Description

Mermaid Annika is from the sea, and it is there she must return after her quest to find the stars. New to this world, her purity and beauty are nothing less than breathtaking, along with her graceful athleticism, as her five new friends discovered when they retrieved the fire star.

Now, through space and time, traveler Sawyer King has brought the guardians to the island of Capri, where the water star is hidden. And as he watches Annika in her element, he finds himself drawn to her joyful spirit. But Sawyer knows that if he allows her into his heart, no compass could ever guide him back to solid ground…

And in the darkness, their enemy broods. She lost one star to the guardians, but there is still time for blood to be spilled—the mermaid’s in the water and the traveler’s on the land. For she has forged a dangerous new weapon. Something deadly and unpredictable. Something human.

User’s Reviews

Review “Perennial favorite Roberts picks up the action right after events from the first book in her Guardians trilogy…The heroine in this book is a mermaid unfamiliar with human culture, so a charming aspect of this story is her learning curve on human behavior. Great reading fun!”—RT Book Reviews

⭐ The second book in the Guardians trilogy finds our group of six in Capri searching for the second falling star. The one concentrates of the romance between Sawyer and Annika. This is a romance that seemingly has a built-in ending date. Annika is a mermaid who was given legs so that she could take part in the quest to find the stars but will return to the sea in three months without them. Sawyer has a device that lets him travel in space and time.Sawyer is reluctant to begin a relationship with Annika for a number of reasons. The primary one for him is that Annika is new to life on land and dealing with humans. He sees her as an innocent in need of protection. Despite her lack of familiarity with humans, Annika is a woman who knows what she wants. Our villain, the dark goddess Nerezza, has found herself a human partner in Andre Malmon who is a bored killer who has had previous run-ins with Sawyer and with Riley. If he weren’t so irredeemably evil, I could feel sorry for him because his relationship with Nerezza changes him for the worse. But Malmon makes his bargain eagerly and ends up changed and enslaved to her.Since one of the main viewpoint characters in this one isn’t human, we get a lot of Annika’s joy and curiosity. We also get a lot of opportunities to see her struggling with idioms and customs of humans. For example, she has a very different way of dealing with nakedness and talking about sex. Luckily, her new sisters Riley and Sasha are there to clear up some of her confusion.Again, this story is trademark Roberts in the relationships she builds between the characters and their acceptance of each others strengths and weaknesses. Friendships matter in a Roberts book. I can’t wait to read the next one both to see the end to their quest and to see the relationship that is coming next.

⭐ ~~~ No Spoilers in my reviews ~~~Note to readers… If you’re new to the Guardians Trilogy, I highly recommend reading Stars of Fortune (Book One, the Guardians Trilogy) first. Book One truly sets everything up and improves the pleasure of reading Bay of Sighs. I guarantee that any reader beginning with Book Two will not only wish that they had read the books in order, they will also turn to immediately begin reading Stars of Fortune. We have another great new original publication by Nora Roberts in the Guardians Trilogy! Bay of Sighs, book two in the aforementioned trilogy, continues where Stars of Fortune (book 1) left off. The guardians are still pursuing the stars – one per book – while the relationships between the six continue to develop. As any Nora Roberts reader recognizes and I believe now expects, 3 women and 3 men featured in a trilogy allows one of the greatest pleasures of Ms. Roberts readers, her incredible talent for the perfect mix of developing romances, focusing heavily on one romantic couple per book, as well as fleshing out the deepening interpersonal relationships between the six.As the general plot was laid out in book 1, there was more availability in this book for the other characters’ details and motivations. Of course there is no shortage of action and suspense either, both written as well as romance by Ms. Roberts.Seriously, is there anything she isn’t able to write excellently???- I read an average of 5 books per week and there are very few books I ever read twice. I almost always find at minimum 3-5 proofreading errors and I don’t recall the last time I caught any errors in new NR publications. I read most genres and have had these reading habits since I was a child. The ratio of books I’d look forward to re-reading versus the number of books in my personal library is minuscule. I have quite a few more Nora Roberts/ JD Robb (NR books actually) that I am able to truly enjoy reading again than any other authors. The greatest compliments I am personally able to give any author are actually wanting to read the book(s) again as well as missing the characters and “wondering” what they’re up to as well as where their paths lead to in the future. I wholeheartedly extend these compliments to Ms. Roberts and thank her for diligently writing with such talent for all of her readers. My only wish is that she would revisit some of her previous series and pen new novels with the characters lives present day. We can only hope that maybe one day she’ll do so.My only complaint (really more of an observation) is that going into any trilogy / series readers generally assume that the events in the second book / next to final edition will all work out and line up as a bridge to connect the final book. However, as part of her own special magic, Ms. Roberts masterfully keeps her readers glued straight through to the final page of Bay of Sighs.Ms. Roberts, thank you for a fantastic Saturday afternoon with Sasha, Annika, Riley, Bran, Doyle and Sawyer!I’ll be missing them until I finish the trilogy…

⭐ My review for this book is similar to my review for the entire series (pasted below). The one thing I will say is that Bay of Sighs is my favorite book in series in terms of the characters (and their development). One thing I will note, though, is that as we neared the end of the book, I felt it ended too quickly and abruptly, as if there was a rush to wrap things up.I’m a long-time fan of Nora Roberts, and enjoyed this book (as well as the two that followed). However, when comparing them to some of her previous trilogies involving mystical quests (the Circle Trilogy The Circle Trilogy: Morrigan’s Cross; Dance of the Gods; Valley of Silence , the Sign of Seven Seven Nora Roberts The Sign of Seven Trilogy , or the Keys Trilogy) this series didn’t quite live up to them. The story was good (if notably similar to previous works) and the characters interesting and engaging, but to me it read as half-hearted (like the “light” version of her previous work). These books are definitely worth reading, and I have enjoyed them very much. If you’re looking for a fun, light read, I’d say go for it. Nora Roberts is a gifted writer with a great imagination and a knack for creating interwoven characters. She shows readers not just individual (and interesting/unusual) characters, but also units of characters as couples, and as “families” (i.e., the unit the 6 distinct characters make together). She has done that again with this trilogy. My only complaint is that these books didn’t grab me in the same way as some of her earlier work, as if they were missing some indefinable element, or were somehow unfinished. That doesn’t stop them from having a prime spot on my “shelf” (that is, the metaphorical shelf in my Kindle library). Despite my relative approval of this book when it is compared to some of my favorite Nora Roberts stories, it is definitely a good read.

⭐ Enjoyable read as all Nora Roberts are for me. This second book of the Guardian Trilogy was slow going for me. Something about the dialogue seemed to drag on and be confusing. I wasn’t certain I like the character Annika because I didn’t grasp her innocence early on. Once the book got going though, I enjoyed it to the end. It was the harshest violent scene I’ve read in a Nora Roberts book. Thankfully it was shorter lived then I expected. I expected a good ending and I got one. I am looking forward to the end of this trilogy. I will most likely not read another as Nora Roberts writes as though she plugs in different names, changes up the scenery but the story always follows the same MO. I’m getting bored. Time to move on until she writes another book like The Collector which was by far my favorite. But do enjoy this book on your journey.

⭐ I will be totally honest and say that this is not my favorite of this trilogy, BUT – also being honest… it is necessary to the storyline, of course. There is continued violence in this one, which is somewhat mitigated by the development of the friendships, teamwork and love story Ms. Roberts always works into her NR series. I was a bit disappointed to find several editing issues in this book, however – misspellings and at least one grammatical misusage. That aside, it is still a good book, a great series, and I am rereading it for at least the 4th time, so it is good enough for that at any rate.I really, really wish I could be a proofreader for some of my favorite authors. I weary of reading what should be a great book and instead finding a plethora of missed edits, which lowers the book to merely good at best.

⭐ This book is wonderful – imaginative and fascinating. Usually the middle book is a trilogy is slightly disappointing. The initial interest in discovering the main characters and learning about the journey that those characters are meant to have is missing and, frequently, especially with Ms. Roberts’s books, the main narrative voice switches to a different character. While the narrative voice switched, the new character was just as compelling as Sasha had been. Moreover, the action and storyline continued to build with new characters being introduced and the story just flowed. However, I think it would have been hard to follow had I not read the beginning book in the series first. With that caveat, I really recommend this novel.

⭐ I am a huge fan of Nora Roberts, especially her trilogies. However, this one is just plain awful. Same old story, same old characters, and same old formula for plot and character development that has been used way too much in her books lately. The first book was OK. I was hoping for better with the second book but I was sorely disappointed. I will read the third book just because I am OCD that way and have to finish the series. Maybe it will be better. Not holding my breath though.

⭐ I love just about everything Nora Roberts writes. I read some negative reviews about the first book in this series and wondered, “Well, what do people want?” They complained that Ms. Roberts just didn’t have the “stuff” she used to. I disagree. Of course, she’s going to try to write differently than she did 20 years ago as she works to keep her writing fresh and to try different things. As a fledgling fantasy writer myself, I know how very difficult it is just to write anything! I take inspiration and motivation from Nora Roberts. The Guardian series is great and fun to read. I like the six guardians very much and enjoyed this one in Annika’s point of view especially. Full of action, fantasy, romance, suspense, and yucky enemies… it was great. I’m looking forward to the third book and will continue to be one of Ms. Roberts’ loyal fans.

⭐ The Guardians are still trying to collect all the stars and keep them from Nereeza who wants to darken the world and put it in her control. In this book, Sawyer and Anni are the main characters. No spoilers – the guardians do their thing and the bad guys do theirs. This book, like the first, ends exactly where the next picks up. To read it as a stand-alone would be very confusing. Fun read.

⭐ This story of love, power over who and good winning over evil, truly amazing. I could actually see Anni as she twirled to get the stone. Reading of how n these last two battles of Doyle and Bran help Riley get out of her clothes as she becomes the”wolf”. I have not wanted to put this book down. I am cheering these Guardians on. I respect how they have band together ..So awesome! I enjoy all of Nora Roberts books that I have read so far.I truly enjoy the series. I have one more and will start it tomorrow. I was understanding some of the weave of the different guardian and their skill! A long time back when I was in high school, I read some of Taylor Cardwell (??) stories of those that were Romans, etc. It caught my interest and now this series by Nora Roberts has brought back the guardians.
