Description

The second volume in Stephen King’s #1 bestselling Dark Tower Series, The Drawing of the Three is an “epic in the making” (Kirkus Reviews) about a savage struggle against underworld evil and otherworldly enemies.“Stephen King is a master at creating living, breathing, believable characters,” hails The Baltimore Sun. Beginning just less than seven hours after The Gunslinger ends, in the second installment to the thrilling Dark Tower Series, Roland encounters three mysterious doorways on a deserted beach along the Western Sea. Each one enters into a different person’s life in New York—here, he joins forces with the defiant young Eddie Dean, and with the beautiful, brilliant, and brave Odetta Holmes, to save the Dark Tower. “This quest is one of King’s best…it communicates on a genuine, human level…but is rich in symbolism and allegory” (Columbus Sunday Dispatch). It is a science fiction odyssey that is unlike any tale that Stephen King has ever written.

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐The Dark Tower novels are quite different, and so is the story they tell. Its an odd setting because of the dual world view but it Could explain a lot of things that happen in our world. The story is told in a number of volumes and should be read from number one on. Starting in the middle will be confusing. The settings jump around a bit between New York and the “other world” locations, but that isn’t difficult to understand, if you accept the premise of the dual worlds and that there are paths (doors) between them. The main character is Roland, the gunslinger, but he isn’t the usual definition of “gunslinger” in our old west stories. He is more of a Paladin that tries to correct wrongs, but he is the last of his kind. He has an obsession with what he thinks is happening to his world and why it is falling apart. He is caught up in a riddle where he sees things happening that seem related but he does not yet know how or why. The story is his quest to find out and do something to stop his world from falling apart, if he can. He acquires a few companions on his trek. These people add flavor to the quest because they are from our world and their experiences in this world help him on the quest in his world. How is part of the charm of the story, and the twists that I think make the story and give it the body that makes a good yarn. Patience is required while reading this collection of novels because the story is Long. Mr. King’s comments on this are in each book and help to explain why there are so many parts to the story.

⭐This is the first time I have reread this series in 20 years or so. The first time I read through this series, I wanted to see Roland as a hero. I forgave things I might not normally. Knowing what I do now, reading this novel, it is glaringly apparent where this story is headed. It is still a fantastic story.

⭐The first book in the series was very meh for me. About a 6/10. People rave about this series so I decided to continue it. This book was better in every way. I’d easily give this an 8.5

⭐From the moment I read the first sentence, I was glued to the book. I can only apologize for not finding them sooner. I am on Book 3. I can not stand to put them down. I am so glad my husband likes pb&j sandwiches. I am the type of person who lives in the book. Thank you for the excitement, the close calls, the fights, the struggle, the quest, and to explore one of the most interesting layered characters the gunslinger that we get a slight peek at his core through the haze of his path. I am enjoying this series immensely. Thank you Stephen King for all the great joy you have brought to my life.

⭐A great book full of unique content, this is no cookie cutter novel. I highly recommend this work, Stephen King is to be allowed his peculiarities, they are not his greatest caviar. It is his originality which sets him apart. The feeling he conveys in the forward of discovery while writing causes excitement in our own spellbound readings. King is not gifted, he is the gift.

⭐I’ve read books by King in the past so I’m very familiar with his legendary talent as a writer but I strayed from the genre that he leans to years ago. With the movie coming out soon, I heard a couple of friends discussing the Dark Tower series and decided to check it out. After struggling through the first book (mostly an intro to The Gunslinger and setting the foundation for the following books but worth the read) I read The Drawing of the Three and became obsessed with the series. Almost done with this one and greatly anticipating each and every one that follows.

⭐I would recommend this book to everyone!! This is the second time I have read this book and it is better than the first time I read it!! The dark tower series is hands down my favorite of any thing ive ever read. I am sure this will not be the last time i read The Drawing of the Three!!

⭐good book; but you must read the first in order to understand a little bit of how everything started in this novel; I described the pace as slow but I do not infer that this is a boring novel; it isn’t; the reason I say slow is that there is a lot of description of what the characters are thinking and sometimes Mr. Stephen King goes a little “overboard” in his descriptions of the place, characters, etc. You do have to use your imagination to see what exactly he is describing. When the action gets going you hardly want to put the book down; at least I didn’t.

⭐Continues the adventures of Roland the Gunslinger. You must read in series order.A longer book that the first one, set in our time, featuring three linked characters.Excellent writing, especially the Eddie character as he first encounters Roland.A very different novel is some respects – Roland is no longer a ‘lone wolf’ and the novel is much better for this expansion in characters.

⭐The second book in the Dark Tower series, The Drawing of the Three, is the continuing story of Roland on his quest to the Dark Tower. Picking up where the events of The Gunslinger left us, Roland has aged by almost ten years after his encounter with the Man in Black and is faced with a huge stretch of beach which he must now travel. Not only does Roland have to face this journey with little food or water, but he is soon attacked by lobster creatures that take off fingers from his right hand after which he is inflicted with a fever that grows ever worse. But all this is just a background to the bigger picture – the doors he finds along the beach that lead back to our world and into the heads of certain individuals. The Drawing of the Three takes Roland and puts him firmly in an unknown situation, with some very interesting results. Thrown into our world is a completely different experience for Roland and we see this immediately with his conversations with people he encounters. What is worse is the fact that as he’s taking over the body of someone else to do it and putting himself in danger in the process. However, King does a good job with Roland and lets us see more of his character and personality through these situations. Roland may be a stranger to these places, but he sure isn’t stupid and knows what needs to be done – and how.The interaction between Roland and the people he must communicate with is great. As the title suggests, there are three doors he must enter in order to draw his three. The first of these is Eddie Dean, a junkie and native New Yorker. Eddie is an interesting character because of his flaws and the fact that he isn’t just another doped up waster. He has something special about him but has been led into the wrong situations in the past which has ended him up in some serious trouble. The second door leads to Odetta Holmes and Detta Walker, one woman with split personalities. Roland senses the difference in these two immediately – one is kindly while the other is vicious, all of which goes back to an incident in their childhood. Not only this, but Odetta/Detta has lost her legs and is bound to a wheelchair which does not help Roland in is journey across a difficult terrain. The last door leads to Jack Mort, a man whose private life is in stark contrast to his successful career. He is a murderous man behind the false front, pushing innocent bystanders into traffic, trains and anything else he can get away with without notice. It’s difficult for me to say too much about the encounters that Roland has with these people with really spoiling the story, but King has weaved a very impressive story here. Many fates are intertwined and the repercussions of the events here are going to be felt for a while to come. The interactions between the characters, specifically with Roland, is very interesting and we get to see more of what makes Roland such a formidable person, and not only through his fighting. There is always a sense of danger throughout The Drawing of the Three and I never once felt the story was playing it safe, all of which made the pages turn all the quicker. Some of the twists here work very well and although hinted at during the story I didn’t fully appreciate the impact until the end, which has left the story open to progress at a good strong pace. The Drawing of the Three is another reason to pick up this series and is a strong novel in its own right, although even at book two you must have read the first installment to fully appreciate many of the events. Highly recommended.

⭐although i enjoyed the gunslinger, i understand why people though it slow and a slog until the final act. with this second volume you have no such issues. increased character development, as well as some fascinating new players plus tension and intrigue that will justify your investment and the continuation of the series.

⭐Don’t buy if you want the advertised collectable covers that spell out “Dark Tower”. The spine of this book and also book 3 are yellow.

⭐For me, this is about as compelling a story as one can get. As you will have gathered from the other glowing reviews, this is the second in the series and where this epic really gets going. I am, however, definitely NOT advising skipping volume 1, there is lots of scene setting there.I love the invention, the writing style, the story, everything. Mr. King was in exceptional form when he wrote this. My second read, easily as good as the first, and it’s good to refill the content that leaks out of memory. At time of writing, there were no 1 star reviews (out of 87) which says a lot, so yes start reading the gunslinger series. 4.6 out of 5 (and this review might just push that up) say you will be delighted.
