Description

A companion to Kody Keplinger’s debut novel, THE DUFF!Sonny Ardmore is an excellent liar. She lies about her dad being in prison. She lies about her mom kicking her out. And she lies about sneaking into her best friend’s house every night because she has nowhere else to go. Amy Rush might be the only person Sonny shares everything with — secrets, clothes, even a nemesis named Ryder Cross. Ryder’s the new kid at Hamilton High and everything Sonny and Amy can’t stand — a prep-school snob. But Ryder has a weakness: Amy. So when Ryder emails Amy asking her out, the friends see it as a prank opportunity not to be missed. But without meaning to, Sonny ends up talking to Ryder all night online. And to her horror, she realizes that she might actually like him. Only there’s one small catch: He thinks he’s been talking to Amy. So Sonny comes up with an elaborate scheme to help Ryder realize that she’s the girl he’s really wanted all along. Can Sonny lie her way to the truth, or will all her lies end up costing her both Ryder and Amy?

User’s Reviews

Editorial Reviews: From School Library Journal Gr 9 Up—Set at Hamilton High like Keplinger’s previous works, this novel features Sonny Ardmore, a habitual liar who makes up outrageous stories to cover for her dismal family situation. Her father is in prison, and her mother is never around. Sonny and Amy Rush—younger sister of Wes from The Duff (Little, Brown, 2010)—are close friends, and Sonny even moves unofficially into Amy’s house. When arrogant prep-school new boy Ryder gets a crush on Amy and emails her asking for a date, Sonny inadvertently strings him along online, typing outrageous responses while pretending to be Amy. Eventually Sonny begins to talk about serious concerns with Ryder and realizes that she actually likes him. The protagonist, who is accustomed to lying her way out of everything, concocts a ridiculous plot in which sweet-natured Amy pretends to be completely irrational, thereby smoothing the way for Ryder to fall for Sonny instead. Unsurprisingly, the teen’s deceptions catch up with her. Sonny is a realistic and very human character, and even though she is a liar, her motivations are all too believable. One of the strong points of the book is the emphasis on female friendship; Sonny’s relationship with Amy is just as, if not more, important than her budding romance with Ryder. This will appeal to readers who enjoyed Sarah Dessen’s Lock and Key (Viking, 2008) and are on the lookout for titles with a feminist bent. VERDICT A must-purchase for libraries where Keplinger’s other titles have been popular.—Kathleen E. I, Sonny Elizabeth Ardmore, do hereby confess that I am an excellent liar. It was never something I aspired to be, but rather a talent that I couldn’t avoid. It started with lies about my homework – I could actually convince teachers that my dog ate it, with fake tears and everything if needed – and then I told lies about my family – my father was an international businessman, not a deadbeat thief who’d been tossed in jail when I was seven – and, eventually, I was lying about everything else, too. But as excellent a liar as I may be, lying hasn’t led me to much excellence lately. So let the record show that this time I am telling the truth. All of it. The whole shebang. Even if it kills me. –This text refers to an alternate kindle_edition edition. Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐I was a fan of the movie, The Duff, before I knew there was a book written. I bought the book and loved it (I might love the book more than the movie) and have re-read The Duff a few times.SPOILERS::When I discovered Lying Out Loud was a companion to The Duff, I had to have it.Ok, so I’m probably older than most (in my 30s) and perhaps I’m out of touch with IMing. It was BIG when I was in middle school, so I have to wonder if IMing is still around? Also, how did Ryder get access to Amy’s IM profile? He’s supposed to be “the new kid” and if Amy wasn’t interested in him, how’d they connect online? Also, Amy had his number… how?! Those were just a few things that bothered me in the book.Another thing: In my opinion, Wesley became “whipped” to Bianca. And I felt like Sonnys narrative was very similar to Biancas voice in The Duff. It was as though Bianca was “speaking” – maybe if the author had given her a different “voice” I wouldn’t have found it so similar to Biancas. It was nice having a little throwback to previous characters, but I wish I hadn’t read Lying Out Loud. The Duff was so good, this book didn’t live up to my expectations.

⭐4 Platypires for Lying Out Loud by Kody KeplingerI am a huge fan of Kody Keplinger and have enjoyed all of her books. So I was pretty excited to get my hands on Lying Out Loud her latest YA novel. No big surprise that I enjoyed this book as well. I really do enjoy Keplinger writing style and her ability to write realistic teen dialogue without looking like she’s talking down to her readers. Plus she has the ability to also connect with her older adult readers by referencing 90s/80s pop culture. The blend makes for a very unique book and kudos for making that happen. While I did enjoy Lying Out Loud it just isn’t my favorite by Keplinger. So far I think that title goes to Duff. While I did like the cameos from the other books in Lying Out Loud. I just wish the characters in this book had more personality. I just thought the male lead Ryder could have been more interesting. He was sorta of bland. BTW I did like that the male lead was a hot person of color. YAY! Wish more books did that and again its a reflection of Keplinger way of connecting with her teen readers.Overall I found Lying Out Loud to be fun interesting read that actually had me laughing and loud but also pulled those emotional heart strings.I would recommend this book for fans of YA.

⭐I really enjoyed this book. There were some minor issues, like the amount of times the author repeated the last name Ryder ‘Cross’, as if I don’t know that character yet. Also, the characters seemed fake at times. The ending really caught me off guard; I didn’t really like it. But the story is really worth your money.

⭐Lying Out Loud is more about friendship than it is about romantic relationship and I loved that. Sonny and Amy are thick and thin BFF’s and there are some issues that pop up that they have to work through and I love that not only does Lying Out Loud showcase a strong friendship but it shows that sometimes you have to work through things to keep that friendship going, it’s not always easy. The ending was so freaking good and perfect in the way that endings should be (not everything is tied up in a bow for the characters), but the rest of the book wasn’t as spectacular. It was still good, but not quite as good as The DUFF. Sonny was quite frustrating at times (girl just tell the truth, ok) and that made it hard to like her (and probably why I didn’t like this as much as The DUFF).

⭐I enjoyed this book more than I thought I would. I actually liked this book more than The Duff. I found myself so involved in Sonny’s life. I cared about the way she was messing up her relationships, I worried about her, my heart ached when it came to her family, my heart soared when something good happened to her. She was, by no means, a perfect character. In fact, Sonny was very, very flawed. However, she had a good heart and she never meant for things to play out they way they did. I loved that Keplinger allowed us to catch back up with Bianca and Wesley. That is one of my favorite things about companion books — that opportunity to see what happened after the story ended. I hope to meet more of the residents of Hamilton

⭐As a follow up to The DUFF, this story was lacking in most every way. The protagonist behaved in a manner consistent with complete abandon and disrespect for everyone around her, which made her a not so sympathetic character. I rolled my eyes one too many times while reading this book for me to rate it with anything more than one star.

⭐A little far fetched, but the characters are engaging and the writing is smart and funny. The characters are imperfect – but lovingly so – their responses are plausible, they have heart. Pleasant afternoon escape – thumbs up.

⭐I was really into the story. It was a nice teenage love story .But then just as I felt a all the angst wrapping up, the story just ended. There was no real closure. Didn’t like that at al. Is this a ploy to get more no st out of a sequel. This first e-book was expensive enough.

⭐After a reread of the Duff, I one clicked a couple other books by this author hoping to enjoy them as much as I did that one.Unfortunately, this one just didn’t do it for me. It wasn’t bad but it wasn’t as good as The Duff… it didn’t have that same feel to it, the laugh out loud moments and the swoon worthy H.For the most part it was an enjoyable book but I just couldn’t seem to click with the characters. I didn’t like Ryder at all, he was far too judgemental and I didn’t feel like he redeemed himself. The ending also seemed to be left quite open and we never did find out about Sonny’s mom.Overall an okay book but not something I would rave about. I have another book by this author to read so I hope ‘Lying Out Loud’ was just a fluke.

⭐Great book.

⭐I enjoyed this book a lot,Its good that it follows on from the ‘Duff’Nice to meet new people, and see old ones in the book.

⭐Thoroughly enjoyed this book. And good to see the characters from The Duff Wesley and Bianca within the series! Recommend!

⭐Very easy read, just like all Keplinger’s other books. A lighthearted book with some really good themes
