Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐This is written by hardcore academics, for hardcore academics (and for their students). Lots of esoteric sociological/philosophical terms, well-divided into essays by specific subjects. Note two of the quotes that Amazon provides:’I would recommend to all serious students who wish to begin studying this country.’ – China Perspectives’Should be read by all serious scholars of contemporary China.’ – Asian AffairsThe key word is SERIOUS. It is excellent for its purposes, but this is not for a casual reader who wants to learn about Chinese culture and politics. If you need it for class, then you need it for class (though maybe not really, depending on how your prof runs things), and it’s very informative and well-written. You will learn a lot. Otherwise, skip this book.

⭐I have completed a graduate course sequence relating to Chinese Studies at a major university in the United States. Huaiyin Li was my mentor in the subject at the University of Texas. Chinese Studies, as a university study in the United States, was a small world. Most of the professors know each other, and they use each other’s resources for their classes. Since I graduated, I wanted to know more regarding recent research from the major Chinese Studies professors. Therefore, I purchased this book at a local bookstore.Overall, I believe the collection of essays are acceptable to satisfactory. Some of the essays were extensions or rewrites of older essays published in one of the major Chinese studies journals in the United States. For instance, i believe the third essay, conflict, resistance and transformation of the hukou system was re-printed or re-written from an earlier essay by Dr. Wang in China Quarterly. Dr. Wang’s analysis of the hukou system represented detailed scholarly insights regarding an unfair system in China. However, for most Chinese studies students, the analysis was not something new.Dr. Pei’s essay regarding the resistance against the Party illustrated the weakness of the collection. The author presented a historical overview of the various political factions resisting Party rule. The essay lacked insightful analysis into the economic causes of the student rebellion in China in the 1980’s. Many citations by Dr. Pei were newspaper and periodical articles of the period in China. The essay was very superficial and lacked actual scholarly analysis.Overall, I find the book good but not great. I hope to read a better book regarding Chinese Society in the future.
