Description

In a perfect world, sixteen-year-old Phoebe Martins’ life would be a book. Preferably one filled with magic and a hot paranormal love interest. Unfortunately, her life probably wouldn’t even qualify for a quiet contemporary.

Everything changes when Phoebe learns that Dev, the hottest guy in the clarinet section, might actually have a crush on her. So, Phoebe turns to the heroines in her favorite books for inspiration, but becoming as awesome as her book characters isn’t as easy as it sounds. When another girl nets Dev for herself right out from under Phoebe’s nose, she’s crushed.

And, to up the suckage, she gets assigned as his co-counselor at a sixth grade camp and has to spend an entire week tied to the hip with the one guy on the planet she wanted to avoid. Can she make it through the potential danger of romantic bonfires and nature walks, or will her counseling career end in emotional disaster? Can she ever go back to her happy world of fictional boys after falling for the real thing?

Find out if Dev makes Phoebe forget all her book boyfriends in this first book of the Ever After Series.

User’s Reviews

From School Library Journal Gr 7–10—Sixteen-year-old South Jersey resident Phoebe has a small but devoted circle of friends, and they gently tease her about her obsession with fantasy books, archery, and knitting. Phoebe feels socially inadequate when it comes to the opposite sex and has a crush on handsome junior class president Kris. She doesn’t pick up the clues that gorgeous Dev is very interested in her. Phoebe uses the romance tactics portrayed in her fantasy novels to try to flirt with Kris, and when she permits her friends to help her with makeovers and more trendy and flattering clothing, she’s delighted that he finally notices her. On a camping trip where Phoebe is paired up as counselor with Dev, she finally has the opportunity to kiss Kris, but there are no sparks, and she’s tremendously disappointed. Well-developed characterization, sparkling and humorous dialogue, and a logical story line combine in author Bandeira’s easily relatable debut novel. VERDICT This gentle romance will spark high interest in middle schoolers and is an enjoyable start to the “Ever After” series.—Susan Riley, Mamaroneck Public Library, NY Review “Gr 7–10—Sixteen-year-old South Jersey resident Phoebe has a small but devoted circle of friends, and they gently tease her about her obsession with fantasy books, archery, and knitting. Since this is a frequently asked question about the series: all of the books in the series can be read as standalones.<3 Issy Reviews from Amazon users, collected at the time the book is getting published on UniedVRG. It can be related to shiping or paper quality instead of the book content: ⭐ I really enjoyed reading Bookishly Ever After, it was sooooo cute! Relatable, swoony, diverse, and the perfect book to start off 2016. Phoebe reminded me so much of my high school self, as I’m sure many other bookworms can relate. I didn’t read YA in high school (2000-2004, I’m ancient) but I did read a lot of Harry Potter and spy thrillers; I was quiet, somewhere in the middle of the social hierarchy, had a great group of friends (def crushed on one of them), and had a fantasy crush on a super hot guy one year older than me who didn’t know I existed. So yes, I relate :POne cool thing about this book is that we got to read parts of Phoebe’s favorite books! She was using all the romance tropes and tips in her fantasy and paranormal books for dating advice, and honestly I wanted to read those books too! I really appreciated that the author didn’t name drop current titles, which would make the book feel dated. Instead, she created original titles and excerpts with very familiar characters and storylines, so you definitely got the point. And Phoebe is a YA nut, I love it! I’ve had the feelings she experiences while reading and talking about books, and the scene waiting for her favorite author’s book signing was pitch perfect. I loved the way Bookishly Ever After embraced bookworm culture.I also loved that Phoebe was’t just a bookworm though; she knits, she practices archery, she goes to dances, and she has close relationships with her friends and family. I loved her group of friends! They tended to be cliches on the outside but so much more once you got to know them. Grace is a popular blonde cheerleader with a girlfriend, Em is the dramatic but loyal theater geek, Alec is a quiet Jewish guy (and the character I feel like we got to know the least), and Dev is the Indian love interest with a flair for musical theater and good natured teasing. It’s a well-rounded group! The background characters aren’t as notable; there are mean girls, vapid jocks, and run of the mill parents. Also you guys: the romance and flirting and omg-I-think-my-friend-has-a-crush-on-me-do-I-like-him-back was SO GREAT! Phoebe was awkward but not in a cringeworthy way and Dev was adorable. I loved their relationship when Phoebe actually let her guard down once in awhile and acted like herself. There *is* quite a bit of miscommunication which made me want to shake Phoebe because OH MY GOD GIRL, but you know how these books go. And the journey was flirty and cute as heck. We even get a really fun camp counselor sequence in the second half! It reminded me of working with 5th graders and talking Twilight and Harry Potter with them. Connecting with favorite books is great no matter the age of the reader.Unfortunately, the formatting of the eArc almost made it unreadable- words were out of order and missing, it was irritating. However, I’m glad I kept reading and I’m happy that I preordered a finished copy. I also didn’t love the (totally believable) miscommunication and Phoebe was frustrating at times (sadly reminding me of myself as a teen haha), but I really loved the friendships, the romance, and the diversity of the characters themselves and their hobbies. Bookishly Ever After is a super cute fluffy contemporary that I definitely recommend for fans of The Art of Lainey, Meant to Be, and Anna and the French Kiss. It’s the first in a series of what I’m hoping are companion books. I’d love to get to know more about Alec and I’m sure Em will get her own book too! ⭐ If this wasn't the most accurate contemporary book I've ever read, I'm not sure what is! lol I say this because of how much I related to it, even as a grown adult. And I'm not talking about just the books, I mean the awkwardness and building myself up with quotes as well lol This book definitely described my life and it was very cute to read about something that hit so close to home! Phoebe is quite the introvert. She reads and she knits at the mere age of 16. She loves her world of fiction (just like the rest of us) but once she gets a taste of reality she doesn't know how to handle it. How can she go back to just her books now that she sees what real life swooning is like? I really liked this book because it really went in-depth about us booknerds. There's so many quotes that I found hilarious or fell in love with because I could relate to it so much. Like the one about the "staring like he was an advanced reader copy" I literally laughed out loud at that one. Any book that I can relate to as much as I did with this one deserves at least 4 stars. Phoebe's awkwardness and failed attempts at flirting and bookish nature definitely hit close to home and I was aable to sympathize more with her because I could tell how she felt. I also liked that there was some surprise diversity in this one! The love interest is a POC! There are some nudges to his culture that I loved getting a glimpse of. I did a Google search and learned more about a different type of music that I now find awesome. I love when books can help you learn a little about other cultures. As for the romance, it was definitely a slow burn, but I chalk that up it being a series starter. But when they finally got it together, it was definitely worth it. In the span of 95%-98% that was all the romance, but I found myself swooning the entire time. There's book quoting, face caresses like in books, and last but not least, admission that he's ok with her reading. Of course I fell head over heels for him! lol The only reason I didn't give this five stars was because I was a little upset that it seemed that Phoebe never realized she didn't need to be those fictional characters(...wait.... lolol) , she just needed to be herself and that's what he liked most. Sure it was mentioned, but she skimmed over it. I just wanted her to realize she WAS good enough for him and that the fiction she idolizes isn't always better than reality. Even if "normalcy is overrated," I for some reason just needed her to realize that's not ALWAYS true! This book was super cute and such a quick read. I can't wait to see what Bandeira does with book two. I'm hoping for a companion novel that tells about one of their other friends from the group. I'm also hoping for some more excerpts from the books that Phoebe reads becauseeeee Im sorry but the leprechaun actually sounds good lol Bandeira your debut was a definite success for me and I can't wait to see what Phoebe and friends (and her BOOKS!) do next! ⭐ Rating: 3.5/5One of the reasons I picked up this book was because it was about a girl who loved to read. I mean, what better book to read than to read a book about a girl who is just like me? This book was really cool read.I really liked that this book was really realistic. It was really funny when Phoebe turned to her books when she developed a crush on Dev. I could totally see that happening in real life. I really liked how you could really connect with the characters because the characters were like actual people in this world, and I bet some people could find connections with their friends to the characters. This whole book is pretty relatable, which is something I love about it. Phoebe was a super relatable character. Readers can definitely connect because Phoebe is a bookworm who is introverted, and I assume there are many people who fit that description that I just described.Bookishly Ever After was a nice, refreshing read for me because I usually don’t read contemporary fiction and it was a nice change of pace. ⭐ Review:Phoebe is a booknerd. A sit in line for hours for a book launch, read during lunch period, book boyfriend loving, endless TBR possessing, bookworm. She's also a junior in high school and just figuring out this whole dating thing and what better way to navigate love than with your favorite book characters on your side? When Phoebe's friend Em decides to try and set her up with mutual friend Dev, complete with a makeover and endless opportunities for embarrassment, Pheobe turns to her favorite female heroes for advice. And, some results may be disastrous.I really had no doubt that I would enjoy this book. It's a light fluffy contemporary with a main character who is as obsessed with fictional characters as I am, what's not to like? Seriously, I couldn't find much, this review may verge into gushing territory...Bookishly Ever After is the perfect book for anyone who wants something fun and fast, that will make you smile and think "oh my god, me too!" and, if you're like me, get secondhand embarrassment a few times.I really enjoyed this one. I mean, as a book lover. you can't not connect with Pheobe. I loved her so much. She really grows a lot throughout too. The author perfectly describes being a book lover, Pheobe would be reading and it would explain how she just got sucked into a book or that tingly sensation you get when you're favorite characters are about to kiss and I would literally just be thinking "me too!". Honestly, she was kind of stupid sometimes but I understood the things she acted stupid about. I just really connected with her because she's also super shy and I've always been that girl, you know?Secondary character wise, yes please! SO MANY amazing side characters. You have Pheobe's group of friends, Em, Grace, and Alec. You have Dev (friend and love interest), who is definitely swoon worthy (he reads YA books to impress her!). And Trixie (Phoebe's sister) and Leia (Grace's girlfriend). They're all awesome and unique. Em was my favorite but also, I felt at some points she was a bitch and I didn't understand why, almost like the author didn't even mean to write her that way, maybe? And altogether I would've liked a little more of each character.Dev irritated me only because he (and Em and Grace) constantly acted and talked about how Pheobe read too much and she should be living and all this. I loved Pheobe though, because she just kept being herself. Readings and knitting and loving her life the way she wanted to. But it was strange because at one point it was like he got it then he was almost being mean and snobbish about it??? I don't know, maybe I'm reading too much into it.Plot wise, I guess you could say there wasn't much of one besides Pheobe trying to "seduce" Dev? I didn't really notice it while reading though, I was enjoying it so much. The only real downside for me really was the passages of her favorite books. They're interspaced between chapters and have little notes Pheobe left for herself and everything. They kind of just bored me. I guess it was something cool to include but I found myself skipping most of them.OVERALL: I LOVED this book and highly recommend it!Would I Recommend This? Yes.To whom? Booknerds who love YA contemporary. Yes, all of you, read it!Will I read more from this author(or series)? 100% yes ⭐ Rating: 3 1/2 stars1 star for the cover, another for the cute romance between Phoebe and Dev, and another for engaging writing. The half is just to give it almost 4 stars. The cussing got on my nerves, and I didn't find the "f" bomb necessary. This is not a Middle Grade book, but for high schoolers. There is some innuendo, but thankfully the romance you read about goes no further than kissing.Honestly, the first time I saw how long this book was, I doubted I would be interested, but once I began it, I ended up liking it more than I thought!Recommended for 14 years and older who enjoy YA Contemporary Romance. ⭐ Cover: GORGEOUS!This is adorable! I loved the integration of imaginary books and quotes from books throughout BOOKISHLY EVER AFTER. Phoebe swoons over characters, gets passionately involved in the stories, and has a hard time setting aside a novel. She fangirls, she dresses up as characters, and she carries a book with her at all times. And of course, we need a love interest. Enter Dev. Readers will swoon over Dev! So sweet how these two finally come together. I'm looking forward to book 2! Readaholics, unite! My favorite quotes from this book were:"I wasn't the kind of girl who fell for musicians, but it wasn't fair that Dev had a beautiful singing voice that did things to the surface of my skin. I opened my eyes, and there was Lexie again, in the wings, staring at Dev like he was an advanced reader copy of the last book in a series.""I'm supposed to push a loose strand of hair out of your face, then let my hand linger on your cheek, or isn't that how, like, every other kissing scene in those books you read goes?" ⭐ I am so happy to have been able to relate to Phoebe and her love for books. I got so excited when she talked about her tbr pile and her love of bookstores. The romance was cute and it was good that Phoebe and Dev were friends. I think my favorite part was the way that Phoebe treated her campers as people and respected them. I would recommend this book for book lovers and anyone who enjoys fast, light reads.*I received a digital copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. ⭐ This is a book for people who love books. It's probably especially a book for people who love YA and are book bloggers because you guys, the struggle is real. There are a lot of sentences I could use as support for this thesis, but this one works the best."...there was Lexie again...staring at Dev like he was an [ARC] of the last book in a series."We can all totally picture that, right?Meanwhile, I overidentified with Feebs and also fought the urge to cheer (literally, out loud) multiple times during the book.Basically, this book is just a complete delight. It works as a rom-com or as a love letter to books and the people who adore them. I loved every second I spent reading it and cannot wait for the sequel.Highly recommended. ⭐ Being a huge fan of YA lit myself, I'm essentially the target audience of this book -- and I loved it. It was fun and sweet and hilarious and the characters were super endearing. Super excited for the sequel! ⭐ As an English teacher always on the prowl for novels for my classroom, the type I tend to loathe reading is teen romance, however, I really enjoyed this book. The author's descriptions of the mind games and insecurity of teen dating were spot on, and the descriptions transported me back to my own experiences. This book was a very enjoyable read with a satisfying ending!
