Description

Now a Netflix movie directed by Mike Flanagan (Oculus, Hush) and starring Carla Gugino and Bruce Greenwood. Master storyteller Stephen King presents this classic, terrifying #1 New York Times bestseller. When a game of seduction between a husband and wife ends in death, the nightmare has only begun…“And now the voice which spoke belonged to no one but herself. Oh my God, it said. Oh my God, I am all alone out here. I am all alone.” Once again, Jessie Burlingame has been talked into submitting to her husband Gerald’s kinky sex games—something that she’s frankly had enough of, and they never held much charm for her to begin with. So much for a “romantic getaway” at their secluded summer home. After Jessie is handcuffed to the bedposts—and Gerald crosses a line with his wife—the day ends with deadly consequences. Now Jessie is utterly trapped in an isolated lakeside house that has become her prison—and comes face-to-face with her deepest, darkest fears and memories. Her only company is that of the various voices filling her mind…as well as the shadows of nightfall that may conceal an imagined or very real threat right there with her…

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐I love Stephen King’s writing style and have read a great number of his books. I rarely feel anything but an eye roll at what are supposed to be the scary parts of the story, I think primarily because as an atheist I have zero belief in, or fear of, the “supernatural”.But this book wasn’t one of those. This was full of psychological terror. What woman hasn’t feared being held captive in one of myriad ways? It was easy to imagine myself as Jessie. I was also satisfied with the conclusion, which I rarely am with most fiction.

⭐So many stories within the actual story here. Jessie agrees to let her husband handcuff her for his pleasure, if you’re thinking “Fifty Shades” think again this is Stephen King and that takes things to a whole different dimension. What follows is 28 hours of insanity as only Stepen King can conjure. The ending was the only thing that was weak in my opinion.

⭐No supernatural in this one, which makes it more terrifying. The horrors of the living can be far worse than vampires.

⭐Definitely a little bit of a departure from the normal horror being right up front in the book. A total slow burn that’s worth the pay off in the end.

⭐This is a intense story of survival. After a sex game gone wrong, a woman handcuffed to a bed inside a cabin in the middle of nowhere must figure out how to survive. This is from beginning to end a psychological thriller like only King can do.

⭐This is the best book I have ever read. Iam reading it for the fourth time. It holds you captivated the entire book. Each time I read it I find something I have missed. Definitely worth buying.

⭐Exciting story..true of Stephen King. Couldn’t put it down..can’t wait for the movie. I’m sure it v will not be disappointing.

⭐I read this book one other time a long time ago. But I must gave forgotten it or never finished the first time. This book was very good. I loved the ending.

⭐This novel is spooky and is edge of your seat reading! I literally could NOT put this book down. Stephen’s writing style is descriptive and this for me enhances the reading experience. Jessie’s emotions, experiences and voices that she was hearing, felt real to me. Her plight dire and forced confrontation of the past was a gripping read. Many important issues around abuse, feminism, sexism can be explored within this novel at a deeper level. As disturbing as this story was, I loved it, I have bought many more of Stephen’s books now, as I know the movies never do the the books justice!

⭐This is a strange book to review as many will say they love it, and many others will say they hate it.I’d say I fall in the middle of that debate. I was interested in reading this for quite a while, I’m quite the sucker for something that involves characters being trapped in a single location the whole time, but could this work with just one character? The basic premise is that during some bondage time, the main character Jesse being handcuffed to the bed decides she doesn’t want to play Gerald’s Game anymore, when he ignores her, she sees no other option but to kick him off of her. Gerald falls off the bed, splits his head open, has a heart attack, and dies. Jesse is now stranded in this cabin in the middle of nowhere. The story that proceeds is rather interesting, sometimes it hooks you in, and other times it feels like it drags on a little too much. However, you are likely to keep reading because you want to know how it ends, who wouldn’t, right? The ending itself is something I can truly praise for this book (maybe not the very last chapter), unlike the more popular Stephen King books this ending feels like it’s been earned, in the interest of a spoiler-free review I’ll say no more. This is certainly one of the more “grounded” Stephen King books. With some rather cringe worthy horror sections and the genuine feeling of being isolated, it is certainly worth a shot, even with the occasional unnecessary fluff.

⭐While it will never be a favourite of mine, it’s still a good read.King really knows how to set a scene.

⭐I took this book on my holidays to Turkey recently, and I couldn’t put it down, I’m sure I finished it in a day! The story is very frightening, the thing I found disturbing was, unlike some of Stephen King’s stories such as Firestarter or IT, this sort of situation could possibly occur in real life. Seriously, after reading this, whether you are male or female, you will be put off bondage / sex games for life!I feel the story flowed very well generally, however I’m not sure about the serial killer / person with jewellery bag part of the story, this just seemed like a random addition in my opinion and didn’t really need to be in the story? But that’s just my opinion. You can pick this book up second hand for literally pennies, so it’s definitely worth adding to your book collection.Hopefully, they may make a film of this story one day!

⭐I am what King may describe as a ‘Constant Reader’ of his work, and I have to say I would put ‘Gerald’s Game’ as one of his best or one of my favourites. What I love about this book is (and what I love about many of his books) is the characterisation of the main character, Jessie. She becomes vividly real, and is every bit as flawed and as real as one of us. Her tenacity, sense of humour and sense of self is utterly compelling. What I also realise is that King is a subtle master of clues and hints, you question what may happen before it does because of the way he insinuates language and plots, by never being obvious, but by keeping your attention gripped so that you do continue along the dark meandering path that is his novel.I won’t ruin the story by giving too much away, but what I will say is, that this book starts off as what I thought to be a kind of psychological thriller, and that aspect does run its course, however, it is also a horror. Some parts of the story, especially towards the end are very scary; so much so that they lingered with me a long time afterwards… King’s ‘horror’ creation in this story is most definitely that, horrific! As another aside, I would also say that I love the way King writes women. They are tenacious, fiesty and often, much more clever than their male counterparts. I think he may well be a secret feminist. There are also uncomfortable moments in this book, but they have to be there to give the book its edge and not to compromise the sense of reality. King isn’t afraid to be controversial or let his characters veer away from stereotypical ideals and be morally tricky.A fantastic read, thoroughly recommended… If you want a good scare and thrill, read on your own with the lights dimmed after dark 😉
