Description

An action-packed short story featuring Dan “Spider” Shepherd during his days as an SAS trooper in Afghanistan. It’s November 2001 and Shepherd is sent on a dangerous mission to a Taliban stronghold on the trail of the most wanted man in the world – Osama Bin Laden.

Friendly Fire is just under 14,000 words, about thirty pages, perfect if you have half an hour to spare.

⭐ In this short story Leather’ s favorite character “Spider”Shepherd and his SAD unit are tasked to follow upon Intel that Bin Laden might be hiding in the mountains in Tora Bora Afghanistan. This a. mean, treacherous, challenge for the unit that will test the air support, heavy mortar squads, snipers, and assault units to the maximum when they find what appears to be a large Taliban in a valley with mountains encircling the flat area. Caves are carved out of some of the mountains and trucks are seen delivering materials into them. A. battle plan begins with an assault by units on ATVs supported by mortar fire. Somehow the mortar fire is inaccurate and is falling on SAS troops. The. Taliban recover and counter attack. Opportunities arise and Spider believes he sees. Bin Laden escaping on a mule along a path on the side of the mountain well within range. He calls Command for permission to shoot…… The author describes the battle scene and the subsequent combat between th SAS and the Taliban in enough detail to give the reader a real sense of what it must be like to be a trooper high in the Afghan mountains exchanging rifle Fire with the terrorists. I really enjoy Leather’ s novels and stories and I am especially glad he chose my husband “Spider”as one of his hero characters. Thanks for your time and feedback.

⭐ FRIENDLY FIRE by Stephen Leather is a short story prequel to his Dan “Spider” Shepherd series. It’s brief enough to be read in its entirety over a lunch-hour and establishes three elements to the continuing Spider saga:1. The existence of a flesh-and-blood Mrs. Spider Shepherd, or at least one whose voice can be heard over a satphone; his son Liam didn’t come from a test tube.2. Spider’s bona fides as a Special Air Service sniper.3. Spider’s dislike of American special forces units. Here, it’s the Army’s Delta Force. Later, in the full-length False Friends , it will prove to be the Navy’s Seals. For Dan, the U.S./U.K. “special relationship” apparently doesn’t stand for much.Author Lee Child has tried to do somewhat the same with his Jack Reacher series, i.e. create a backstory (while generating some pocket money); the silly Second Son (Kindle Single) comes to mind. Happily, FRIENDLY FIRE is a bit more successful at it though, as a stand-alone piece, it’s not really much more than a trailer for the big show. Spider’s fans will not have cause for major dissatisfaction.

⭐ All of the Spider Shepherd short stories are full of action & give the reader an insight on what the SAS have to contend with.

⭐ I’ve read all the Dan (Spider) Shepherd series and look forward to a new one. I’ve been glued to my Kindle for the last month! 5 big stars for this series

⭐ I enjoyed this book very much. I have just one complaint. I am not used to short stories by Stephen Leather. It ended far too soon.

⭐ It’s a fine background, quick read, but for a $ I’m satisfied. It stays in the general style of the other books.

⭐ Stephen Leather and short stories shouldn’t be allowed. I wanted more……cant wait to read his new book once the price goes down on Amazon….

⭐ no enough substance and finished with no particular conclusion. Its a bit like the author losy his way! Not my recommendation

⭐ Another great short story by Stephen Leather. Dont miss out on the entire Spider series, look at the books by Stephen Leather on the Amazon link, they are definitely a great read

⭐ This short story took me about 50 minutes to read and will provide an excellent introductory taster for readers who haven’t yet discovered the thrill of reading Stephen Leather’s Dan (Spider) Shepherd series. For those aficionados who are already addicted to Dan’s adventures, it’s a pleasant top up while waiting for the next in series to be released. The tale is set during Spider’s time in the SAS and the mission takes him out to Afghanistan. As always, this is well written, topical and well researched. The character of Dan Shepherd is well rounded so fits as well into this short story as he does into the full length novels.Highly recommended!
