Description

When journalist Louise Kramer hires Cliff Hardy to find Billie Marchant, Hardy heads for unfamiliar territory of the far south-western suburbs of Sydney. Billie claims to have information about media big-wheel Jonas Clement — the subject of an incriminating expose by Kramer. Clement doesn’t want Billie found and Clement’s enemies want to find her first.

Hardy tracks Billie down, but saving Billie’ means not only rescuing her, it means saving her from herself. Billie, ex-stripper, sometime hooker and druggie, is a handful. Hardy gets help from members of the Pacific Islander community and others, but the enemies close in and he is soon fighting on several different fronts.

Clement and his chief rival, Barclay Greaves, have heavies in the field, and Hardy has to negotiate his way through their divided loyalties. Some negotiations involve cunning but others involve guns. The action takes place against the backdrop of the Federal election campaign, and all outcomes are uncertain.

‘I don’t know how many Cliff Hardy novels there are, but there aren’t enough.’ – Kerry Greenwood, Sydney Morning Herald

‘Hardy is a wonderful creation still, under Corris’s magisterial narrative control, capable of those odd echoes and resonances, the elegiac interludes, that characterise the best crime writing.’ Graeme Blundell, Weekend Australian odd echoes and resonances, the elegiac interludes, that characterise the best crime writing.’ – Graeme Blundell, Weekend Australian

User’s Reviews

From Booklist For readers not yet familiar with Australian detective Cliff Hardy, the North American release of this novel offers an excellent opportunity to meet one of the more engaging sleuths on the international beat. In Saving Billie, Hardy is hired by a journalist to find out what happened to a missing source. Billie Marchant has information about media bigwig Jonas Clement, or so she claims. Soon enough, saving Billie becomes a potentially deadly endeavor. Caught between Clement and his archrival, both of whom are hell-bent on finding the missing woman, it takes all of Hardy’s skills to keep himself, his client, and his quarry in one piece. ⭐ What a great read this book was. A fast-paced thriller around Sydney with a believable private investigator from the old school. n This guy does not win every battle but his tenacity brings the right ending. It’s always interesting when you can actually pick the scenery where the action takes place.

⭐ Another great book by this author.

⭐ Peter Corris is the writer of the quintessential Sydney crime novel. Just as Robert B Parker’s Spencer is Boston, Corris’s Cliff Hardy is Sydney. It is probably safe to say that most America crime readers are not familiar with the works of Corris. This is a great pity. His Cliff Hardy series is a tremendous read. I can recommend any book in the series without reservation. In “Saving Billie” we see Cliff at work in his typical dogged manner. Life seems to through all sorts of obstacles in his path but Cliff deals with them and, to a greater or lesser degree, succeeds. Here, he is hired to locate Billie Marchant which he does without too much trouble before a whole series of other events serve to make his life more difficult. He gets beaten up, narrowly avoids death but seems to put most of the pieces together. And all this proceeds against the wonderful backdrop that is Sydney; grimy, boisterous yet beautiful all at once.To all American readers, do yourself a large favour. Discover Cliff Hardy. Your efforts will be rewarded.

⭐ Always enjoyed a Cliff Hardy thriller. But it looks like he’s about to hang up his gun and run for Marrickville council on a Greens ticket judging by his musings in this book. I like my private eyes to be tough but compassionate but non-partisan. Cliffy’s going a bit starry-eyed in his old age.

⭐ Corris at his best; enjoyable reading
