Description
This is the story of Rose Daniels, “the most richly portrayed female King’s ever created” (Detroit Free Press). Escape from her macabre marriage is not as easy as fleeing to a new city, picking a new name, finding a new job, and lucking out with a new man. Not with a husband like Norman…

⭐I’m not sure why this book isn’t one that you hear much about, but I enjoyed it. It’s about Rose, an abused wife who one comes to realize her situation and on impulse one day makes her escape from a murderous husband. Choosing a new place to settle, she finds help from a women’s organization and in a second-hand shop discovers a strange painting that captivates her: a woman in a “rose madder” dress, portrayed in a rural setting that turns out to depict a fantasy world. But we learn that Rose’s escape from her husband is not complete, and she will require help from several sources, one supernatural. The lead character is a woman who takes some time to realize her inner strength, even gaining a new career and a new love. I found Rose and a number of other characters appealing, enough so that I was bothered by the death of several innocents at the hands of Rose’s vicious husband. I remember when King was criticized for his shallow depictions of female characters, and believe this book was one of his efforts to rectify that. This copy of the book is replacing my earlier paperback copy that was falling apart.
⭐Rose Madder is the story of Rose, an abused wife, who makes the final escape from her husband Norman, thanks to the supernatural intervention of a mysterious painting from a pawn shop. I don’t usually like how men write women. Most male authors write women who are stereotypes, satellites of the male protagonist, or the quirky shallow character. Stephen King obviously loves women, but sees them clearly. I recognized the women he writes about. Rose Madder is not one of King’s better known novels. It’s a woman’s novel, written about a woman, and shows how ugly a bad relationship can be. There is a supernatural edge to this book, but the real horror is the violence and mental torment a woman can tolerate, and what it takes to finally escape it.
⭐What really shocked me was King’s view of the police. Rose’s husband, a decorated police sergeant, apparently could get in touch with any police anywhere and they would help him. I was so shocked by how the police seemed to care nothing at all about abused women that I did a little research and found that most studies show forty percent of police are involved with domestic violence, usually against women.
⭐This book somehow managed to capture the emotional element of an abused woman, and it was done as thoughtful as one can with this subject matter. You will be rooting for the character of Rosie throughout, and it definitely had me in suspense. Loved the supernatural element woven throughout and it was a nice change from books with a similar troupe. Stephen King shows us once again why he is a master storyteller.
⭐This was my first Stephen King Book. I definitely enjoy the way he tells a story. With great detail you feel like you are right there. This is a awesome story, it will keep you on the edge of your seat. I could hardly put it down. It’s definitely thought provoking. I will be checking out other books of his. I definitely recommend this book.
⭐I am a huge fan of Stephen King and this book is in my personal top 10 books by him — it’s an underrated gem! I purchased this on a whim and was hooked from first page to last. It was passed around between my coworkers at work who also fell in love with it! It’s now a permanent fixture in our ‘work library’ for all to enjoy and marvel. I encouraged my coworker who was a victim of domestic abuse to read this book. After reading it, she built up the courage to remove herself from an abusive relationship (temporarily, unfortunately). We all were very proud of her and started calling her Rose Madder! The content is definitely not for the faint of heart, but it’s worth powering through. … I definitely recommend!
⭐This is one of his most terrifying books. Not because of the painting and not what happens both to and in it. That is King’s wonderful imagination taking flight and taking you along for the ride. The truly terrifying part is Norman. Because there are far too many Normans in the world holding their own Rose in a deadly grasp. Unfortunately, some are also cops, or other authority figures that act like they are expected to, most of the time anyway, in public and turn into their true vicious selves when they are behind closed doors. The warrior woman may be fiction but spouse abuse isn’t. THAT is the truly scary part of Rose Madder.
⭐I’m a constant King reader. I reread his books. I enjoy him that much. This book is one of my favorites. I encourage anyone to read it. It’s incredible, to me, that King could write such a book about battered women, from a female perspective being a man. He never ceases to amaze me. This is one you won’t want to put down.
⭐Bought 2nd hand as I like to recycle and reuse things to save resources. Great condition book. Did come with a very unexpected bookmark of a photograph of a semi naked lady. Usually I have received 2nd hand books with fliers for book stores. This was a much nicer book mark
⭐Up to a point, Rose Madder is an engrossing and well-crafted story. It contains the usual King ingredients of flawed, believable characters, a compelling storyline and a sense of the surreal and magical that makes his books so readable and other-worldly. But, this one goes on way too long. Having set up a strong story concerning Rosie and her flight from her abusive, appallingly violent cop husband Norman, things spiral spectacularly out kilter in a crazy, ultra-violent and highly unbelievable finale. It’s as if King doesn’t know how to bring things to end. Yet one more example of where editing and losing around 200 pages of this book would have made it so much better.
⭐The very first book I read by King and I read it cover to cover. It’s the story of a woman escaping her abusive cop husband and his mission to find her. There’s obviously an eerie twist but this isn’t the scary Stephen King you’d imagine. I first read it at 12 years old and, 23 years later, I still love it and would recommend it to everyone.
⭐I have read every story Stephen King has written.I started reading them, must be forty years ago. I read Rose Madder when it was new and I was a different person, in another lifetime. It was a different story then, than it was today.I’m glad I read it again.
⭐An enjoyable enough read but the the ‘alternative world’ is done less well than in other SK books such as Black House or Lisey’s Story and I don’t think it quite worked here.
