    Description

This book is the culmination of more than three decades of meticulous historiographic research on Nazi Germany by one of the period’s most distinguished historians. The volume brings together the most important and influential aspects of Ian Kershaw’s research on the Holocaust for the first time. The writings are arranged in three sections―Hitler and the Final Solution, popular opinion and the Jews in Nazi Germany, and the Final Solution in historiography―and Kershaw provides an introduction and a closing section on the uniqueness of Nazism.Kershaw was a founding historian of the social history of the Third Reich, and he has throughout his career conducted pioneering research on the societal causes and consequences of Nazi policy. His work has brought much to light concerning the ways in which the attitudes of the German populace shaped and did not shape Nazi policy. This volume presents a comprehensive, multifaceted picture both of the destructive dynamic of the Nazi leadership and of the attitudes and behavior of ordinary Germans as the persecution of the Jews spiraled into total genocide.

    User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐The information and perspective are detailed and well researched. But the writing can be difficult to follow at times. The author clearly understands the issues in depth, and the discussions are informative. It’s just not an easy read.

⭐This is really the first book that I have come across that trys to help people understand World War 2 Germany in more depth and detail. It wasn’t just about Adolph Hitler and the fate of the Jewish people (and who was to blame for their exterminations). A must read for anyone interested in trying to make some sense out of such tragedy. This book is an intense read. I feel that the author’s sentences were frequently too long. It was challenging to be able to remember the subject of the sentence by the time I reached the end of it. It had a number of German words in it (mostly with an English translation right next to it). It became a bit bothersome to me after awhile. Nevertheless, I read the entire book and the time was well worth it. It has opened my mind to possibilities I had not thought of before regarding Germany and World War 2. Hitler and the Jewish people are but two pieces of the puzzle. Read this book! Study other pieces of this puzzle to get sight of what really happened.

⭐Only really used excerpts for class, so I probably owe it a full examination. It’s Kershaw, though, so it’s bound to be excellent.

⭐A very well writen review of the final days of the third reich (from the failed assesination attempt to the final fall). Ian Kershaw reviews the most turbulent and violent period of the Third Reich and provides a detailed insight of the complex forces that enable the German state to continue the war longer than anyone could reasonably expect. As every Kershaw book it is extremely well documented.

⭐Kershaw could have presented his case once instead of repeating it over and over again throughout the book. If you don’t get his philosophy by the end of the book then you have a real problem. I liked what he had to say but I probably should have put the book down after I got the message instead of reading it from cover to cover. I guess I thought I might miss something but I didn’t.

⭐Unfailingly interesting and solid essays on the profound question that has troubled and will always trouble historians of World War II period in Europe, namely how could Germany have succumbed to the evil enchantment of Hitler and the Nazis? And, could it happen here? Highly recommended.

⭐A comprehensive description of how it could happen to the Jewish people in Europe during WW2 and a lesson and warning for them how to prevent it in the future.

⭐This book is amust read for any student of twentieth century European history

⭐Having loved Ian Kershaws many Nazi books I found this sadly boring – You really need to be deep into a study or university course to enjoy this book. Not what I expected at all just a collection of rather long winded essays with no real historical substance imo.

⭐This book is really a series of essays about various aspects of the holocaust. It is a book by an acknowledged expert but it is not a particularly readable account.

⭐Professor Kershaw writes eloquently about the period of history we would prefer to forget but would be fools to do so. This is a telling lesson of what humans can really do if pushed to the limit of their comfort zone and beyond.

⭐Arrived exactly as described and on time. Completely satisfied.

⭐having read ian Kershaws 2 Hitler volumes,i was disapointed with this.i found the style too deep and whilst the subject matter deserves gravitas,i found it difficult to get in to the book
