Description

The definitive edition of Ayn Rand’s famous play, incorporating the author’s final changes. On one level, Night of January 16th is a totally gripping drama about the rise and destruction of a brilliant and ruthless man. On a deeper level, it is a superb dramatic objectification of Ayn Rand’s vision of human strength and weakness. Since its original Broadway success, it has achieved vast worldwide popularity and acclaim. To the world, he was a startlingly successful international tycoon, head of a vast financial empire. To his beautiful secretary-mistress, he was a god-like hero to be served with her mind, soul and body. To his aristocratic young wife, he was an elemental force of nature to be tamed. To his millionaire father-in-law, he was a giant whose single error could be used to destroy him. What kind of man was Bjorn Faulkner? Only you, the reader, can decide.

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐Having read her novels I wanted to read this play, her one play. But, was not really impressed. Actually, sorely unimpressed. The good thing: This is the play as Rand wants it to be. It’s not the version that debuted on stage, which was drastically changed by the production team against her wishes and didn’t get great reviews. Nor is it later versions changed even more. This is a version that combines a couple versions under Rand’s own guidance. The bad thing: Court room dramas are tough due to not being realistic and hyper-emotional or limited in characterization and those strong characters one finds in her novels are missing here. This is no exception. While the ending might be famous for the audience getting the choice of how they want the trial to come out, the concluding scene is all too brief and anti-climactic. While in the first run of the show audiences almost always chose the same ending, so it’s not really a big philosophical play leaving the audience hanging.I put this up there with reading Hesse’s poetry. Not necessary. For the record I have 25 years in theater and read hundreds of plays of every flavor. This doesn’t stand out from the group. Yet, I love all of Rand’s books.

⭐Ordered two of these as gifts for Christmas. They are as expected and would definitely order these again.

⭐I am playing the role of Karen Andre in this play. Easy to read print. Thank you.

⭐About half of the time the play is performed, the jury from the audience voted for the accused. How would you vote? The case is close enough to be at least questionable, so it says more about the jury than the case. The play engages the audience – and you as the reader. Loved it.

⭐Got this for a play-reading group. Was surprised to enjoy the play. Doesn’t seem to invoke much of Rand’s idealogy. Great edition with her final changes.

⭐Having the audience participate as the jury was very interesting indeed. It has the potential to add different dimensions to each and every performance. The plot was had a familiar theme but was written very well.

⭐This is a book. This is a story. This is a play. This is a book, story and play worth reading again and again. One in which the jury, the reader, I, am on trial.

⭐Read it as a kid… had no idea it was written by Rand.

⭐Excellent
