Description
In her Avon debut, New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Jill Shalvis launches a fun, sexy new contemporary romance series featuring a boy, a girl, and one wily wishing well.
Choose the one guy you can’t have . . .
As captain of a San Francisco Bay tour boat, Pru can handle rough seas—the hard part is life on dry land. Pru loves her new apartment and her neighbors; problem is, she’s in danger of stumbling into love with Mr. Right for Anybody But Her.
Fall for him—hard . . .
Pub owner Finn O’Riley is six-foot-plus of hard-working hottie who always makes time for his friends. When Pru becomes one of them, she discovers how amazing it feels to be on the receiving end of that deep green gaze. But when a freak accident involving darts (don’t ask) leads to shirtless first aid, things rush way past the friend zone. Fast.
And then tell him the truth.
Pru only wants Finn to be happy; it’s what she wishes for at the historic fountain that’s supposed to grant her heart’s desire. But wanting him for herself is a different story—because Pru’s been keeping a secret that could change everything. . . .

⭐ Opening up the first book in a series is always, for me, filled with anticipation. Especially when it’s from one of my favorite Romance authors, – yes like most readers I have many favorites yet Jill Shalvis ranks right up there toward the top of that list. I crave the comfort of the types of stories I’ve loved before, but being a contrary human I also want something different, something I haven’t experienced from them yet. I wasn’t too far into Sweet Little Lies before I knew that this was the beginning of one enticing, engaging series. When you can hook me by the end of the first chapter into needing to know what happens to Finn and Pru – then you’ve started a journey for me that I will stick to until the end of that series and completely enjoy myself. The Heartbreaker Bay series centers around a tight-knit group of friends who have seen each other through rough times, good times and are more comfortable with each other than family in many cases. Sweet Little Lies brings the focus on Finn and the Irish Pub he owns that is often the gathering place for everyone to touch base at. Finn’s and his brother Sean’s lives were touched by tragedy when Finn was just starting out in adult life. Their father’s death put him as the one person to make a good life for himself and his brother. Of course sacrifices, changes in plans had to be made but Finn never hesitated and to this day Finn and Sean have a tight if at times rocky relationship. Finn’s life is full, busy, satisfying and he’s not looking for romance especially after the way his most recent foray into dating ended as it did. Yet there’s something about the new girl in the square. Her eyes speak of sadness but her manner shouts of something indescribable and special… something that Finn is drawn to and surprisingly wants to discover more about. His gut tells him she’s going to be important – he simply doesn’t realize just how important yet.For all of Pru’s adult life she has been on a mission to right wrongs done to so many others. Quietly, without fanfare simply doing what is right. She knows she can never make up for the actions of another but she can and will help where she can. Years ago she’d already helped Finn and Sean without them being aware of it. Yet she feels a need to know that Finn is alright, that his life has turned out the way he wanted. She wouldn’t have said she needed to be in his life but she did need to know that he was happy. It doesn’t make sense to her either but it’s how she’s felt for a long time now. What she hadn’t expected was the strong, fiery attraction between them or for it to blaze into flames so easily or quickly. Pru knows that she has to tell Finn the truth before they get in too deep, before hearts can be broken and lives changed… trouble is, they’re already in too deep and there’s no turning back now.Sweet Little Lies will grab your attention, capture your heart and hold you hostage until the final page. Pru is, well she’s just a sweetheart. Strong even if she doesn’t always believe that of herself, set on a course that most people would have never taken. What she’s not telling Finn is huge and the longer she waits the more difficult it’s becoming. She hadn’t planned on falling for him and now that she fears she’s going to lose him her world is crashing in on her. Finn is definitely hot and stubborn and totally committed to Pru, even if he’s not using quite that word just yet. Together they are the perfect match with enough real quirks to make them totally believable. But this isn’t just a story about Pru and Finn, it’s also about their tribe, that group of people who make up a family that will be there for them throughout anything life tosses their way. The fun part is going to be discovering all of their stories along the way in the Heartbreaker Bay series. If you enjoy believable, realistic stories with people who you could walk past in your own neighborhood, then Sweet Little Lies is a story that you’ll want to dive into. I’d recommend this one for any Romance reader who loves having the secondary characters be almost as important to the story as the main couple. It’s a really good story, and an excellent beginning to the series.I own a Kindle edition of this story.
⭐ This is a charming and sweet novel. Jill Shalvis has a comforting writing style that has an easy and familiar feel and has a nice level of humor and reality. I love that this story has a strong group of friends at the center of it and that this group is very supportive of the hero and heroine as they navigate their love story. Jill Shalvis creates characters that feel fleshed out and make me excited to read all of their stories.I really enjoyed Finn and Pru’s love story. I love that they learn to understand that certain preconceived notions are not always the truth. I love that they both learn what is truly important when it comes to their pasts and their futures. And I love the delightful relationship they develop with each other, as well as, the wonderful support they have from their friends. This was a great start to a series that can be read as standalone novels (I have read this series very out of order and I am still delighted by each novel). Highly recommend this novel if you love a romance that has a small town feel (without being small town), that has a nice moderate level of steam that is not closed door and a couple who can spend their time exploring what their relationship could be.
⭐ First in the Heartbreaker Bay series, in which Pru tosses in a coin with a wish for Finn O’Riley to find love and fun in his life. But Finn has a lot on his plate, making sure his pub makes a profit and watching over his younger brother, whose seems to be life’s good, let’s have fun.The trouble with Pru’s plan is that it harbors a secret she is loath to share with Finn, certain that if she does, he’ll never spend time with her again. Complicating her hesitancy is that she’s fallen for Finn–hard–but refuses to acknowledge it. Finn’s in the same boat, though he doesn’t dare share either, for reasons having to do with what happened years earlier. These two people deserve each other, but the secrets they harbor may be the end of their relationship–unless they can get past their fears and face the future together. Can they? Will they?
⭐ My Review:Happy sigh…a new series from Jill Shalvis. I cannot tell you just how excited I am about this new series. I preordered way before the books were even released, but now that I’ve read book #1, I’m even more so. I love the setup for this series. It takes place in San Francisco and centers around a group of friends who all work and live in the historic area of town. Pru is new to the area and the building. She’s a ships captain who does day tours around the bay for Jake. While she’s been doing the job for a while, she moved to this particular building for a reason…to get close to Finn and his younger brother Sean. She has ulterior motives. She’s spent her entire adult life taking care of the people who were directly affected by the car accident that killed her parents…a car accident that was their fault because her father was drunk. Sean and Finn are the last people on her list that she still feel need her intervention, because they’re the ones who lost just as much as her in that accident. She lost both her parents. They lost their one remaining parent, their father.Finn was 21, and Sean was 14 when their parents died. Finn has spent every moment since then trying to make sure Sean has a good life, something that he doesn’t fully appreciate. Finn is married to the bar trying to make it a success for both of them. Sean plays. Finn has decided that life is okay this way. He doesn’t have to worry about getting his heart broken. He’s certainly not looking for love. The thing that made this story for me was the building with its historic charm and magical fountain and the group of friends who all work there. They are a varied group…and there’s a lot of them, but they love one another and take care of each other, even if they do gossip like firemen (lol). I loved the legend of the fountain and the dumbwaiter in the building that proved to have some interesting plot points. Even the homeless guy has amazing charm and insight into this group of people who all interact here. There was a magical quality to the story just because of all those depths. And I LOVED that about it.I also really loved why Pru was here, and her history with Jake…wow, they have a complex friendship, but I liked that. The little glimpses of her life as a boat captain were interesting and I also loved the nights at the pub. It was simply a great book and I can pretty much guarantee that this series will have an honored place on my keeper shelf.I received a complimentary copy of this book in return for an honest review, but I’d already ordered a print copy of it ages ago, because Jill Shalvis is an auto-read author for me.
⭐ “People shifted between them. The place was crowded as always, but when the way was clear again, Finn was still looking at her, steady and unblinking, those dark green eyes flickering with something other than amusement now, something that began to warm her from the inside out.”Sweet Little Lies is the first of Jill Shalvis’ books that I have read, and I can’t believe I haven’t discovered this awesome writer and her wonderful books before. This book is the first in a new series, Heartbreaker Bay, set in San Francisco about a group of friends who all live and or work in the Cow Hollow District. It is here we meet Pru and Finn, the main characters of this book, who certainly warmed my heart with their story!Pru, who is captain of a tour boat, orphan and has a whole lot of heart, meets Finn at the local pub he co-owns with his brother, Sean. Funny, gorgeous and oh so addictive, this couple had me devouring this book from the get-go. Hidden depths and layers, secrets and inner torment add to the well-written storyline. Throw in a homeless man, an infamous wishing well and an intriguing bunch of friends (can’t wait for their stories to be told!) and you have the contemporary romance series that you will be desperately impatient for the next instalment to be released!
⭐ I’m admitting now that I’ve never read anything by Shalvis before, and I feel like I should’ve been introduced sooner. I initially found out about her books because book two in Heartbreaker Bay, The Trouble With Mistletoe, is coming to passionflix come December. I’m not the kind of person who can just jump into the middle of a series (even if each book involves different characters), so I started from the beginning, and was not disappointed!Pru is a boat captain for a tourism company, SF Bay Tours, and Finn O’Riley is the owner of the local pub, O’Riley’s. She has her mutt of a dog, Thor, to keep her company, while he not only operates his own business, but is trying to raise his party-brother, Sean, as well. Both Pru and Finn have had to deal with certain tragic incidents that they coped with in their own way, but when their paths cross, she knows she has to step in. Striking up a conversation while she cozied up to the bar one night seems to get the ball rolling. While flying solo at O’Riley’s, she notices how lonely he seems and how hard he works, she feels obligated to get him to have fun. Detected immediately by Finn’s group of close friends, Pru can’t help but warm up to each of them immediately (and there seem to be quite a few), and catching Finn’s eye. Once the two get to talking, an unlikely friendship begins to develop. It’s on another night, when they have a bad encounter with some darts, that things take a turn into new and interesting territory.Pru wants Finn to open up and live life, she’s even labeled herself the “Fun Whisperer”. She plans on doing exactly that…without somehow falling for him in the process. Pru has too much baggage that carries its weight in the form of a huge secret she doesn’t talk to anyone about. Not even Finn; especially not Finn. All she can hope to do is right the wrongs she’d lived among prior and keep her fingers crossed for the best. When I think “contemporary romance”, this is the kind of story I envision. The story of Finn, Pru, and the whole rowdy, San Fran crew played out like a fun romantic comedy. I adored the way this entire story unfolded. It had such a lovely and balanced mix of angst and sexy fun. Finn and Pru were such a good yin and yang situation. He was serious, practical, and focused on his business while helping his brother, Sean mature and get serious about his life. Pru took a bad time in her life and did what she could to turn her present and future into positivity and fun. She might’ve known from the start how impossible it would be to resist Finn, but she puts up a valiant effort.Needless to say, I’ve already purchased books one through four, and I’m sure I’ll run to my local bookstore and grab the rest in the series when I get time. Each installment may involve a different member of the SF family, but I’m anxious to to meet every single one of them and know their story. If you haven’t met Finn and Pru yet, or you’re looking forward to Willa and Keane’s debut on Passionflix, go meet them now!
⭐ I must have been underneath a rock since I started reading romance books, but I finally picked up a Jill Shalvis book. I’m glad I did. The reason why I finally put aside other books to read a Jill Shalvis book is due to the fact she has a book turning into a movie thanks to Passionflix. It’s her second book in her Heartbreaker Bay series and of course I wanted to read her series in order, so I finished the first book in the series Sweet Little Lies in 2 1/2 days. I’m so glad I decided to read in order because I really enjoyed Sweet Little Lies. I wouldn’t of gotten to know Pru and Finn. They were such a adorable couple, when they weren’t fighting their feelings for each other. What made Sweet Little Lies an enjoyable sweet story:*The cute main characters together – Pru and Finn.*The secondary characters – Willa, Sean, Spence, Jake, Archer, Elle, Eddie, and so much more.*Pru’s personality. She’s really funny and caring. She also has a VERY big heart. I adored her.*Finn’s determination and sexiness. Oh, he’s sexiness.*The storyline that Jill created for the characters. LOVED it!Jill Shalvis brings together two characters that both had a tragedy in their lives. Although, the tragedy that hit Pru really affected Finn and a lot more people because the tragedy that happened was caused by her parents years ago. Pru is trying to right the wrongs to those people that her parents affected and she is determine for Finn to have happiness in his life. She doesn’t expect to really fall for him though. Even her best friend Jake warns her to not get close unless she tells Finn the truth, but it’s hard to tell Finn the truth. How could she not fall for Finn? He’s such a sweet guy and I really couldn’t get enough of him. Although, at the end of the story I almost wanted to slap him silly.Jill did an amazing job with this story and I look forward to diving into the second book. I hope Sweet Little Lies also gets made into a movie because I would love to watch Pru and Finn’s story come to life. Now I look to diving into the second book after reading Pru and Finn’s story. Oh, and let me not forget the ending was perfect too. I could go on and on, but don’t want to give up too many details on such a sweet caring story. I will say Pru is such a sweet character in the story and she deserved happiness too.Jill Shalvis definitely is an author I’ve added to my to-my-auto-buy list.I give this book 4.5 stars and highly recommend it to Contemporary Romance readers out there.
⭐ Jill Shalvis always delivers the sparks we crave in relationships! The electric connection between her characters jumps across the pages, like a live wire.In Sweet Little Lies, San Francisco is the gorgeous locale of this story. Ms. Shalvis has served up Finn O’Riley, who along with his brother, Sean, own and run an Irish Pub.Pru Harris, better known as the “Fun Whisperer” because of her joyful personality, loves her job as a Tour Boat Captain and her life filled with dear friends. But, she is weighed down by a secret that is eating away at her.I loved this book, as I do all of her writing. With this story, though, there is such drama and great humor, moving the descriptive passages along like a wonderful cool stream. The pets in each book, also, just about steal the show and add an extra loving dollop of happiness that is fun to see.No spoilers here ~ just treat yourself to an amazing work. I will be re-reading this again and again. Kudos!
⭐ Book 1 in the Heartbreaker Bay series. This is a trope I haven’t read before–a selfless guilt ridden heroine (Pru) who wants to atone for injustices done by her parents to a host of others. This is what leads her to Finn. She wants to see him secure and happy but keep her motivation secret. This of course leads to their black moment, but ultimately they get their well deserved HEA.I’ve read the first nine books in this series. The best parts IMO are the side characters and the setting. It takes place in the San Francisco Bay area and the uniqueness of that part of America is really well described both in terms of the topography and the liberal mindset. Prime example Old Man Eddie–a quirky, homeless, aging hippie who keeps his ear to the ground and knows everything that is happening in their little community. Eddie is a stroke of genius in this series. He is a conduit for transmitting information to the other characters that they couldn’t have otherwise known. The other side characters in the group of friends are also well defined and interesting. And of course the fountain in the courtyard on which you can wish for true love serves as a connecting thread throughout the series. This author is very good at constructing her stories, although continuity is sometimes less than perfect. I’m just not fond of her writing style and her dated way of speaking. And I didn’t really care for the narrator either. So mixed review on this one.
⭐ Sweet Little LiesAuthor: Jill ShalvisReview by: Karen Massee I have read books by Jill Shalvis before and have enjoyed them, but this one was not one of my favorites. Basically, it’s a love story based on a woman whose father’s drunk driving was responsible for the death and injury of multiple people in a terrible auto accident. Pru has made it her life’s mission to make amends for his actions to the best of her ability. Giving Finn O’Reilly the money to buy an Irish pub after the death of his father (a victim in the accident) to support him and his brother was just one such attempt to right a wrong. Moving into the area, and working as a captain of a tour boat, Pru has made her life in the small sub community of San Francisco that surrounds the Pub. The close knit friends take care of each other and provide all the family Pru needs…. Including of course her new friend Fin (the recipient of her anonymous gift). Fin has no idea that Pru is there trying to make amends and falls for her sweet, loving personality. Likewise, Pru falls for Fin. His fun loving, charismatic personality charm her from day one. The story evolves kind of slowly from here with Pru debating whether or not to tell fin about her link to the auto accident that killed his parents, and after finally deciding that yes, she needed to tell him, she kept putting it off waiting for a “better” time. Well, as the story evolves, they fall in love with each other but of course her omission of telling him of her link to the accident that killed his parents and also that she was the benefactress of the money used to start his pub is revealed and Fin’s thrown for a loop. Now Fin is left feeling deceived and has to decide is she worth it? Personally, I didn’t see what the holdup was or how she thought waiting would make it better, but there you have it. Other than that, there didn’t really didn’t seem to be any angst or problem that needed to be overcome. Overall, it just seemed to be a bunch of should I tell him, or shouldn’t I? If I decide to tell him, when should I tell him? I think that the book could have used more depth to it. I actually found myself wanting to put it down several times to pick up another book but I made myself finish. All-in-all, it wasn’t terrible, but Jill Shalvis is a great author and I expected more.
