. I nailed the villain long before Jack Reacher but that really didn’t diminish the enjoyment reading to the confirmation. For some reason I found the characters in this novel more realistic or I had the ability to more closely identify with them than previous books. I know the marketers say you can read these novels in any order, but I recommend reading them in order as I believe Lee Child’s character developments improve over time. It’s a good read.

⭐ I’ve been on a Lee Child, Jack Reacher binge for quite some time now. One right after the other paying what I consider to be a bit of a premium price for each volume in the series and obviously enjoying them. This one finally broke me free of the habit of reading the series. With the frequent redundant phrases and the countdown (x fifty-five, x hours to go) that was okay the first few times I was forced to read it, downright annoying the next twenty or so times.I’m sure I’ll be missing out on some good reading further on in the series but, frankly, it was time to move on. Maybe I’ll return to the rest sometime in the future but, I will always think: “x fifty-five, x hours to go” each time I look at the next one. That and the $9.99 price. Thanks for the previous volumes Mr. Child.

⭐ I ONCE VIEWED THE REACHER BOOKS (AND THE REACHER CHARACTER) AS JUST A GOOD SUMMER READ. I PREVIOUSLY GAVE A 3 STAR REVIEW, AN OPINION I NOW REGRET AS NOT APPRECIATING HOW GOOD THESE BOOKS ARE. ONCE THE READER GETS OVER THE WAY IN WHICH REACHER GETS INTO THE NOVEL’S SET UP PREDICAMENT (WHICH I NOW APPRECIATE MORE AS WELL), IT IS OFF TO THE RACES. AND A FUN RACE IT ALWAYS TURNS OUT TO BE. REACHER IS A HERO: DOGGED, POLITICALLY INCORRECT, TOUGH, AND WITH A CODE OF CONDUCT THAT SATISFIES IN THIS AGE WE LIVE IN. MAYBE IT IS NOT JUST REACHER WHO IS GETTING OLDER AND THUS MORE WORTHY OF RESPECT AS A HERO IN A NOVEL. PERHAPS THIS READER HAS MORE CAPACITY TO SEE HIS WORTH.
