Description

Defeated in the Sino-Japanese War 1894–95 and the Boxer Rebellion of 1900, Imperial China collapsed into revolution and a republic was proclaimed in 1912. From the death of the first president in 1916 to the rise of the Nationalist Kuomintang government in 1926, the differing regions of this vast country were ruled by endlessly forming, breaking and re-forming alliances of regional generals who ruled as ‘warlords’. These warlords acted essentially as local kings and much like Sengoku-period Japan, fewer, larger power-blocks emerged, fielding armies hundreds of thousands strong. In the midto late 1920s some of these regional warlords. This book will reveal each great warlord as well as the organization of their forces which acquired much and very varied weaponry from the west including the latest French air force bombers. They were also joined by Japanese, White Russian and some Western soldiers of fortune which adds even more colour to a fascinating and oft-forgotten period.

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐After the fall of the imperial government of China the military governors established themselves as local powers, thus opening up a period of constant warfare as these new warlords fought each other. In the confusion of era the warlord armies acquired different weapons and uniforms (although the pattern of the uniforms was largely that of the new republic) and alliances between warlords complicated things further.Illustrated with photos and original artwork, this slim volume does its best to put this conflict in context.

⭐The term “Warlords” of China always bring to mind of many, “Crazy” men fighting and killing many people. They came to power after 1911 when the Republic of China was being formed after the fall of the Empire Periods of many centuries The large area of China with the many ethnic groups were spread out with little or no government services which led to the Warlords in many areas. By the start of the 2nd Sino-Japanese War in early 1930’s some joined either by choice or by intense fighting the newly formed KMT and/or the Communist movements in China.

⭐Anybody even passingly familiar with the 20th-century history of China has heard of “warlords,” but very few books on the subject in English have existed to my knowledge. This book covers the various warlords and their armies, which ranged from barely-armed rabble one jump away from the bandits they had been to fairly-professionally-run and trained troops.

⭐WELL WRITTEN ACCOUNT OF A TUMULTUOUS PERIOD IN CHINESE HISTORY. MAKES SOME SENSE OF A CONFUSING PERIOD IN CHINESE HISTORY.

⭐It gave me the information I needed on China during this time period. It covers almost everything I needed to know about this subject. I really loved the pictures.

⭐A detailed and interesting to read history book of a time period too commonly forgotten by time. Definitely recommend it.

⭐I was mistaken in believing that this book would be a history of the Warlords period in China. It is not. It is a good reference if you want to know what caliber machine guns and what color uniforms each warlord army used. It does not however provide a narrative of the events of the period. It provides in-depth technical information that might be most useful reference information to those readers who are already familiar with the history.

⭐It’s too short, feels like a little kids book. Has very little information on the historical figures of the time. Reads more like an early 2000’s History Channel ten minute early morning special

⭐Short and to the point – for the full story see the same author’s The Armies of Warlord China 1911-1928 reviewed above. This is that books little brother and the only problem with it is the shortness – it is well written and well illustrated and if you can’t stretch to the price of the bigger volume this is a decent compromise. Splendid colour plates.

⭐Pretty good book about an interesting period in Chinese history. A pity that the Chinese names are not transliterated using standard Hanyu Pinyin as this could lead to confusion. It would have been good to have given the various names in both old and new forms of Chinese characters.

⭐I bought the book because of my history coursework, which I had chosen to do on the short-term significance on the warlords. I found the pictures particularly helpful, I had not come across them in my independent research, and the detailed captions were very informative. Very good introduction as well, speaking about the ‘feudal’ warlord regimes in terms of modern day warfare, taking them out of the medieval context I had been viewing them under. However, the timeline seemed a bit superfluous – would have preferred it written instead of just a list of events in chronological order, some more analysis would have been good. Otherwise, a very good book 🙂

⭐As said by the title. Great resource and info on teh Chinese warlord armies of the 1920s. However some very important events in this era are not mentioned such as teh Central Plains war of 1930 which was probably one of the most pivotal wars of this age as it signalled the close of the warlord era as the KMT was victorious vs. the warlords and weakened the KMT considerably which the Japanese took advantage of invading and conquering Manchuria in 1931. Anyways great book and resource.
