Description

Now a major motion picture! Stephen King’s #1 New York Times bestseller is a “wild, powerful, disturbing” (The Washington Post Book World) classic about evil that exists far beyond the grave—among King’s most iconic and frightening novels. When Dr. Louis Creed takes a new job and moves his family to the idyllic rural town of Ludlow, Maine, this new beginning seems too good to be true. Despite Ludlow’s tranquility, an undercurrent of danger exists here. Those trucks on the road outside the Creed’s beautiful old home travel by just a little too quickly, for one thing…as is evidenced by the makeshift graveyard in the nearby woods where generations of children have buried their beloved pets. Then there are the warnings to Louis both real and from the depths of his nightmares that he should not venture beyond the borders of this little graveyard where another burial ground lures with seductive promises and ungodly temptations. A blood-chilling truth is hidden there—one more terrifying than death itself, and hideously more powerful. As Louis is about to discover for himself sometimes, dead is better…

⭐I finished this book about a half hour until midnight tonight. I had always loved the movie growing up so my brain conjured up the idea of reading the book. Seemed innocent enough and my sweet little naive mind thought, “how bad can it possibly be?” I read some of the other reviews just to see what I was getting myself into. After some peer research, I felt adequately prepared for the task at hand. As I sit here with all the lights on in my house, Boy Was I Wrong! I have been a little more jumpy and experiencing some pretty bizarre dreams since I began reading but nothing prepared me for the sheer terror I was in store for as I read the last 100 pages or so. By the time I reached the final pages, my hands and feet were ice cold and clammy. I am almost 30 years old and I was terrified to leave my bed to go to the bathroom. I worked up the courage (or my bladder couldn’t take it any more) and embarked on the trek to the bathroom. As I passed my children’s bedroom, my two year old started screaming and crying in her sleep. I am about 99.9% sure that I lost a little piece of my soul (and possibly gained a touch of PTSD) from fright! Overall, this book is great and by far the scariest thing I have ever read. If you have never read it, I highly recommend it!

⭐I don’t typically write reviews about books. I’ve read close to 20 SK books in the last year and a half and over more in my life…this is so unlike his normal character as a writer that it’s unnerving. I’ve read IT, the Stand, ‘Salem’s Lot, Carrie, Dark Tower series 1-7.5(?) – everything chronologically before this book and tons of newer stuff (I’m working back through his catalogue from start to finish). Nothing compares to this. Prepare for the darkest form of horror. I can’t with good conscience recommend anyone to read this book. It gave me nightmares every night that I read it. I woke up thinking about it, and couldn’t get it out of my head. I’m reading something else as fast as I can…can’t wait to get back to the basic SK. Nothing else holds a candle to this.

⭐This was the first full length book I read as a young teenager and I loved the premise of the story and how it dealt with sensitive subject of death, loss, resurrection and playing God. It has such an original idea (of how to deal with a loss of a beloved pet or a child with an Indian burial ground) that I’m surprised more people haven’t tried to rip it off.My review is after seeing the 2019 version of Pet Semetary (which imo incorporates more of the book than the 1989 version) and obviously the 1989 one.My obsession with horror is thanks to Pet Semetary and the master of scary Stephen King. The power of the writing is strong and King obviously knows how to dance with characters who you will love and as the story deepens begin to fear. Take an average every day family with their beloved cat, move them to the country, bring in the friendly neighbor and a crazy road that leads to the kind of power that King makes you believe is possible and very real. The goosebumps, fear and characters are going to make you afraid to walk unknown paths. My favorite part was actually the walk to the burial ground, I felt the water, seen the fog and felt like I was right there with Louis and Jud. It was so well written, I wanted to tell them “let’s go back” because I felt the power that place held and not going to lie for a young teenager that’s scary.Even though I’m not into horror books anymore Pet Sematary holds its place in my heart.

⭐The first time I read this book I was probably twelve or thirteen, fifteen years ago now. Images my imagination conjured at the dreadful instruction of this book back when I was a kid are still vivid in my mind, as if they were a nightmare I had just now awoken from. Rereading as an adult has been an absolute horrifying pleasure. It is just as haunting as I remember. This is not a book for the faint of heart or stomach. I haven’t read much of King’s works, so I don’t know how it compares. I’ve never seen the movie, either. I’ve been reading nothing but horror for the last few months and really loving it, but I think this re-read has put me off the genre for a bit. I think I need a breather after a read of this intensity. One of my favorite non scary parts of the book: he’s got a few pretty great quotes about cats. If you’re a fan of supernatural horror, it is a must read.

⭐I bought pet sematary for my kindle quite a while back but just simply didn’t get around to reading it despite being a huge fan of Stephen King. Then a couple of weeks ago I came across the trailer for the movie that is set to be released later this year and decided it was time to get the book read so I can compare the book and the upcoming movie.Well what a book it is. This is definitely one of Kings most disturbing pieces of work, especially in the second half of the book. In fact the first half, although reasonable, was certainly not a 5 star quality read by any stretch of the imagination. But as with many of Kings masterpieces, you really have to allow him to paint a huge picture of the setting and let him really fully introduce the characters to the point that you really know them personally before he unveils his dark and horrific ideas upon you. Once he does that in this amazing tale it definitely does become a 5 star, disturbing yet brilliant book. One of my favourite by this genius of an author.

⭐I allowed myself back on the King wagon! In all honesty, considering the free-flowing writers I’ve read recently, I found this a bit of a chug, particularly at the beginning, but the pay off is in the second half of the book.As the father of a two year old, this is without doubt the hardest read of this year! Stephen King is the best writer of child characters of any author in history, and he may as well have named the character Leo (my son) rather than Gage for the way it drew me into the action! This is known as Stephen King’s scariest novel, and to some degree I agree with that (length vs pay off/creep-out per page) to a large degree. Unnerving in large parts, and for me, this was an ending that Stephen King got right! A book worthy of the tag “horror”!

⭐I just finished reading this book and I am lost for words. I feel sad. This is not just a horror novel, it’s a tragedy. This to me was not only the scariest, but also the most sickeningly disturbing story I have ever read.I’m a huge fan of King. I didn’t know what to expect from this one. I am familiar with a variety of his work from Christine to IT. Weather it be a possessed car or a scary clown, I knew one thing… Stephen King can make an interesting story out of anything and pull you in with his unique storytelling style that makes you want to come back for more. Despite the disturbing content in this book, man I loved it. I enjoyed reading this book.So what’s this book about? In short, without spoiling it, here it is:A family move in to their new home where they find a path leading to a “Pet Sematary” in the woods where children from the past buried their pets. And then the haunting begins…Sounds simple, doesn’t it? Harmless. Innocent. No, it isn’t. What happens in this story is dark, terrifying, chilling and mad. It also made me sad. Some forces of nature are not be messed with. What made this book even more interesting is that the book takes its time to build the world around the family as we get to know them. We see how they interact with each other and watch how their relationships grow. It feels slow at first, but you will see why later on. The story really kicks off at Part 2 and that’s where the emotional rollercoaster begins. You will feel tense in several places in this book as you progress. It’s an addicitive read. Reading at night, not only did I feel a chill down my spine, it kept me up all night. Stephen King hypnotises you with his story telling to the point where you want more. I couldn’t put it down. This story is not for the fainthearted. This may indeed be the best story Stephen King has ever told. It’s haunting. It’s disturbing. This is King’s darkest tale.

⭐Pet Semetary by Stephen KingFinally, I’ve finished!Overall, the storyline was fantastic and some of Kings descriptions were very eerie. But… BUT I struggled to finish it. It dragged and dragged so much. I feel you could take out all the unnecessary book fluff and still be left with a good sized novel that still made sense. There is a lot of ‘fluff” in this (no, not literally fluff. Just useless information that doesn’t move the story forward. If you cut it out, the story would still make perfect sense.)I’ve never been a huge fan of Kings books. I admire his commitment and a lifetime of failure and success, but his style just doesn’t work with my brain and I end up getting bored very quickly. But, it’s the first of his books I’ve managed to finish (even if I did have to force myself to read the last 100 pages!)I didn’t find this book overly scary. I’ve heard people say this book scares them to death, but for me it was just flat and boring. Sure, some descriptions were creepy. But at no point did I feel scared. (I’ve yet to read a book that makes me scared!)I recommend this book if you like long winded background stories with very few ‘action shots’.Also, Ellie’s name changed to Eileen just once at the end of the book If you’re like me, and prefer constant drama and action and romance, don’t read this.Overall rating: 5/10

⭐Sometimes dead is better. This is a frequently said comment by one of the central characters in this novel about coming to terms with loss. It’s one of the fears that I suppose we all have where we suddenly lose someone close to us, worse if that someone is our small child. In the preface Stephen King explains how a near road accident involving his very young son inspired this book. Yes, I know that fear. The story starts when a family lose their beloved cat to a busy road. Close by is an ancient burial ground where local children made a pet ‘sematary’, complete with a misspelled sign. There are stories of it having the power to resurrect the dead. So of course the protagonist buries the family cat there while his wife and children are away. What harm can it do?The cat returns from the dead but he is not the same. Less feline grace, smellier and with a new ambitious hunting prowess. The family aren’t so keen on the cat anymore. They become quite mean to him as well, especially the protagonist (the husband and father). Let it be noted that I won’t turn against my cat if he becomes less fragrant or graceful. Not impressed with this at all. From cats the focus naturally moves to humans. The themes run throughout the various characters in their ability to accept death and to acknowledge the guilt associated with injury and illness. There are no-go areas when it comes to talking about death, expressed initially when the cat dies and the husband chooses not to tell his wife or children. This leads to him becoming secretive while his wife and her family suppress their guilt concerning a family death no one mentions. There are some tense moments in this book; the #psychological aspects are covered in great depth and understanding, especially the trauma of death, and the gory bits are vividly described. A couple of sections are really quite chilling and there is the hint of the supernatural juxtaposed with the unreliable protagonist as he becomes more unstable. This is well done and convincing. This is a bleak and depressing work of ##dark fiction where the chances of a happy ending are practically nil.Unfortunately there are too many waffly bits that tend to drag on without adding to the overall pace of the story. Pet Sematary would be much better as a novella where the thought provoking tale leaves us wondering what we would do in the same situation. Instead I was wondering when the book would end.
