Description
Brilliant distillations of the strategies of war—and the subtle social game of everyday life—by the bestselling author of The 48 Laws of Power and The Laws of Human Nature Robert Greene’s groundbreaking guides, The 48 Laws of Power, The Art of Seduction, and Mastery, espouse profound, timeless lessons from the events of history to help readers vanquish an enemy, ensnare an unsuspecting victim, or become the greatest in your field. In The 33 Strategies of War, Greene has crafted an important addition to this ruthless and unique series. Spanning world civilizations, synthesizing dozens of political, philosophical, and religious texts and thousands of years of violent conflict, The 33 Strategies of War is the I-Ching of conflict, the contemporary companion to Sun Tzu’s The Art of War. Abundantly illustrated with examples from history, including the folly and genius of everyone from Napoleon to Margaret Thatcher, Shaka the Zulu to Lord Nelson, Hannibal to Ulysses S. Grant, as well as movie moguls, Samurai swordsmen, and diplomats, each of the thirty-three chapters outlines a strategy that will help you win life’s wars. Learn the offensive strategies that require you to maintain the initiative and negotiate from a position of strength, or the defensive strategies designed to help you respond to dangerous situations and avoid unwinnable wars. The great warriors of battlefields and drawing rooms alike demonstrate prudence, agility, balance, and calm, and a keen understanding that the rational, resourceful, and intuitive always defeat the panicked, the uncreative, and the stupid. An indispensable book, The 33 Strategies of War provides all the psychological ammunition you need to overcome patterns of failure and forever gain the upper hand.

⭐Here we go: I was in an unhealthy and emotionally abusive relationship. The kicker was that I worked with my partner, sharing the stage of our work setting, training athletes. It was getting to the point where I was being so heavily manipulated and put down all the time, that I was blind to what I was putting up. What I was forced to deal with was severely polluted & unacceptable treatment that no one in their right mind should have to endure. So this book… with it’s slicing wit and seductive charm made its way back into my life one day. I had read bits of it before, and was very intrigued… but I guess previously I had nothing to apply it to, to prove its value. Also, since the start of this relationship, pursuing my own mind and reaching for resources for development was hardly an available possibility. My, did that attitude soon expire. I was about to see that the revolution you are looking for is always available… and it rests with you.Jump ahead 5 months after getting enmeshed in it. I read the book at first chronologically, and then I slowly started jumping the chapters, using the table of contents as a guide to piece together the behaviors of this man I was with. I was coming to understand the violence in his actions towards me, what he was doing, and how he was doing it. Slowly, subconciously, a transformation began. I started working on myself. I got in really great shape. I began to inwardly declare war.Without realizing it, I was becoming very much aware of his plays for power, and I had taught myself to ignore them, to take them with a grain of salt… while continuing to let him believe that he was the one pulling the strings. Then one day, a sad letter came in the mail for my outspoken oppressor in the form of one of the biggest blows to an ego that a man should face–for his blow came suddenly, and publicly–as I was leaving, stepping out the door with one of his top athletes.Strangely, none of this was pre-planned. I had not meditated on this outcome. I had not planned a guerrilla strategy as mentioned in the later parts of the book. All I can say to you is that something clicked. Wham, bam, thank you mam… and it all came crashing down. This isn’t to say that I didn’t take some bumps on the way down myself… but this is war. There are always compromises and losses to consider, but a good strategist will find their way to the finish that services them best. In the end, I ultimately came up the winner, knowing that I was done with the futility of being in a macabre relationship, that was taking its toll, killing me slowly everyday. Gone are those days. On an even more successful note, I am happy to report that I’m still with the guy I left with. All of this has been a true blessing that has both lifted my spirits, and nourished my formerly broken mind.If being a victim is not for you, read this classic book on strategy. Whether you realize it or not, it’ll take you away from the dangers you face by being one… in one sense or another.
⭐Good information for the person looking for insightful strategies applied to warfare in a variety of circumstances and contexts. Makes reference to real and factual escenarios .Robert Greene is a Master in his own right! Enlightening.
⭐First the disclaimer – I am not a fan of Machiavellian philosophy and when I tried reading Robert Greene’s first book: The 48 Laws of Power, I found it full of deceit and strategies that conflicted with my value system and so I could never finish reading it and thought of not touching any of his works again. Turns out I was pleasantly surprised by reading this one. What I really like:- “Everything is fair in love and war”This book is a collection of war stories & strategies employed by some of history’s greatest rulers and gives you an insight on what makes them truly “great”. It is sort of a mini-biography of these great personalities giving you a well laid out picture of their circumstances and choices that worked & didn’t work for them.- “The moment you aim for results, you are in the realm of strategy”This book is a mind opener as it broadens your thinking and makes you realize certain similarities in your everyday life situations with those used in this book. It makes general statements about present day life and you will find your mind automatically making subtle connections with your personal situations and sometimes even realizing how things could have been done differently.- Those of you who have an interest in History or like watching the shows on History Channel will admire the way these stories have presented. Although this is a large book, it has been divided into 33 smaller chapters each of which talks about a specific war strategy making it easier to read. You can also read chapters from in between as most of the text makes sense even when read in isolation from other chapters.- The book is very well researched and it feels like you are reading a summary of important lessons from other well written books on military warfare. All in all, you will find the stories interesting to keep turning the pages and wanting yourself to complete the end of a chapter in every sitting. What I don’t like:- At places, the book contains fairly long quoted texts from other great warfare books in the middle of an interesting story (specially true for kindle edition) that interrupt the flow and take you away from original text- Certain chapters are fairly long and borderline slightly boring with too much details which can be avoided. The book itself is also quite heavy read.
⭐This book is about defending and attacking and being bitter and appearing successful to others. This book is for people who care more about their reputations than the quality of their lives. For example, it advises you to end your participation in activities according to how it will best look to others. If you enjoy an activity, tough luck, if you’re no longer excelling in it, you’re supposed to give it up.
⭐Ah, just a half-considered list. Just not much good. Go read the classics, from people who’ve been there, like Sun Tzu, Machiavelli, instead of some guy writing pop-culture self-self-self carp.
⭐I wanted the Hardback copy but it was sold out, so I bought the paperback copy, I should have paid attention….I prefer to read tangible books and my bedside lamp is usually sufficient. However, the only way I will be able to read this is with the overhead light on which gives me a headache. Very disappointed and will probably just opt for reading the Kindle version as an uncomplicated alternative.
⭐This is quite a long book however its well worth reading Rob goes into great depth in terms of dealing with people who provoke you, his examples are great.Reading this book alongside the 48 Laws of Power will complement it further. Do be warned its quite a long read but worth while.
⭐I would describe this compact version of the 33 Strategies of war as a very good companion to the 49 Laws of Power. The larger versions of both books are great reading but unkind to tired eyes, while searching carefully for the right solution to a specific dilemma. My only criticism to all of Robert Greens books is the use of Red ink for the marginal based notes and would have preferred Blue. A copy of this book should be issued to all members of the armed services as a modern day ‘Survive to Fight’ guide. In a society where people question the real motives of their fellow peers, Greens books are starting to become the necessary social skills black book to get ahead in life. As a former member of the armed forces who experiences the cut and thrust world of society, where to be nice to others gets you nowhere I have at times used this indispensable aid as my own counter-counter measures to think, act and get ahead of the individual who tries to cheat and manipulate shortcuts to their own ladder of success. A top star 5 out of 5 rating.
