Description

Laurel Thorpe, Belinda Rowe, and Scarlett Oliver share only two things; a love for the man they all married, Deacon Thorpe–a celebrity chef with an insatiable appetite for life–and a passionate dislike of one another. All three are remarkable, spirited women, but they couldn’t be more different. Laurel: Deacon’s high school sweetheart and an effortlessly beautiful social worker; Belinda: a high-maintenance Hollywood diva; and Scarlett: a sexy southern belle floating by on her family money and her fabulous looks. They’ve established a delicate understanding over the years–they avoid each other at all costs.

But their fragile detente threatens to come crashing down after Deacon’s tragic death on his favorite place on earth: a ramshackle Nantucket summer cottage. Deacon’s final wish was for his makeshift family to assemble on his beloved Nantucket to say good-bye. Begrudgingly, Laurel, Belinda, and Scarlett gather on the island as once again, as in each of their marriages, they’re left to pick up Deacon’s mess. Now they’re trapped in the crowded cottage where they all made their own memories–a house that they now share in more ways than one–along with the children they raised with Deacon, and his best friend. Laurel, Belinda, and Scarlett each had an unbreakable bond with Deacon–and they all have secrets to hide.

Before the weekend is over, there are enough accusations, lies, tears, and drama to turn even the best of friends–let alone three women who married the same man–into adversaries. As his unlikely family says good-bye to the man who brought them together–for better or worse–will they be able to put aside their differences long enough to raise a glass in Deacon’s honor?

⭐ Everyone cheats seem to be the moral of this story. Although, we also have grief, anger, pettiness, forgiveness, and closure. Here’s to Us is the story of three women who have all loved one man. Deacon Thorpe has died at the age of 53. He was a famous chef celebrity who was a great father but a terrible husband.Let’s talk about his three wives and their children:Wife #1: Laurel. Laurel was his first wife. She meet Deacon when they were in high school. She fell for him and his loneliness. She thought she could make him happy and for a while they were happy. They have one son together, Hayes. Hayes is currently hooked on heroin but no one knows it.Wife #2: Belinda Rowe. Belinda is a famous Hollywood actress. One look at Deacon and she wants him. She’s a lonely person too and she can recognize it in him as well. After getting married, Belinda tried to get pregnant to no avail. They share one adopted daughter, Angie. Angie’s currently dating a married man. She was also the child who spent more time with Deacon since she’s also a chef and she worked at Deacon’s restaurant.Wife #3: Scarlett Oliver. Scarlett was a fresh debutante from the south when she met Deacon. Scarlett was Angie’s nanny (yes, a horrible cliche) and she wanted Deacon while he was married to Belinda. They shared a daughter, Ellery Thorpe who’s still a kid.Now that Deacon is dead, his best friend, Buck will meet all the wives at the home that at some point they all shared with Deacon, American Paradise on Hoicks Hollow Road in Nantucket Island. As you can imagine, the wives don’t get along and all three under the same roof can mean nothing but trouble. To make matters worse, Deacon was in trouble financially and in a few days, they will lose the house that meant so much to him – and surprisingly to them too.The death of Deacon forces the women to spend time together. They will try to stay civil with each other. However, old resentments are brought back to life and secrets always find a way to surface in the worst possible way.My favorite character was Laurel. She was the nicest wife. She had always loved Deacon. She had been there when he needed someone by his side. Belinda had a lot of issues. She was an unhappy woman but she cared for her adoptive daughter Angie although she had a terrible way of showing it. I couldn’t warm up to Scarlett. She was self-centered, deceitful and superfluous. Now to the things that bothered me.I thought Laurel had more sense than to settle for Buck. Just because she was getting older, didn’t mean that she needed to be with Buck. What Buck let Belinda do was not a small thing. I for one didn’t agree with Laurel letting him get away with it, no matter that he could wear a pink shirt with whales on his shorts.Like father like daughter. Angie spent her time complaining about her mother, Belinda, and her shortcomings but she wasn’t any better. She was currently sleeping with Joel, a married man.Don’t get me started on Hayes. He loved his heroine and spent all his time high as a kite. He was present in body only. Here’s to Us is an emotional story that made an impact. Despite having issues with some of the characters as a whole, I really enjoyed this story. I love how Elin finished this book. I thought it was a great way to end it.Cliffhanger: No4/5 Fangs

⭐ I always look forward to a summer book by Hilderbrand, but I was a bit disappointed by this one. Too many characters made the story choppy and disjointed. Jumping back and forth from perspectives and time periods added to the confusion. The most interesting character, Deacon, is only revealed through others and an occasional aside that couldn’t advance the story any other way. 3 wives, 3 kids, various ancillary characters give the feeling that the author wanted to throw everything in there including the kitchen sink. I do agree with her that outdoor showers in the summer are heaven-so there’s that.

⭐ As are most of Hildebrand’s novels, Here’s to Us is set in Nantucket. In thus novel, a family gathers to say goodbye to the family patriarch and to learn what secrets his will holds. Beautifully told with lots of food throughout, it’s a great novel to get lost in.

⭐ Normally, I can caught up in Elin Hildebrand’s books by the third page! That was not the case with HERE’ S TO US. It took.me weeks to finish this one. I didn’t like the plot because there were too many characters to keep track of with too many sub plots. At times it didn’t seem like Hilderbrand was actually the author.Toward the end, I just skimmed the pages in order to get through it faster. A condensed version would have been better to my liking. A big disappointment, as far as I’m concerned and not up to par.

⭐ I’m so disappointed. Her other books were so good! I was bored to tears. Half way through and it still reads like the ramp up, to what the story is going to be about. Nothing of interest happens. I could care less about any of the many, many characters by then. Secretly I found myself wishing for a hurricane, or anything to bring some interest to the blah characters. All the characters felt like cardboard cut-outs. There was great potential with the story line, but little promise to keep me reading.

⭐ Living the life on Nantucket. I wasn’t sure I was going to like this story line, in the middle of the novel I thought maybe 4 stars. But the ending left me feeling so uplifted I give it five. Deacon was a flawed man with monsters taunting him daily. But he was so full of love & such a great father. He couldn’t get out of his own way, but he instilled love & compassion in his children, friends & fans. This is a great beach read!

⭐ I love Elon Hilderbrand’s books. I read the description and thought, “this sounds kind of crazy”. Three wives all together because of a dead husband. I just didn’t think it would be that good. I bought it anyways because I’m a die hard fan and thought I’ll read it at some point. Well here I finally read it and and did so in four days. I couldn’t put it down.As usual, what an amazing read! Although I’m always left wanting a bit more at the end of her books I also feel settled in my heart that the characters live on. Again, Beautifully Done!!!

⭐ This was one of the worst books I think I have ever read! All but one of the characters were total losers. Home wreckers, adulterers, drug addicts, and spoiled self serving people abound. Don’t waste your time. I gave it one star simply because I couldn’t give it only half a star. Just horrible.

⭐ I very rarely write book reviews because I read a lot, and purely for escapism. No heavy reading for me and that right there is the reason this book even got one star. There was no heavy reading. But there was a lot of repetition and predictability. It was the least enjoyable book I have read in years. Typically I would delete from from Kindle and move on, but having read Hildebrand before, I thought I would soldier on. I actually am disappointed in myself that I read it.

⭐ I received my first Hildebrand book as a gift. This is not normally what I read. However, I have enjoyed the several that I have read and actually got a friend to read them as well. Here’s to Us was a great story, but you have to take the time to get to know each character. The book comes together beautifully.
