Description
“The terror is relentless” (Publishers Weekly) in Stephen King’s #1 national bestseller about a little mining town, Desperation, that many will enter on their way to somewhere else. But getting out is not easy as it would seem…Located off a desolate stretch of Interstate 50, Desperation, Nevada, has few connections with the rest of the world. It is a place, though, where the seams between worlds are thin. And it is a place where several travelers are abducted by Collie Entragian, the maniacal police officer of Desperation. Entragian uses various ploys for the abductions, from an arrest for drug possession to “rescuing” a family from a nonexistent gunman. There’s something very wrong here, all right, and Entragian is only the surface of it. The secrets embedded in Desperation’s landscape, and the evil that infects the town like some viral hot zone, are both awesome and terrifying. But as one of the travelers, young David Carver, seems to know—though it scares him nearly to death to realize it—so are the forces summoned to combat them. “Stephen King’s knack for turning the stray junk of pop culture into sick, darkly engrossing thrills has rarely been this much in evidence as in Desperation” (Salon).
User’s Reviews
Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐I re-read books sometimes. Not many. Life is short and being in my 60’s the road ahead isn’t as long as the road behind me. But, Stephen King is my favorite author and “Desperation” is there underrated. You often hear about The Shining, The Stand, Carrie, IT. But, while not as epic or even as much fun to read this novel is deeper than any of them. It was as good literature wise as any of the so called pompous high fiction that is to books what classical music is to rock and roll. This would be rock and roll. It also treats the subject of God with maturity rarely seen in pop fiction. Without the hysteria or just so stories of fundamental religion and without the eye rolling snark of pop culture intellectualism. It s God love? Yes. Is God cruel? Yes, it can seem that way. But, maybe things are deeper than they seem. From a jaded womanizing literary star author to an All American Family to the back end of nowhere in the American West. Questions of good and evil. Snatches of Rock and roll and Country Western. It’s Stephen King being Stephen King. And that ain’t half bad.
⭐This is my second time reading this book, in all its phenomenal glory. My first read was when I was a teenager and had this unquenchable thirst for Stephen King. But this time around, several years later, I realized that I didnt quite understand WHAT I was reading. As an avid reader of things strange and macabre, Stephen King will always be my favorite writer. The elements therein are only able to be picked out by someone who can understand the fight between good and evil. It’s not just the war between the two in our world, but it is the war within ourselves as well. Stephen doesnt have our Heavenly Father fully understood in this novel, but he is extremely close when it comes to certain scenes. I can appreciate some of his understanding, since I came to the Lord several years ago, and I am uncharacteristically in awe that a writer of horror can somewhat understand some of the Lord’s nature in his novel. Reading it the second time, I can grasp the understanding and meaning of this historically and seemingly unending fight for our spirits, our souls. And as always, I can appreciate the talent he was given to paint these pictures so flawlessly when telling his tales.I didn’t understand this book the first time but I was still entertained by it. Wasn’t until the second time that I finally understood where Stephen was going and where he went.I highly recommend this novel to Stephen King fans, but mostly to those who can and will find the hidden meaning interlaced entirely throughout this novel. As always, Stephen, you are the best!! Kudos!!
⭐I’m a Stephen king fan from way back in the 70’s, starting with “Carrie.”This is one of his greatest. In it, King reveals both the best and worst of himself- his alcoholism, his recovery, his own weakness and strength, and his belief in a higher power. It’s brimming with the typical detail he pours into his craft. I’m not going to do a synopsis here; you can find it in the book description above. I found out about the book while scrolling through horror movies on Amazon. I had never even heard of it, but it came at the right time as my faith in God and the whole human race was failing. I didn’t see any political reference, which was fine by me. Even if you aren’t a believer, there is enough detail, both in horror and in just plain old great storytelling, to capture and hold your attention. Read it. You won’t be sorry.
⭐This was pretty good in the usual Stephen King fashion with one caveat. Stephen King has taken himself to be so political lately that bleeds through and his writing and its is offensive to those that don’t hold his liberal views. Also I think he’s living in the past, because his writing reflects certain little things that just strike you as being almost senile. But it Stephen King he still writes well and tells an interesting story.
⭐I highly recommend getting The Regulators by Stephen King along with this book! They are sister books (The Regulators is written by King’s pseudonym Richard Bachman) and they have the same basic characters but in a slightly different universe. Both are fast paced and classic Stephen King. Love them both and have read them multiple times
⭐This is the first book that King has blended religion. God and the devil. Good and evil. I was quite taken with the concept of Gods blessings and wrath intertwined with the evil of man. I loved the intensity of the people both believers and non believers that brings them to an Epiphany. It was really his best book. Loved it.
⭐Extraordinary book with characters who touch your heart and become real in your mind. The ending is a surprise and unexpectedly heartwrenching. An awesome read and I recommend it to all King fans.
⭐I cried and identified with so many of the characters. But most of all, little David. So much burden for a young person to carry as he loses all of hid family. King is a master of telling us a story that while encompassed in the surreal, questions our very real existence and feelings of a God.
⭐(contains spoilers)I’m a big Stephen King and although this one had its moments, it wasn’t one of his best. That said, it was 700 pages long and held my attention throughout so it was enjoyable enough thanks to King’s accessible prose. I also felt a real sense of place; the Nevada desert and ghost town were well described and realised, and King’s descriptions of the beasts that dwell there were also very good. In fact, the book is at its best when the protagonists find an abandoned movie theatre and hunker down to avoid a raging storm; there was a intimacy and atmosphere to the novel at this point and I really enjoyed it.Conversely, the characters here are stock King creations; wunderkind (David), alcoholic writer (Johnny), the solid guy (Steve) and a few others, none of them were particularly likeable or memorable; Johnny is almost unbearable and David is so earnest and both are very grating. The main bad guy (or thing) terrorising them is Tak; a evil spirit disturbed whilst mining the Nevada hills that can enter the body of people and control them; compared to King’s other bad guys like Flagg and Pennywise (Shudder!) it isn’t great and the novel suffers for it.King is always a easy read but he’s usually a lot more fun and clever than this.6/10
⭐Audible is truly wonderful if, like me, you can read books more than once. but imagine if you could have the master him self, The Boss, read it to you. My mind takes the originally read words and creates a new image. I get to read a Stephen King book twice as though its new! A Fantastic story! Can Tak!
⭐Yes, Desparation starts well but after 100 pages or so the plot thins and I found myself caring little for the characters. I have read 30 or so Stephen King books and they form a line on my bookshelf in order of enjoyment. This one is in the last 10!
⭐Brilliant, chilling book but why do they end the book with more questions than answers why was David praying at end? Was Johnny already dead and ghost? Does David stay with Brian and parents? Or Mary? Brilliant book though
⭐This has never been one of my favourite SK books, but it’s still ahead of the other King wannabes by a country mileGripping plotline, well rounded characters that develop throughout the story and the usual insightful writing that shows the authors understanding of the human condition.I make a point of not giving a synopsis of the books I review – I don’t think my interpretation of a novel is any good to anyone but me. It’s also a guaranteed way of sneaking in to another reader’s imagination and colouring it.If you enjoy excellent writing, are prepared to suspend disbelief and don’t mind a little gore, this is definitely one to read
