⭐ This is a nice addition to the series and an enjoyable novella. If you are familiar with and have enjoyed the other books in this series, you will enjoy this short story which is why I gave it 4 stars. Smith developed her characters (Mattie more then Jai but overall, good enough). There was action, an actual story with a lovely ending and not just pages of sex which in my opinion makes for better reading/listening. The narrator did as fine a job with this as she did with the previous 4 books in the Lords of Kassis series. MY objection is for like 1 1/2 hours of reading / listening $14 seems a little steep as does the sale price of $7.49. I can only imagine what goes into making audio books and people need to be paid for their time but for 65 pages it seems a little over priced. It is my fault for not paying attention to the length of the story and I will certainly pay more attention to what I am paying for in the future.If money is not an issue and your enjoyed the other books in the series, this is a nice addition. If you are a little strapped for cash, buy the kindle version for $3.00 (or less if on sale) and enjoy a nice read.

⭐ This was a short story but it was well written. Yes, it has some grammar problem but if you are able to past that, the story captivates you. Jai is a Kassisan working in the engineering department on Manota’s warship. He’s off and decides to go back to his quarters when he sees this beautiful woman running with strange animals. Her skin color is like mocha cream not fair like the other human women that he has met. He feels an instant attraction for her, follows her and kiss her. When pirates attack the ship and someone inside sabotaged it, blowing up some areas, Mattie uses her dogs, that she trained to find bombs, to help the other to find the other bomb that have been set in different parts of engineering. When she thinks that everything is back to normal she goes to find some pets that she has left in the recreational room and 3 pirates find her and take her hostage. Jai finds out and go to rescue her. If you want to know what happens next you have to read the story. Good reading.

⭐ Has anyone noticed that a majority of romances entail a hero who is rich and powerful? Or a heroine who is charming, cute, and surprisingly above average in some way? When was the last time you read a novel where they were just normal? Well this short story has just that. Jai t’Dubar is just a regular Kassisan who works hard and grew up on his family farm, while Mattie Abrams is just a regular human with real fears and insecurities. Besides training bomb sniffing dogs and having an above average talent with animals, she could be as real as you and me. This story takes place within the time frame of Jo’s Journey where we briefly came across Mattie and Jai as they meet for the first time and sparks flew. In Rescuing Mattie, we get to know them more intimately.Choosing to follow her circus family into space, Mattie is still uncertain about her decision to leave Earth. She quickly finds herself at the receiving end of Jai’s attention. Jai knew the moment he spotted Mattie that she was meant for him and he didn’t hesitate to pursue her. At first she was uncertain about his attentions and in fact completely avoided any contact with him. But when pirates board the ship, Mattie and Jai must do what they can to save each other. For once they are on the right track for their happily ever after or so we think.Upon arriving on Kassis, the main bad guy needs to be dealt with and a plan is set in motion to stop his efforts to destroy all that they hold dear. As the fight erupts, Mattie and Jai must do their part in ensure that they also have a happy ending.Pros & Cons:I’m conflicted, I liked this book yet I was also disappointed. I found this book to be unusual in that Mattie is so uncertain about herself, and in comparison to the other females, a coward. This is refreshing as well as disconcerting. She was not very brave, though she did put herself out there when the pirates invaded the ship. But on Kassis she was hiding and regretting her decision having left Earth. It was a bit contradictory and sad considering she had already gotten attached to Jai. However, I also like that she wasn’t like the other females in the book. She seemed more realistic, and really, not ever woman on Earth can be as kick ass as the River, Star or Jo.”Turning, she fell to her knees and crawled across the floor until she could curl up under the cage holding Katarina’s tigers. She whispered to the dogs to come to her. They crawled on their belly’s imitating her until they were up under the covered cage as well. Mattie pulled Chia into her lap and shivered as she listened to the tigers pacing and snarling under the covers concealing them.She covered her ears against the screams and yelling. Images of the males cutting their friend up danced through her mind and she started rocking and humming in an effort to drown out the noise of the fight. She had no idea how long she stayed hidden. It wasn’t until Jo came up and called her name several times that she opened her eyes to stare in terror at the slender blonde.Overall I’m going to say that I liked this book and it was worth reading, but it wasn’t my favorite.”Excerpt“What… are you doing?” Mattie moaned as her head fell back.“Making sure everyone else knows you are taken,” he growled out as he pushed against her.Panic built as fear overwhelmed her. She didn’t know this man. He could just be playing with her. He probably thought she was easy with the way she had been responding to him. Finally, she cried out a sharp command in German to Poppers, the Standard Poodle.“Poppers, beißen seine Hose!” Poppers, bite his pants! Mattie cried out.Poppers rose immediately and grabbed the back of Jai’s pants. The huge warrior let out a sharp yell as the poodle grabbed a little flesh with it. Poppers growled menacingly, refusing to let go.Jai cursed and released Mattie, carefully sliding her down his body even as he gritted his teeth against the pain of having his ass pinched by the sharp teeth of the dog. He glared over his shoulder at the poodle that just growled deeper and jerked her head, causing another curse to escape from his clenched jaw. He turned to look at Mattie, who was pressing her back against the wall, even as she scooted further away from him.“Poppers, release,” Mattie whispered out, never taking her eyes from Jai’s furious face. “I have to go. “Nach Hause gehen, guys.” Go home, guys, Mattie ordered as she turned back the way she came and started running.Jai watched as Mattie and her shaggy companions disappeared around the corner, almost knocking Petre down as he came walking around it. He waited until he could no longer see her before he reached a hand out and rubbed his offended butt cheek. A small chuckle escaped him as he thought that he was going to be carrying her mark for a few days, on his ass. Unfortunately, it wasn’t the mark he was hoping for.“What are you laughing about?” Petre said glumly. “I couldn’t find the female I was looking for and yours looked like she had a dozen Killian mercenaries on her ass.”“Mine just had one of her creatures bite me in the ass to get away from me,” Jai said with a grin.“And you think that is funny why?” Petre asked confused.Jai looked over at his friend. “Because I left my mark on her neck. She is mine, Petre. Let’s go get a drink. You look like you could use one,” Jai said suddenly feeling much better.

⭐ I loved this book! The heroine wasn’t a fighter, but her strength still shown through. You’ll have to read it to see. I choose five stars because it was predictably unpredictable and kept my attention. When I had work to do, I couldn’t wait for a break to get back to the story. It was such a great reading! I have recommended this series to my family and friends.

⭐ I liked it because it fleshed out two background characters we met in the story Jo’s Journey. Although I do have to admit that Ms. Smith should have given Jai and Mattie a longer story. This one felt rushed. Yes, Ms. Smith had to retell parts of Jo’s journey to give the rest of this story more depth. Also, there was more here than what was written in the other story. The only thing I regret is that it sort of felt like a cheat when the epilogue jumped forward two years to finish this story off. Does this mean Risteard’s and Ricki’s story takes place two years after Jo’s and Manota’s book? I don’t think Walter would have waited that long to get his adopted daughter back.

⭐ I wasn’t expecting this novella and it was a pure pleasure to find it. This is a background story to Jo’s Journey, so you should definitely read that first.Mattie is a member of the circus and when the owner says he plans to take the show to the stars, she agrees to go with her “circus” family. During the voyage on the Starship she meets the Kassis warrior Jai just before they are attacked by pirates, Mattie is tough but she’s not a warrior like Jo and her sister’s. But during the attack she uses her dogs to help find explosives that have been planted by a traitor. After they live through that attack Jai and Mattie fall in love. They make plans for their life in Kassis and Mattie is looking forward to joining her life to Jai’s.This is a charming story of the background characters that populate S.E. Smith’s stories, it’s great to get more information and it makes the world building more solid. Great little read!

⭐ A sweet addition to the series of the Lord’s of Kassis. A little novella with a wonderful storyline where Mattie finds happiness in a strange world far from anything she’s known with aliens and never imagined existed. Danger is stalking her friends and circus family while they begin they’re new lives. Mattie literally runs into love on her way to they’re new home amongst the stars. I recommend this whole series as each book draws you into this astonishing world.

⭐ Mattie Abrams has finally found the family she desires, with her friends in the circus, family beyond her pets. When Cirque de Magik decides to take their act into space, becoming the circus of the stars she does not get beyond the spaceship before she is dealing with intergalactic mischief. Luckily she has her animals and her new found mate Jai t’Dubar who believes in forever standing between her and a band of space pirates.Cute short read, you get a lot of action in this one, Mattie and Jai t’Dubar meet, make eyes, and his I must mate imperative kicks in, of course the pirates start making trouble so they are not able to do much about their desire.I have read the other books in the series and you can jump in without reading the rest.The couple did get to know each other while Jai t’Dubar took care of Mattie after the pirate attack so no wham bam thank you m’am, the bam came later.Straight to the Swagger: This is a short story but you still get a sci-fi adventure, action and romance with a heroine who has animals who know how to get you out of a tight spot and a hero who will and can woe you after you have been hurt.

⭐ I love Susan’s long novels but also enjoy reading short stories and novellas, especially when they’re done well. Rescuing is Susan’s second published short story and it is as enjoyable as any of her much longer stories. In less than 70 pages, Mattie and Jai reveal their backgrounds and personalities, meet, fall in love, experience danger more than once, survive, triumph and live happily ever after.Events in Rescuing Mattie closely intertwine with the events of Jo’s Journey, Lords of Kassis book 3. Rescuing Mattie could possibly stand alone but reading both stories and the two proceeding stories, River’s Run and Star’s Storm, increases the involvement and fun.SE Smith is very good at taking secondary characters and creating a desire to see more of them and their story. She is easily frightened and untrusting of the aliens but unable to avoid her feelings of lust/love with Jai.This is a good story and funny as well as serious. Here we revisit the other lords of Kassis and their mates which is terrific especially if you read books 1 and 2.
