Description
Considering the development of life on Earth, the existence of life in extreme environments and the potential for life elsewhere in the Universe, this book gives a fascinating insight into our place in the Universe. Chris Impey leads the reader through the history, from the Copernican revolution to the emergence of the field of astrobiology – the study of life in the cosmos. He examines how life on Earth began, exploring its incredible variety and the extreme environments in which it can survive. Finally, Impey turns his attention to our Solar System and the planets beyond, discussing whether there may be life elsewhere in the Universe. Written in non-technical language, this book is ideal for anyone wanting to know more about astrobiology and how it is changing our views of life and the Universe. An accompanying website available at www.cambridge.org/9780521173841 features podcasts, articles and news stories on astrobiology.
User’s Reviews
Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐This was one of those non-fiction books that is actually thoroughly enjoyable, it is as easy to read as a fiction book and just as hard to put down. If you read a lot of science books about cosmology, evolution, etc, you won’t necessarily find a lot of new material here, but it is packaged in a friendly accessible and somewhat novel way that makes it work. (Not many books cover evolution of life on earth, the formation of the solar system and the hunt for distant planets in the same book). The book is easy to read without insulting your intelligence. The only part that I would not give 5 stars is the final chapter which was a bit more speculative philosophy (why might we not have me intelligent aliens yet) – some of this was maybe a little too speculative to seem plausible for me. But since we don’t know the answer to ‘where are they?’, I suppose there is a lot of room for speculation.Overall though, I definitely recommend it. I found I was looking at the NASA website just to see the most recent status of Kepler and various other projects. It just makes you want to know what’s out there.
⭐Great book! The information is presented in such a way to constantly keep you engaged. Extremely thought provoking material. One of the best books I’ve read in a long time.
⭐This is a good book on Astronomy written by a great teacher and practicing Astronomer at the University of Arizona. Dr. Impey teaches a introduction class on Coursera which is excellent and anyone looking for a good introduction to the science of Astronomy or looking to get an update on what is new and current in the field I can highly recommend it also.
⭐The Living Cosmos by Chris Impey Is a very thorough book on astrobiology and astronomy in general. I am taking anonline course given by Impey right now, so the book and the course go together. The writing style is non-technical,yet there is a lot of information given in this subject. There is some repetition on major points, but that is okay with me.Astrobiology is a hot field in science right now, with the Kepler telescope finding new candidates for earth-like planetson a regular basis. Chris Impey is in the lead with all this research.
⭐An amazing unbiased report of our position in the universe! Minis clue at best, and vastly but ordinary…just the prospect that we can ponder our position in the cosmos, is astounding! We may be really alone, and surely capable of destroying ourselves with our short sighted ego….thank you for this beautiful text!
⭐We probe the universe with our latest technology and hear only our own noise. This book is a great andidote for those cosmologists who promise us a universe teeming with life. The author thinks life in its most fundamental form may be plrentiful, evan in our own solar system, higher forms maybe not. I really enjoyed this book and recommend it.
⭐A fascinating book that explores life and its place in the Cosmos…from the Big Bang to the smallest of atoms on the stage of time. Technical yet very readable and well written. I am loving this book!
⭐I could not afford to stop reading The Living Cosmos !Chris, I thank you for hours spent on a brilliant and organized text.Luiz FC NovaesSao Paulo, Brazil
⭐This is such a great book. A while ago I had the pleasure of following a video astronomy course taught by Chris Impey and I was fascinated by the style. Had this book on my wishlist for a while and I am glad I purchased it. The narrative style is great and the book provides a lot of information spanning across very different scientific domains as well as historical notes. The way Chris explains the concepts is so great, funny and captivating, you don’t even realize the topics being debated are definitely not so straightforward. Funnily enough the JWST mission has just been delayed as I write this review… I guess we will have to hold our breaths for a little longer!
⭐Chris Impey has written a book of tremendous depth, covering the origins of the Universe, the start of life on eath and the possibilities, nay probability of life elsewhere in the Universe, in neighbouring planets, in nearby galaxies, in the outer Universe, and in parallel universes. His style is clear and entertaining, and his narrative draws the reader on. Veritably a tour de force!
⭐This is a comprehensive overview of the astrophysics of whether life exists out there, but does so in a comprehensible way.
⭐The item and the delivery were exactly as expected.
⭐Very Interesting.
