Description
Welcome to Guards! Guards!, the eighth book in Terry Pratchett’s legendary Discworld series.Long believed extinct, a superb specimen of draco nobilis (“noble dragon” for those who don’t understand italics) has appeared in Discworld’s greatest city. Not only does this unwelcome visitor have a nasty habit of charbroiling everything in its path, in rather short order it is crowned King (it is a noble dragon, after all…). How did it get there? How is the Unique and Supreme Lodge of the Elucidated Brethren of the Ebon Night involved? Can the Ankh-Morpork City Watch restore order – and the Patrician of Ankh-Morpork to power?Magic, mayhem, and a marauding dragon…who could ask for anything more?
User’s Reviews
Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐Of all Terry Pratchett’s fantasy-satire Discworld novels, I think “Guards! Guards!” is the best. I always recommend it to first-time Pratchett readers, and they’re never disappointed. The book introduces the reader to the great, dirty city of Ankh-Morpork and its many denizens who have come under the threat of a tyrannical fire-breathing dragon. How did it get there? What does it want? Who’s going to fight it? The answer is never what you’d suspect! Everything – the humor, the pacing, the characters, the story and its biting satire – all come together brilliantly. The only other titles that come close to this one are probably Reaper Man, Going Postal, The Truth, Wee Free Men, Hogfather, and Thud. I think Sir Pratchett really hit the nail on the head with this one. It is so entertaining and so thoughtful… if you want to get into Pratchett, start here, and if you’re already a Pratchett fan, don’t miss this one!
⭐It is Anhk-Morpork and things are amiss as usual. A motley crew of manipulated misfits is meeting in secret to summon a dragon as part of a secret plot to overthrow the Patrician and install a puppet king. The Watch begins to watch, perhaps they have been joined by Carrot a 6’6” orphan raised by dwarves. Carrot embodies great naiveté with enthusiasm to do a good job and enforce the law. A novel concept for the Watch. And then there is Errol the swamp dragon! No aspect of the story is immune from Terry Pratchett’s wry wit from two very funny pages of bumbling around through recitations of silly complicated passwords to the Patrician in his dungeon and finally to the 1 million to one odds of success of the Watch. Reliable entertainment, but there are no witches and no wee free men.
⭐Okay, so this is the best dragon book ever. For adults. Well, for those of us who think we are adults, who hope we are adults, but are really little kids in adult suits. I thought all the previous Discworld novels were funny. I was so wrong. This book left me in fits of giggles. At times I laughed so hard that I couldn’t laugh anymore and just whimpered, and almost peed my pants once. Okay, twice. Okay, I don’t remember how many times. Anyway. People told me that one of their favorites in the Discworld series is Guards! Guards! I get why. I mean, I haven’t read the rest of them, but here Terry outdid himself. Every sentence is a pun, a joke, a clever satire, a poke at everything under the sky, marriage, religion, stupidity, politics, love, cowardice, you name it, he’s got it all. Of course the dedication to the book alone will leave you struggling for breath. Haven’t we all seen those movies with those unnamed men rushing at the hero, only to be butchered to smithereens? Yeah. You know what I’m talking about. Enter secret societies, ruthless rulers, or, rather, loathsome men willing to become ruthless rulers, kings, kings, dragons, heirs to the throne, did I mention dragons? Yes, dragons, swamp dragons, dwarfs, big ladies (I will leave it here, because in the big ladies lies the secret of this book). But I’m rambling. Mind you, my stomach still hurts from laughing, so I’m a little jerky writing this. As to the actual story, because every proper review should do this.Let’s see here. We start with a secret brotherhood doing something strange and mysterious… wait, no, before that we start with dragons dwelling in a mysterious place, and then a strange happening in the library, where, as you remember, an orangutan is a librarian. So, some plot is unfolding in the midst of the brotherhood, of course, as you might have guessed, to overthrow the Patrician of Ankh-Morpork and, well, everything that goes with it. But then, of course, everything goes wrong. Because there are still noble and honest men, like the men of the City Watch, especially the young recruit by the name of Carrot who was adopted by dwarfs but is actually twice their size and who has memorized the book of law of the city and is putting it to practice. You can imagine what that would cause in the city that is home to a Guild of Thieves, and Guild of Assassins, and stuff. Enter love. There is lots of awkward and hysterical love here, the details of which I can’t disclose because I would spoil the book for you (it kept me guessing almost to the very end, which is rare, because I’m usually very shrewd.) There are also very important things like a tea kettle that gets eaten, and rats that understand English, and maidens chained to a rock, and lots of courage and pride and folk wisdom. That last one gave me stomach aches, one of those painful fits of laughter when you double down and lose all hope of ever standing upright. I think I need to cut writing this review, because you need to cut reading it and start reading Guards! Guards! as I can’t possibly do it justice. Don’t forget a pack of tissues. You’ll need it.
⭐It’s clear, it’s solid, it’s sturdy, it’s got a built in bookmark that isn’t fraying. If you’re looking for sturdy copies you can read over and over again, this edition is for you. This is the one that first introduces the Night Watch. The real Night Watch. And the rocket propelled dragon. It slides into place as firmly as it’s cast; solid, well rounded, less than glamorous, but living people, doing what they can.
⭐I love this edition of the book. The foil work on the front cover is beautiful and shiny and the book itself is great quality with a thin bookmark ribbon sewn in. Very impressive!
⭐This is the book the majority of people recommend as the first Terry Pratchett novel to read and now I understand why. It was the most all-around story put together so far and still carried more than enough of the humor he’s known for. It was fun to see the story from the city town guard’s point of view who I normally just find to be an annoyance in most of the games that I play.
⭐Such wonderful dialogue and thought provoking insights. Mr. Pratchett is a keen observer of his world and his humor captures us within his words in ways that caused me to burst out laughing and quietly contemplate. I would recommend this read to fans of witty and insightful writing.
⭐3 o’clock and all’s well!I loved every bit of it. I want to take fighting lessons from Nobby. “Nobby had heard about fighting fair and not kicking an opponent when he was down and then he gave some serious thought to what that meant to someone 4 feet high with the muscle tone of an elastic band.””People who are 6 and half feet tall and nearly as board at the shoulders carrying swords frequently had very boring journeys. People tended to jump out from behind rocks and say ‘Oh I’m sorry I thought you were someone else.'”I paraphrased the above but still just SUCH a good book. Now I’m going to go read the rest.
⭐I love STP books. I have done for about 18 years.I bought this one for my bro to introduce him to discworld, this is where the fun starts. The earlier ones are a bit clunky. He’s been drip reading it for months. But he does send me a quote now and then that made him laugh. Another one converted. Albeit at the pace of brexit.
⭐This was the first Discworld novel I ever read… under strong recommendation from my brother whom speaks very highly of Terry Pratchett and he was an author I just never got round to reading…. however over the Christmas relaxation period I found I had some free time… I finally picked up a copy of the book and read it… and it was fantastic…. I now understand where my brother was coming from. Also… I’m going back now to read the books in chronological order. If you’re reading this as a Terry Prachett fan then this review is pointless for you… but if you’re on the fence and looking for a good place to start… I found this book a very good introduction to the Discworld universe!RIP Terry Prachett!
⭐Terry Pratchett’s ‘Guards, Guards’ was originally published in 1989 and is Book 8 of The Discworld series and Book 1 of the Ankh-Morpork City Watch series.I had originally read its paperback edition years ago and welcomed this opportunity to reread. I again complemented my reading with its unabridged audiobook narrated by Nigel Planer.A young man named Carrot arrives in Ann-Morpork. He had only recently been told that he is actually a human rather than a dwarf. The king of the dwarves had written to the ruler of the City and secured a position for him in the City Watch. Carrot is assigned to the Night Watch led by Captain Sam Vimes. The Night Watch are a ramshackle group and the source of much comedy. It turns out that insurrection is in the air as a secret brotherhood is plotting to overthrow the Patrician and replace him with a puppet king. They have found the key to a dormant, lethal weapon that even they don’t fully understand. The plan is to unleash a campaign of terror on the city. With this reread I can appreciate why ‘Guards, Guards’ has become such a favourite with Pratchett’s readers. It also marks the point where Pratchett began incorporating elements of political satire alongside his broad comic fantasy. It was a great read and it has dragons. Lovely dragons including plucky little Errol.
⭐Don’t get me wrong – I love this book – it’s an amazing story and I love the world it creates. This is why I bought the audiobook so I could listen to it with my wife as an easy listener on a long drive. But it just doesn’t work as an Audiobook for me. There is far too much back and forth dialogue with diverse characters, leading to those unaware of the discworld universe being quite confused and mainly uninterested.Tony Robinson does a great job for the most part but his characterisations of the voices actually make listening to this pretty tough as unless you have an amazing speaker system in the car some are extremely (too) loud and others are super quiet. I get it. He’s an actor. Good on him. However I feel that a more straight reading would have helped to stop people unfamiliar with the story from getting quite so lost!So all in all I wouldn’t buy another discworld novel on audiobook. But shall continue to collect all the books for those times when I want an easy read!
⭐I heard it on the radio & wanted to read it, because the audio versions are always adapted. Really enjoyed it, got through it in a day which is always a good sign. Definitely one of his best, but whilst i do enjoy discworld books, I’m not the biggest fan – hence not reading them at the time. I find it hard to adapt to funny fantasy, probably my age, but as i get older my reading is widening, and i did enjoy this very much.
