Description

Politician Peter January is having trouble staying alive so he hires Cliff Hardy to help him. Hardy dislikes the role of politician’s ‘security consultant’ but he dislikes bombers, hit men and hatemailers even more.

Protecting January leads to protecting his assistant, Trudi Bell, which is a more enjoyable assignment. It also takes Hardy to Washington DC where the threats are real and the rules are different.

To stand close to January is to stand close to danger and corruption, but there are even greater evils and Hardy cannot back away.

⭐ I love Peter Corris in all his writing, fiction and non-fiction, but I especially the love Cliff Hardy series. What was The January Zone like then? Well, Cliff was his usual indecisive deprecating self, resisting a drink, looking for old love but also finding good sex. Cliff was unusually physical in this one (leaping tall buildings in a single bound no less). There were fewer (if any) plot twists or surprises – the narrative is very much WYSIWYG. As always, the bit players were more than usually engaging and well done. The storyline was consistent with Corris’ standard cast lists: a flawed politician (who has his good side); a bloated lecherous (but actually as characters go, quite scene stealing) police officer and sidekick; an appealing female character (plus dog) etc.Written in three books (helpfully based on location and plot development) as well as chapters I enjoyed this one but felt that Corris had trouble closing it; he effectively used an (attributed) borrowed ending to explain the feeling of lack of resolution and it is consistent with Cliff’s persona but The January Zone – for me at least – does not stand out amongst the greatest.Still, since we buy a Cliff Hardy for reassurance and entertainment: this one is still good value.

⭐ Very easily followed story by a good storyteller. Peter Corris always presents really well constructed plots that are easy reading. His characters are believable and mostly likeable. It is nice that the settings are also known to me.

⭐ An older novel of JRs, but don’t bother. The story is ok, but it’s a bit too full of gratuitous violence for my liking. And, he doesn’t respond to fans… Try Cheaters instead.
