Description

From ghost stories to psychological suspense, the complete horror and dark fantasy stories of Rudyard Kipling.Rudyard Kipling, a major figure of English literature, used the full power and intensity of his imagination and his writing ability in his excursions into fantasy. Kipling is considered one of England’s greatest writers, but was born in Bombay. He was educated in England, but returned to India in 1882, where he began writing fantasy and supernatural stories set in his native continent: “The Phantom Rickshaw,” “The Strange Ride of Morrowbie Jukes,” and his most famous horror story, “The Mark of the Beast” (1890). This masterwork collection, edited by Stephen Jones (Britain’s most accomplished and acclaimed anthologist) for the first time collects all of Kipling’s fantastic fiction, ranging from traditional ghostly tales to psychological horror.

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐I am a huge fan of Kipling. Poetry, prose, short story, novella. Doesn’t matter, if he writes it I shall read. With that said, I also love classic horror/macabre/scary short stories and read many. Kipling’s work isn’t scary in a modern way. They almost all have a disturbing scare which I prefer but yet they also touch on things he always touched on, societal hypocrisy his world opinions on others ways of life and lies etc…. it has taught me much because I have had to google a lot of information for stories that are based in India. But even if I don’t understand that story specifically they flow beautifully and clearly stand as a Kipling piece of work. If you like Gunga Din, Mark of the Beast, The man who would be King etc you will like these. If not, pass. He is much different here than in his poetry or children stories.

⭐Rudyard Kipling is one of those timeless writers of the Victorian-Edwardian era that is still great 100 years later. This book of his Horror & Fantasy genre’ stories is a great addition to any Kipling collection. Please take into consideration that what we today call “Horror & Fantasy” wasn’t the same back in Mr. Kipling’s day. Instead of the gore-fest & the waving of spells by wizards & witches, it carries more on a more psychological line of thought. An example being”The Phantom Rickshaw”.The story centers around a man that recounts his encounters with, you guessed it, the phantom of an acquaintance he once knew & how it had thrown his whole life into disarray. I won’t go on a rant, but if you like well written & very visual settings, As Kipling does oh so well, I suggest when you see this book, purchase it! It’s a light, very different & enjoyable read. 🙂

⭐Excellent book for getting a flavor of the Indian Raj period of time when England ruled the world. It takes a short time to get into the way the book is written in the vernacular of the time, but it gives you a deeper feeling of how the characters think and their backgrounds. “The Man Who Would Be King” is one of the stories. This alone makes it worth the purchase of the book.

⭐Stories way beyond expectations.Book sheer size … way to big.

⭐Good condition and as described. GREAT READ – variety of period scary, funny, heartfelt, imaginative tales.

⭐This book is very thick and heavy…shipping was fast and arrived in great condition.I enjoyed some of the stories but there were those that just dragged on an on so it’s a mixed bag.You get some good stories and some that aren’t all that interesting.

⭐Some stories are weird (it was the 19th century!), but Kipling’s writing is a pleasure to experience.

⭐Good compendium.

⭐Kipling is one of my very favorite writers …these short-stories are a treasure,on top it comes with a fine intro by Gaiman,as for Stephen Jones,he can do no wrong as I see it…so why not 5 stars?Typos-and more than a few…look,I’m not a pedant nor is english my first language but such silly typos lets the book down and detract from the reading pleasure…still a wondeful book,so I’m happy…but with such excellent material, please dont be sloppy…T

⭐You need to be open to the context of his writing–attitudes, events, historical time, language. My husband wasn’t, and he didn’t like the book at all. I read a lot of material from this time, and loved the book. These are not ‘modern’ horror stories, with slash and burn type horror–they’re quieter and sneakier. Wonderful.

⭐One word: creepy. Okay, lots more words, but most refer to having your skin crawl. Intriguing writer!

⭐For my guy’s dad for Xmas…He Loves it. Prompt delivery…Thank you!

⭐I didn’t really like him
