⭐I took a discrete math course in the early 1980s where the prof preferred to use Schaum’s outlines for his courses because they were a fraction of the cost of traditional textbooks and nearly as good. He used this book as the text for his discrete math courses. I see the content is nearly identical with an appendix covering cryptographic topics.I liked this book and its progression through the topics. When my daughter took the same class a few years ago I suggested this book as a supplement.I understand that opinions vary greatly about the utility of Schaum’s books. But there are two math books that stand out to me as surprisingly good. This is one of them and the other is the cartoon guide to statistics. If discrete math is one of your interests (and if you are taking any SW-related course it should be), then this is a good, cheap reference.
⭐A Discrete Mathematics outline in the Schaum’s fashion & style is certainly useful and sure one of its main advantages is pushing the reader towards further reading; just like other Schaum’s titles, this one offers a good start and a big picture. Typos are never to be considered a mortal sin, yet I think it’s unacceptable to find some in theorems’ statements, thus yielding false theorems. As long as typos appear in PROVEN theorems, a watchful reader can sure spot them, but what about UN-proven theorems, whose statements are meant to be “just accepted” ? Crime. This is a math book! I strongly urge Mc Graw-Hill to publish an updated errata page for this book (and for any other title containing such awful mistakes). Bottom line: reader beware! Keep an eye on a different resource while checking this out, exspecially when it comes to statements.
⭐Great book for exam review and it cover nearly all topics required in an undergrad or a foundational graduate Discrete Math course. All topics are supported by solved examples that help reinforce the concepts. I would not use it as the main text as it still lacks in detailed conceptual pedagogy. However, using it in tandem with class lecture will surely help you out when you’re revising for quizzes and exams.
⭐This book is crisp. It was a delight to read for my discrete mathematics class. It’s explanations went right into the material. There wasn’t any unneeded information to distract you. It was gentle with it’s presentation and it’s non-intimidation encouraged me to explore further than the class required. The practice problems were very useful and there was never any ambiguity nor confusion about how the author got to the answer. Thanks to this book, it was easy to receive an A. If you are a professor or instructor who wants your students to succeed, make this useful book a requirement.
⭐Would have liked more on graphs, but it’s a good easy to understand book for someone who is new to the subject.
⭐Good supplement to discrete text. Sequence of topics is at instructor’s discretion. Fewer typos than expected.Would have preferred separate solutions to exercises (as answers are given right after each problem). Better breadth of topics — with appendices — than other outlines. A good buy.
⭐great product, fast service.
⭐I have been using this for my discrete math course at UCB and it is pretty neat. I like how it covers the topics generally and in a straight forward way first and then gives example problems and supplementary problems. It has a good format.
⭐There were quite a few mistakes early on and, as a beginner, I just thought I didn’t understand it. I was able to ask some mathematician friends and they agreed typos were responsible for my confusion. So for a beginner, pretty useless imo
⭐I’m really not great at maths at all. I started a computer science course at university last year and was put on a discrete maths module. Most of the content is quite easy to understand and useful. It’s a good introduction is all I can say, I guess.
⭐Covers a large amount of material in a succinct and accurate way. It’s not exactly stylish in presentation, but I have not found a better, more comprehensive source of quick reference for computer science related math topics.
⭐Typical Schaum’s. The book covers lots of topics and there are many examples. The end chapters are advanced but not treated in great depth.
⭐This is a great book – It has solved problems the teaching and then the questions to try!
