Description
A pair of sisters find themselves at a crossroads in this dazzling new novel from the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Something Borrowed, Where We Belong, and The One & Only. First Comes Love is a story about family, friendship, and the courage to follow your own heart—wherever that may lead.
Growing up, Josie and Meredith Garland shared a loving, if sometimes contentious, relationship. Josie was impulsive, spirited, and outgoing, Meredith hardworking, thoughtful, and reserved. When tragedy strikes, their delicate bond splinters.
Fifteen years later, Josie and Meredith are in their late thirties, following very different paths. Josie, a first grade teacher, is single—and this close to swearing off dating for good. What she wants more than the right guy, however, is to become a mother—a feeling that is heightened when her ex-boyfriend’s daughter is assigned to her class. Determined to have the future she’s always wanted, Josie decides to take matters into her own hands.
On the outside, Meredith is the model daughter with the perfect life. A successful attorney, she’s married to a wonderful man, and together they’re raising a beautiful four-year-old daughter. Yet lately Meredith feels dissatisfied and restless, secretly wondering if she chose the life that was expected of her rather than the one she truly desired.
As the anniversary of their tragedy looms, and painful secrets from the past begin to surface, Josie and Meredith must not only confront the issues that divide them but also come to terms with their own choices. In their journey toward understanding and forgiveness, both sisters discover that they need each other more than they knew—and that in the search for true happiness, love always comes first.

Reviews from Amazon users, collected at the time the book is getting published on UniedVRG. It can be related to shiping or paper quality instead of the book content:
⭐ Ugh! Once again, I am completely disappointed in her endings. Nearly 400 pages, mostly of inner musings and background info dump writings. Too much tell, not enough of story. If she had spent more time on the actual story and plot, maybe the characters would have had an actual resolution. The main characters were completely unlikable. Josie was a self-destructive nut; Meredith was just… a bitch! Not only was there absolutely zero personal journey change or resolution but their relationships were still pretty much in the same state they began in. If that wasn’t enough, she used a lot of page space to tell of a conflict resolution for her book, Love The One You’re With… because, essentially, there was no real resolution in that novel either. I think it is poor craftsmanship tie loose ends with one novel, intermittently throughout another one… really!Such a disappointing read. I don’t think I’ll be reading any more of her books.
⭐ I like a lot of Griffin’s books. But this one was just not good. I know Giffin is a lawyer and all, but she always seems to have a female attorney in her book that is the strong logical one. And trust me I know a lot of attorneys and they’re not always sensible, ethical or logical. In the book, “First Comes Love,” two sisters are grieving over the death of their sibling. They’ve never been close and the tragedy separates them even more. The older sister, Josie, is the carefree impulsive sister who is an elementary school teacher who can’t seem to find herself. The practical younger sister, Meredith, is, of course, the lawyer who has done everything right her entire life. She married the right man, has the right career and she’s the one who holds the family together. And you’re not going to believe this…but even though she’s married to a rich gorgeous man, has a child and the perfect career she isn’t happy (eye roll). The ending of this story sucked! I didn’t enjoy it. Not my favorite Giffin novel and I’m ususally a fan!
⭐ Boring, trite and the usual Giffin formula of drivel. don’t waste your money
⭐ I truly hope Meredith and Josie weren’t based on Giffin and her real life sister…because Meredith and Josie are kind of awful, in different ways. Meredith is Scrooge McGrumpyPants and Josie is a 14 year old in a 38 year old’s body. Both need therapy. LOADS of therapy. And since they’re central to the story, it doesn’t make for riveting reading. The one bright spot in the entire novel…Josie’s relationship with Gabe.Final thoughts? I’d give this book a hard pass.2.5 stars
⭐ I guess it’s inevitable to compare with other books by the same author, and this one just comes out lacking in all aspects. The plot is terribly dull and I felt all the characters were sort of unlikable.I honestly struggled to get through it to the end. It’s especially disappointing as I’d loved other books by this author, which were fun and engaging.
⭐ I just loved Gabe! The relationship between Josie and Gabe was awesome, which I don’t understand why Pete was needed in the story…… Don’t get me wrong Pete was cool:), but I don’t think he was needed. I am disappointed that Gabe & Josie didn’t make the baby the normal way and that they don’t get together.Meredith….gees what a witch…maybe that’s unfair..she is confused and very depressed with unhappiness. I wanted to smack her several times for her attitude.I can see that a death in the family can impact everyone , but there is also a point that you have to move on…but in this situation Josie had to much guilt, Meredith couldn’t seem to understand that everyone grieves differently, parents couldn’t come together. Maybe in the future the girls could get their act together and grow up, which could happen.Characters…my favorite was Gabe…would love to have that man in my life! I thought relationship between the two roommates was awesome, but was a letdown that author didn’t let them be. Towards end of story I really didn’t want to read anymore about Meredith…so annoying and I really didn’t have any sympathy for her:( …..I would NOT recommend buying this book, but maybe borrow it and read it when you can’t sleep.
⭐ I was very disappointed in this book. All of the characters seemed shallow, empty, self-absorbed and narcissistic. Not even one character was likeable or relateable. The story line was stupid and pointless. It was very boring and turned me off the author. I would never read another book by this author. Her skills have degenerated over time.
⭐ I absolutely LOVE Emily Giffin and everything she’s written… so with that disclaimer, First Comes Love wasn’t her best. Although still a very good book, I couldn’t relate to the characters and story lines as much as I have with her past books. Something was missing in this one for me. I still read the book in a day, and the writing was very well done in classic Emily Giffin fashion. I’d recommend it!
⭐ After reading The One and Only two years ago I was upset. I am a huge Emily Giffin fan. I have read every book. But the last one just was not good. So I was worried that I would be disappointed again.Happy to say I was not. This book touches on how tragedy can disrupt the lives of others. Everyone responds differently to tragedy and this book shows that well.We follow the lives of two sisters– Meredith and Josie– after their family is rocked by a loss. We pick up with the sisters years later as we read how that single event shaped their adulthood.I really enjoyed this book and the depth of the characters. Couldn’t put it down and finished reading it on the bus from Alnwick to Newcastle. Well done Mrs. Giffin! Welcome back!
⭐ This was a real and heartwarming story, written smoothly and cleverly. Definitely made me laugh a few times and tear up as well. I guess my only criticism would be that there didn’t seem to be much change in either sister, and that left the ending a little flat for me. It wasn’t bad, it just wasn’t great. There was some build up to a certain event (no spoilers) from the beginning of the book, but then the event happened earlier than it was planned, and neither of the two main characters got what they wanted from the event (like not even close), and that just left me wondering what the point was. All in all, still worth reading.
