Description

The godfather of Australian crime fiction.’

Cliff Hardy has his PI licence back – but does he still have what it takes to cut it on the mean streets of Sydney?

Cliff reckons the skills are still there, if a little rusty, and actor Bobby Forrest’s case looks promising. Bobby’s a nice-enough guy, but why is he being stalked by a red-hot brunette? And why did he have to go online to find a date?

When Bobby is murdered, it comes as a shock. Cliff’s only solid lead is a white Commodore, the most ubiquitous car around. When a surprising connection with his own past surfaces, Cliff is forced to put some of his skills to the test. But is he heading in the wrong direction?

Somehow he has to put it all together without losing his licence again, but in true Hardy fashion he’s managing to find his way into trouble, not out of it.

User’s Reviews

Review “Torn Apart is a fine entertainment, and Corris, the ‘Godfather of Australian crime fiction,’ is a splendid storyteller. . . . Corris belongs on the short lists of hard-boiled-crime fans who like Down Under settings.” —Booklist on Torn Apart”Corris continues to demonstrate that his prose is in no way handicapped by the eroding waves of time or by the encroachment of advancing technology on beloved plot contrivances.” — Publishers Weekly”Spare prose, clean structure, and a steady momentum make the pages fly by. Corris provides enough background information to make it easy for new readers to jump in.” — Library Journal –This text refers to an alternate kindle_edition edition.

⭐ COMEBACK by Peter CorrisThis is the second novel by Corris that I have read and it reads just as we’ll and smoothly as did my first, namely THE DUNBAR CASE. This title, also featuring rugged Australian PI Cliff Hardy also happens to be an ex-cop with plenty of friends also has plenty of enemies, noticeably on both sides of the law. In COMEBACK, Hardy is hired to track down and “remove” an apparent stalker from the life of an up and coming young Australian television personality. Less than a week into the job, said client is found dead in his car on his way to a quick round of golf and before we can say “whodunit” our man Cliff is the number one suspect in the eyes of the law. Well of course WE all know he did not do it but one death leads to a funeral which leads to a grieving father which leads to another investigation which leads to another murder which leads to … You get the idea.Anyway COMEBACK is a tightly written explosive detective story featuring our man Cliff, some thugs, some more thugs, some coppers and some more thugs. Characters come and go and come again and we never are sure who they really are, but that can be attributed to the skill and talent of the writer who as we all know by now is world class. This book is around 100 pages longer than DUNBAR CASE and the story line is a little bit more complex. Consequently it is a better read overall. So in summary COMEBACK is another world class writing performance from Peter Coriss. Can’t wait for the next one!Greggorio (LR)

⭐ Having lived in Australia (Sydney) for five years of my life I found this story very well told and knew where he was most of the time.An intriguing story – very readable. I have been to the library and taken out a few more in the series. This was still the best of the three I have now read.

⭐ Cliff Hardy, formerly disgraced, has had his PI licence restored and has decided to set up in business again. One of his first cases is that of Bobby Forrest, a young actor, who believes he is being stalked and threatened by a woman he met recently on a dating website. Cliff investigates and finds there is more in Bobby’s past then he confided. When Bobby is found dead, Cliff starts to investigate in earnest as he feels he has let Bobby down by not protecting him. The action is fast moving and the twists and turns keep you guessing to the end.

⭐ Peter Corris rates with the best. Mike Connely, James Lee Burke and Ken Bruen and he has lots of books. The man is an amazing wiriter and what a great character he has created!

⭐ He always writes well both in style and in plot.

⭐ A great read with some Oz localities to make you feel at home for a change. Well worth investing the time.

⭐ I expected the old roustabout to be a bit tired but Cliff Hardy is as sharp a character as ever, without some of the rough edges of his youth.

⭐ Once again Cliff Hardy gets himself into more trouble by not leaving well enough alone. Easy reading, with some familiar landmarks. Entertaing read.

⭐ I have been an avid read of Peter Corris’ Cliff Hardy novels for many years, I would rate this as one of the most enjoyable.

⭐ Picked this up second-hand. I’ve been reading Sydney-based PI Cliff Hardy for decades. Not all of them, but plenty. I think it’s up to # 40 now. But you don’t have to have read any previously – they do stand alone. And it is good.Sure it’s got all the usual totemic pratfalls – you do have to wonder how Cliff is still alive after all the bashings, beatings, shoulder charges and kidney punches he’s endured! But Corris spins a good yarn, and does it sparely. There’s a terrific reference to the sort of books I’ve read too many of lately (Sue Grafton, Elizabeth George, I’m looking at you)”I packed a bag and caught a train to Wyong from Central Station. I settled down with CJ Sansom’s Heartstone. I’d been working my way through his Tudor series. Good reads, although this one was a bit slow – padded, as a lot of novels are now. I don’t know why.”Throws in a few contemporary references (Aust had its first female PM) and keeps you guessing pretty much to the end. There was one clue plant early on that stuck out like the proverbial.Cliff is always best when he’s getting out ‘n’ about in Sydney, meeting new and old contacts alike in pubs and brothels in Newtown, Surry Hills, Bondi, Paddington, Pyrmont. He does make forays to Burwood and Kogarah & manages to describe them well in just a few sentences.A trusty companion for a two-sitting read.
