Description
The third volume in the #1 nationally bestselling Dark Tower Series, involving the enigmatic Roland (the last gunfighter) and his ongoing quest for the Dark Tower, is “Stephen King at his best” (School Library Journal).Several months have passed since The Drawing of the Three, and in The Waste Lands, Roland’s two new tet-mates have become trained gunslingers. Eddie Dean has given up heroin, and Odetta’s two selves have joined, becoming the stronger and more balanced personality of Susannah Dean. But Roland altered ka by saving the life of Jake Chambers, a boy who—in Roland’s world—has already died. Now Roland and Jake exist in different worlds, but they are joined by the same madness: the paradox of double memories. Roland, Susannah, and Eddie must draw Jake into Mid-World and then follow the Path of the Beam all the way to the Dark Tower. There are new evils…new dangers to threaten Roland’s little band in the devastated city of Lud and the surrounding wastelands, as well as horrific confrontations with Blaine the Mono, the piratical Gasher, and the frightening Tick-Tock Man. The Dark Tower Series continues to show Stephen King as a master of his craft. What lands, what peoples has he visited that are so unreachable to us except in the pages of his incredible books? Now Roland’s strange odyssey continues. The Waste Lands follows The Gunslinger and The Drawing of the Three as the third volume in what may be the most extraordinary and imaginative cycle of tales in the English language.
User’s Reviews
Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐Reading this series again, after King finally concluded it – and though it’s been over a decade since my first reading of the gunslinger’s ka-tet, it’s like my old friends have been waiting for my return. In this slice of the tale, the other characters start coming into their own and King draws his characters a deeper hue, layering meaning and darkening shadows. It’s a tense ride, a fulfilling adventure and page-turner that starts to eat away at your sleeping hours. Be warned, I think these pages are laced with some addictive substance…maybe Eddie’s been at it again. I can’t stop reading this series.
⭐I believe I last read these books almost 20 years ago. It is amazing what a difference time makes on perspective. I still love this series, but there are so many things that are different for me now. I know the protagonist is not always a hero. I know there are many shades of good. And I know that obsession and addiction can cause a person to give up and betray all they love. I see Roland so differently now, but I think it is a more accurate picture of him.
⭐I read the first few books of this series BEFORE Sai King re-edited them.. And I can’t believe I waited so long to read the entire series! I am in love with this! Its easy to see the tie-ins with all of the novels that came before and after.. Mere words cannot express how highly I recommend you read these books now!
⭐I’ve read at least a dozen King books and this ranks up there with the best of them. Obviously, if you haven’t read the previous two Dark Tower books this one won’t make much sense. As with all King books it does hit a bit of a lull in the end of the second act, but man Oh man when the third act kicks in, it doesn’t let go until you come to the cliffhanger ending. Definitely my favorite of TDT novels, and probably my second favorite King books. Read the previous two, if only to read this one. It’s THAT good.
⭐Loved the characters the description of their journey make you feel you part of the story I think it’s a great read for anyone.
⭐Of course 5 stars. King’s imagination is exemplary in this series. Or perhaps it is a window only he can see thru. Oy is a fine addition to the Ka-tet. And Blaine is incredibly malevolently insane. I read the Dark Tower many years ago. Today it is a finer read now that I am older and wiser. Thank you Stephen King from one of your Constant Readers.
⭐Yall know. It’s King.
⭐Dark Tower is without equal. This series by King is his opus magnum. The only caution is the first book in the series; it is slow and needs the following books to understand.
⭐Kindle version is 588 pages.Third book/volume in the Dark Tower Tale.Should be read in series order but an Argument chapter tells the story of books 1 and 2.Much better than volume 1, which is shorter and less interesting. If you gave up on book 1 it is worth continuing with the tale. The characters are strongly developed in this book and the action increases as they follow The Beam towards the Dark Tower.Probably the best book of the series so far.Finishes on a cliff hanger.
⭐I would say this is probably on par with the drawing of the three, some great new characters are introduced along with a lot more insight into mid-world and it’s current inhabitants.I don’t think there is anything in particular that I could pick out as a negative except for perhaps the abrupt ending, if I had had to wait years for the next instalment I can imagine that being slightly annoying, but being able to move onto the next book straight away negated that problem for me. If you enjoyed the last and want to continue along with Roland and the gang then I’d reccommend this one!
⭐I have read this series a few times …. Well maybe series is the wrong phrasing as this is an epic… Stephen king spent decades writing an absolute stonker of an adventure ….. And not only was it well done .it is nearly as interesting to see the writing style mature as it is to follow the intrepid foursome on the trek to the dark tower. Read this ,you will not regret it
⭐The “Gunslinger” series is an epic story with characters that you really, really care about, a great story of a long journey, with plenty of adventure on the way and relationships that develop in a fully believable way. There’s plenty of excitement, excellent use of time/history to keep you wondering exactly when this might be taking place and some effective use of invented language, with just enough humour to occasionally relieve the tension. I can’t read the books in this series fast enough!
⭐Three books in with Stephen King! I can see why the author has received so much critical acclaim over the years.Looking forward to settling down and continuing the journey of Roland and Co through the strange lands created by Mr King’s mind.
