Description

Isaac Asmiov’s classic novel about the decline and fall of Solaria. Gladia Delmarre’s homeworld, the Spacer planet Solaria, has been abandoned – by its human population. Countless robots remain there. And when traders from Settler worlds attempt to salvage them, the robots of Solaria turn to killing…in defiance of the Three Laws of Robotics. Pax Robotica Long ago, Gladia’s robots Daneel and Giskard played a vital role in opening the worlds beyond the Solar system to Settlers from Earth. Now the conscience-stricken robots are faced with an even greater challenge. Either the sacred Three Laws of Robotics are in ruins – or a new, superior Law must be established to bring peace to the galaxy. With Madam Gladia and D.G. Baley – the captain of the Settler traders and a descendant of the robots’ friend Elijah Baley – Daneel and Giskard travel to the robot stronghold of Solaria…where they uncover a sinister Spacer plot to destroy Earth itself.

User’s Reviews

Editorial Reviews: From the Publisher THE CLASSIC ROBOT NOVEL About the Author Isaac Asimov, world maestro of science fiction, was born in Russia near Smolensk in 1920 and brought to the United States by his parents three years later. He grew up in Brooklyn where he went to grammar school and at the age of eight lie gained his citizen papers. A remarkable memory helped him finish high school before he was sixteen. He then went on to Columbia University and resolved to become a chemist rather than follow the medical career his father had in mind for him. He graduated in chemistry and after a short spell in the Army he gained his doctorate in 1949 and qualified as an instructor in biochemistry at Boston University School of Medicine where he became Associate Professor in 1955, doing research in nucleic acid. Increasingly, however, the pressures of chemical research conflicted with his aspirations in the literary field, and in 1958 lie retired to full-time authorship while retaining his connection with the University. Asimov’s fantastic career as a science fiction writer began in 1939 with the appearance of a short story, Marooned Off Vesta, in Amazing Stories. Thereafter he becarne a regular contributor to the leading SF magazines of the day including Astounding, Astonishing Stories, Super Science Stories and Galaxy. He won the Hugo Award four times and the Nebula Award once. With nearly five hundred books to his credit and several hundred articles, Asimov’s output was prolific by any standards. Apart from his many world-famous science fiction works, Asimov also wrote highly successful detective mystery stories, a four-volume History of North America, a two-volume Guide to the Bible, a biographical dictionary, encyclopaedias, textbooks and an impressive list of books on many sapects of science, as well as two volumes of autobiography. Isaac Asimov died in 1992 at the age of 72.

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐I have been waiting about 10 years and finally decided I can’t wait any longer. I read few physical books these days but this one is good enough to break down and read in paperback.A great sense of wonder as the characters explore the universe.Finished reading. As enjoyable as the first time back in the late 80s. Looking forward to reading other books in this universe.

⭐More than 200 years have passed since events of Robots of Dawn. Hans Falstofe has recently passed, leaving his arch-enemy, Dr. Amadiro, the main power of the Spacer worlds. Still bent on revenge for his defeat by Earther Elijah Baley and his robot partners Daneel and Giskard, Amadiro and his accomplices seize on a plan that will irradiate the Earth, killing billions, and leaving the Spacer planets free to colonize the rest of the galaxy. Lady Gladia, Elijah’s former love and Settler space trader DG Baley (five generations removed from his patron, Elijah), Daneel and Giskard must puzzle out Amadiro’s plan before it’s too late, and in the process test the boundaries of the Three Laws of Robotics. As many reviewers have previously pointed out, Robot’s and Empire was Asimov’s attempt to fuse his three main Sci-Fi “worlds” (Robots, Empire, Foundation) into one universe. I won’t get into the debate about whether this book was necessary, although it was, for the most part, successful in it’s attempt. The biggest negative to Robots and Empire might be that it is somewhat contrived…that is to say bridging the Robots story arcs and the Empire story arcs requires a certain level of Dues Ex Machina in that the end result has to be one that connects the two story arcs with a minimum of inconsistencies. Anyone who has read the Empire or Foundation series of books – which were all written long before Robots and Empire – knows how Robots and Empire has to end, so that while the conclusion is good (and somewhat emotional), it’s also a known ending.Beyond that, I found Robots and Empire to be a great story overall. Taking place over four worlds (Aurora, Solaria, Baleyworld and Earth), Robots and Empire is a race from the beginning, although the reader doesn’t necessarily know that until the chapters dealing with Amadiro. It also leaves open a few threads for other writers to potentially follow later (as have been done by Mark Tiedemann and Roger Allen), like why the Solarians have vanished. We also get a touching recount of Elijah Baley’s last moment with Daneel and reflections from both Robots and Gladia on their lives after Robots of Dawn. Recommended for any fan of Asimov, but probably important to have read previous Asimov Robots novels first.

⭐I’ve just read 3 of his robot books: I Robot, Robots of Dawn and this one which is my favorite so far. Like how it points the way to the Foundation books.

⭐I have read all 14 books in foundation universe and this is one of the three best in my opinion. Don’t read it if you haven’t read the other robot books first

⭐The cover was more torn than I expected. The book pages are just fine.

⭐Used to fill out my Asimov robot collection

⭐Not quite as good a condition as I would have liked to have. But…it’s fine and doesn’t affect the reading of it. Feel it was slightly overrated condition wise!.

⭐Because it is out of publication in either print or audio format, I overlooked this book even though I’ve read all the other books in the Asimov Foundation and Robot series. I decided to purchase a used book.It takes a leap forward in the Robot series and fills in many gaps in the backstory to the Foundation series and in particular to Foundation and Earth. It felt very satisfying to have it all pulled together. I highly recommend it.

⭐Robots and Empire is the fourth and last novel about robots from the legendary sci-fi author Issac Asimov.(The first book being

⭐Caves of Steel

⭐, the second,

⭐The Naked Sun

⭐and I would also recommend reading

⭐Robot Visions

⭐before the third novel

⭐The Robots of Dawn

⭐as though not necessary some of the short robot stories are referenced in The Robots of Dawn and I found the background knowledge of those made certain story aspects clearer)Robots and Empire is rather different from the previous three books in the series, I am to understand that it leads onto the Empire series which leads onto Asimov’s Foundation series (though I haven’t read them yet) and was written after them which could be the reason why. That’s not to say it’s a bad book, it isn’t, it’s great in fact, but I did find it to be the weaker of the Robot series. This is probably because of the change of protagonist and it jumps around a lot more. The book is set many decades after The Robots of Dawn and Elijah Baley is long dead. His brief love and long living Spacer friend Gladia is still alive and has inherited the universes two most advanced robots, Daneel (Baley’s former partner) and Giskard his inferior looking, though more powerful friend. The earthlings have spread out across the galaxy in this time starting an empire much to the fear and ire of the Spacers who seem locked in a state of stagnation. A small group of Spacers have devised a way to stop earth secretly and it’s up to the robot duo to stop them in the confines of Asimov’s legendary three laws. What I liked about this book was that it took a slight change in focus over his previous books which had always had robots in them, but been about hummanity and their use of robots and their effect on differentiating cultures. Although that is still present, a lot of this book is around Daneel and Giskard questioning the three laws and doing their best to protect hummanity as a whole within their confines as well as Giskard’s quest to create the laws of humanics to understand how humans work. It’s an interesting sub plot based around the edges of Gladia’s new found freedom in traveling and realising though her life is long she has never actually lived, just existed. My final thoughts are like the rest of the series this is a fascinating book that’s clever in all the right ways. If you haven’t read any Asimov before, this is a great series to start (I have every intention of moving onto the Empire series in the future though I may try Roger MacBride Allen’s

⭐Caliban

⭐set in the Asimov universe after his Robot series first.)Highly recommended.+ Clever.+ Change of protagonist gives a fresh perspective.+ Viewpoint on technology and it’s effect on hummanity is facsinating.

⭐Apparently Gladia’s home planet of Solaria has been abandoned. Feeling homesick and missing the long-dead Elijah Baley, she gets caught up in the machinations of Levular Mandamus and her old enemy Dr. Amadiro, machinations which threaten to destroy the Earth and plunge the human race into a war between Settlers and Spacers unless R. Daneel and R. Giskard can avert the catastrophe with the help of D. G. Baley. An interesting and exciting novel, this was Asimov’s last and it ties together two of his earlier series, the Robot series and the Galactic Empire/Foundation series.

⭐So happy to have discovered a series of sequels to books I read in my youth.I enjoy the manner in which he folds in ideas from Foundation series. If you like Caves of Steel then I recommend you give these a look.

⭐Not one of Asimov’s best, he is weak on personal interactions and stories are told as action taking place elsewhere. Needed a lot more science and interesting technical stuff and less chatter. I think. Still I love the author, and collect his book when I find them.

⭐The fourth book and later sequel that followed-on from his ‘Lige Bailey’ trilogy. Azimov can do no wrong for me – he was, and still is, my favourite SF writer of all time – many modern writers borrow from his brilliant ideas!
