Description

The classic collection of five deeply resonant and disturbing interconnected stories from #1 New York Times bestselling author Stephen King.Innocence, experience, truth, deceit, loss, and recovery are at the core of these five interconnected, sequential tales—each deeply rooted in the 1960s, and each scarred by the Vietnam War, which continues to cast its shadow over American lives, politics and culture. In Part One, “Low Men in Yellow Coats,” eleven-year-old Bobby Garfield discovers a world of predatory malice in his own neighborhood. He also discovers that adults are sometimes not rescuers but at the heart of the terror. In the title story, a bunch of college kids get hooked on a card game, discover the possibility of protest, and confront their own collective heart of darkness, where laughter may be no more than the thinly disguised cry of the beast. In “Blind Willie” and “Why We’re in Vietnam,” two men who grew up with Bobby in suburban Connecticut try to fill the emptiness of the post-Vietnam era in an America which sometimes seems as hollow—and as haunted—as their own lives. And in “Heavenly Shades of Night Are Falling,” this remarkable book’s denouement, Bobby returns to his hometown where one final secret, the hope of redemption, and his heart’s desire may await him. Full of danger and suspense, full of heart, this spellbinding fiction will take some readers to a place they have never been…and others to a place they have never been able to completely forget. Nearly twenty years after its first publication, Hearts in Atlantis is powerful and astonishingly current. “You will see Stephen King in a new light. Read this moving, heartfelt tragedy and weep—weep for our lost conscience.” —BookPage

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐Contrary to my title, and yes, after finishing the last page, I suddenly began to cry, I loved this book 100%. After part one (which I also loved) the remainder of the book was like a trip back in time for me. A trip back to the 60’s, a reminder of all the kids I grew up with, the number of boys from that group, who went to Vietnam and never came back. It also caused me to think of those I knew who did return, and were never the same. Today thinking back, I can’t recall any one of those boys who are still alive. My teenage boyfriend was one of a few others who died of alcoholism by 40,50. Others died from drug overdoses: some within ten yrs of returning, others later.I think my tears were for them all. And for my generation, that I call “The last innocent Generation”. Anyway, this is a must read for anyone, but particularly for those who were heading for adulthood in the 1960’s, that still remember that brief period in history.

⭐Without a doubt, one of my favorite King novels. It really combines all of what he does best: realistic characters and heartfelt moments, the mundane supernatural, and bitter reality of nostalgia. It’s also unlike any of his other stories because it has much more of a conscious social heart than he puts on in the other novels of his I read. All of his books are political in form, but this is the first that directly addresses issues. Also, I am always excited to see throwbacks to the Dark Tower in there. This was supposed to be part of spooky month after reading _Skeleton Crew_ but this is more “sad that your dreams don’t match up to your expectations” vibes. #bookstagram #spookymonth

⭐Saw just a few scenes from the movie of the same name starring Anthony Hopkins & had to read the book before watching the movie! Having never read a Stephen King book thought I might have bitten off more than I could chew when I realized it was 674 pages!! This was a very enthralling book that takes you on a wild ride from the 60’s to the late 90’s with Amazing detail & precision painting a picture with almost every page!!! Typically read 1 self help book (250 pages), 1 Fiction book (500 pages) & 1 non-fiction book (350 pages) a week, but now I’ll be adding at least 1 Stephen King book to my fiction rotation each month!!!!

⭐After more then 20 years without reading a king book. I read this because i saw the movie. The first king book i read was firestarter. I was 13 years old. I always wondered where mr. King gets his ideas. He claims he doesnt know. I fell in love with the characters in this book. I love the symbolism of the baseball glove. I think it means we catch diffirent people in our lives. Or other people catch us. I know mr. King never seems to fail me with his amazing books. I will be reading more from mr. King. And be influenced by what he has to say. I loved every bit of this book.

⭐As the headline states, I’m not really sure what to think of this novel. I want to say I disliked it. The beginning was great. The lowmen made things interesting. Then the threat of danger went away, the story shifts perspectives (4 times), and I’m waiting on the monsters to return. They never do. One person connects the differing perspectives. Genius, I suppose. Very well-written as all Stephen King’s works are. I think something great took place here, but as much as it pains me to say, it must’ve went over my head. Just in case that is what happened, I gave this book four stars. However, I was confused most of the time, bored out of my mind, and waiting on the end. I enjoyed it two stars worth.

⭐Stephen King has done it again. Wow I think it’s the best yet. How does he keep getting better with each book?

⭐I have loved every Stephen King novel that I have read – but this is by far the best. Not just a fantastic story – or group of five stories that are cleverly linked together through the years – but probably the most powerful sociopolitical comment on war, the abuse of authority, and American society’s downward spiral into acceptance of bad things, simply because it takes less effort to choose to do nothing.I have never been really big on (a) Vietnam stories – an overused theme, usually written up in a trite way – or (b) novels with a blatantly anti-war message – again, in most cases cliched and clumsily written. This book is the exception that proves the rule. King’s very human narrative makes the reader feel the horror of the battlefield that affects every part of life for those who have experienced it. Even the first book – Low Men in Yellow Coats – is a prelude to the rest of the novel, when it speaks of power and its misuse in relationships of all types: Bobby and his mother; Carol and the school bullies; the town of Harwich and its hopeless, failing residents; Bobby’s mother and her perverted employer; right down to Ted and the Low Men, who really represent the type of “low” thought and behavior that all of us can find all too easy to accept or fall into, rather than taking a stand for good.I cannot recommend this book highly enough. Though the book is set in the era of the Vietnam war and the years immediately before and after it, the message is relevant to all times throughout history and into the future.

⭐Quite possibly the most amazing book I’ve ever read, and I really can’t say why. There is something incredible about it that I can’t quite wrap my brain around. I haven’t been this drawn into a book since I was a kid, and maybe that same childlike wonder is what resonated with me while I read this. Read it, and see for yourself. You won’t regret it.

⭐The book is split into two timelines if you like, the first is when Bobby Garfield is an 11 year old kid, a bit miserable but ok with his lot. When he gets a new neighbour, Ted Brautigan, things change for him. His mother, a very unlikable character although I did feel sorry for her for a wee bit, judges Ted quickly although happy to let her dislike slide when she needs a babysitter, honestly not a fan of that woman, at all! Anyway Bobby goes through a lot in a short space of time, love of books, realization of his mothers character, first attration/kiss, first heroic action and a glimpse of some of the horrors out there. The other parts of the book split into short stories looking at characters who were in Bobby’s childhood, college, addition, post war and then bringing them full circle to Bobby coming home. The book has nods to some of the happenings in other King’s books and I always find that genius considering how many he has written and managed to intertwine or just brief inclusion/reference. If I am honest the men in yellow coats, first story, was my fave of the lot, the others were ok and it isn’t until you get to the end you get the others, well that was how it was for me.I read this years ago and re read it because I actually remembered very little of it, I think I will watch the movie too and see how that fares. 3/5 for me this time, I love King, he introduced me to reading and horror as a kid, I have keepers of most of his books and some still to read. This isn’t a keeper, nor one of my faves but I am glad I read it.

⭐Any story that goes into The Dark Tower saga is fine with me. Little off shoots from the ST universe just pass out the whole thing and I love it. I don’t want to give too much away so I’ll just say…read it!

⭐I love this books so much. I have even got my partner reading it this very moment. The stories and the progression of them is great. I love how the characters we see as kids and go fond of and then as they grow older and we hear about theor individual paths, we still have that connection even if at times their actions are the complete wrong decisions. Great book. And if you haven’t ever read it. You darn well should! 🙂

⭐This book has library stickers inside but I managed to rip them off. It also came in a plastic pocket but it was removable and not contact plastic. The spine was damaged and the book looked like it was old and much read. But it was fine, just not in a great condition.

⭐King paints pictures with words, his characters come alive whether they be heroes or villains. This book telling the story in 5 parts of a group of kids through to middle age in America during and after Vietnam is well worth a read. King’s description of life in the Vietnam jungle is particularly graphic. Only a short section but a reminder of those scenes of horror shown on TV at that time. There is a nod to time travel and to the underbelly of society, to the scammers and to some very ordinary people trying to make the best of their lives.
