Description

Some people stay all summer long on the idyllic island of Belle Isle, North Carolina. Others come only for the weekends, and the mix between the regulars and “the weekenders” can sometimes make the sparks fly. Riley Griggs has a season of good times with friends and family ahead of her on Belle Isle when things take an unexpected turn. While waiting for her husband to arrive on the ferry one Friday afternoon, Riley is confronted by a process server who thrusts papers into her hand. And her husband is nowhere to be found.

So she turns to her island friends for help and support, but it becomes clear that each of them has their own secrets, and the clock is ticking as the mystery deepens…in a murderous way. Now Riley must find a way to investigate the secrets of Belle Island, the husband she might not really know, and the summer that could change everything.

⭐ I wanted to love this book because it was my first experience with this author and I wanted to have more to look forward to. Unfortunately I don’t think I will be going back for seconds. While there were no obvious flaws in the novel, there was nothing pulling me in. This book is several-hundred-pages-of-nothing. It’s not very exciting, it dragged on, and most of the time I found myself wishing I could speed read so I could just finish and be done with it (I hate to leave a book, even a bad one, unfinished). Page after page of this: rude mother, drunk brother, angry and resentful daughter, wishy washy main character. Fast forward several-hundred-pages and there is finally some resolution, but you just wasted 6 hours of your life on the story before it.I don’t need a story to be fast paced to love it, but I do need something. Character development, a storyline that doesn’t seem to go in circles, something. I feel bad saying it but don’t waste your time on this book!

⭐ I usually can’t wait for the annual release of Mary Kay’s new summer beach read. I have been a fan since I first read Savannah Blues years ago (and several times since). She specializes in interesting women who reinvent themselves after some type of life change and is at her best when her characters are forced to redecorate or rebuild a necessary habitat into a real home (especially using vintage and yard sale materials). It doesn’t matter if her character was once wealthy and clueless as in Savannah Breeze as long as she finds her way “home” eventually. The problem with The Weekenders is that the heroine is not even likable. How can you root for a trust fund baby and her obnoxious untrustworthy daughter? It is obvious that this book was written for the lucky ones who own their own beach house and resent the weekend intrusion of the “unwashed public” who dare trespass. She worries about her alcoholic brother yet is well on her way to becoming one herself. I found myself speed reading just to finish the book – a far cry from my usual slow read to appreciate all of the details that are Mary Kay trademarks. I usually reread her books during the winter months but have no desire to pick this up again. The only interesting character in the whole book was Aunt Roo and she had a minor role.

⭐ Riley is has had enough of her husband Wendell, not showing up for the last ferry of the day to Belle Island, confirms what she already knows, separation and divorce is the only option left. Of course he would bale on her and leave telling their 12 year old daughter, Maggie that they would be separating. On top of that she runs into Nate Milas, who was her date that threw up on her at her debute ball and Wendell has the nerve to have her served with divorce papers on the ferry! Thankfully her friend Parrish and her husband give her and Maggie a ride to their summer home; but, when they arrive the remote locks won’t work. Oh why couldn’t they just have normal locks? Then they find a notice tacked to the front door, the house is in Foreclosure. It is then that she looks at the papers she was served only to see they are also regarding the foreclosure. She has no choice, she, Maggie, and Mr. Banks, Maggie’s pug, head to Shutters, her family home on the island. There she finds her mother, Evelyn who is convinced this is all a big mistake. Wendell was close to a Saint in Evelyn’s book. Billy, Riley’s brother doesn’t share the same love for his brother-in law. Then Wendell turns up dead the next morning in the marina. It isn’t long before Riley and her best friend, Parrish, are snooping around trying to get some answers. Not only do they find that the house is in fact in foreclosure because Wendell took out a 2 million dollar mortgage but that he has set up numerous shell companies taking out additional multi-million dollar loans. And how does Melody Zimmerman, loan officer at the bank, fit into all of this? And then there is Nate Milas. She wants to like Nate but when she finds out he is buying up all the land in Wendell has allowed to fall into foreclosure, she is convinced all he wants to do is to develop it just like Wendell. When Annie, Wendell’s mama, spills to Parrish that instead he wants to donate the land to UNC for a marine study field to rebuild the oyster beds, Riley decides to give him a go. All is well until Maggie, a type 1 diabetic, decides to eat candy and drink coke and lands herself in a diabetic coma. Riley believes it is directly related to her being with Nate and breaks it off. Finally, as summer is coming to a close, a hurricane is baring down on the island. It is then they find out what really happened to Wendell.

⭐ “She’s got the face of an angel and the soul of a pit bull–piranha hybrid.”― Mary Kay Andrews, The WeekendersI was…..dare I say it..bored.I should have known. This book I heard about from someone whose tastes do not mat ch my own so that should have been the first clue. Everybody loved this! Every one but yours truly here who cannot figure it out.I tried. I really didBut I was really really bored. I can’t really say a lot about this book because I started to skim and then stopped reading altogether and then started skimming again… I really don’t like not finishing a book although I do have a list of DNF’S.But the thing that puzzled me about this book is that it’s bestseller. I am not trying to be overly negative. It is far from the worst book I’ve read. But I did feel like I missed something here. I am still trying to figure out what.It was way too slow moving for me. Also given that the whole story has a beach location I expected I would maybe be transported there. I adore books that have the ability to transport the reader to the location. And I do like books that are very atmospheric. And I love the ocean. But I didn’t get any of that with this one. I did not feel transported there. I just felt like I was reading book. And it is also billed as a mystery but It wasn’t scary in the slightest. Cozy mystery perhaps? I think it may have been more of a book that would appeal to cozy mystery fans and I am not an excessive reader of the genre so as a result this was not a book I really liked all that much. But also missing was the element of fun. OK..I guess this book just wasn’t for me. I do occasionally adore Women’s fiction but the slow pace, unrealistic story line and just overall generic feel put me off. Cannot say I was a fan of this one.

⭐ The over-indulged child really put me off. The parenting was so blatantly horrible it just became so annoying it overshadowed the story. So unless you like stories about horribly spoiled children skip this book.

⭐ Did not enjoy this book as I have all of the others. The thirteen year old daughter, Maggy, is such an unmitigated bitch, and so omnipresent that I just lost complete respect for the heroine, her mother. The love interest, Nate, has a very small role. , Now some might say that Maggy behaves badly because of the events in the book. But she is unbearable from the get go before any of those “events” happen. Trying to enjoy this book was trying to enjoy a meal in a restaurant when there is a screaming toddler at the next table. A little of that goes a long, long way.Not much southern flavor or humor in this book. Well, no one can have a home run with every book. I’ll still give her next book a try. But I hope she does not use obnoxious children as the main source of conflict again. Not what you crave when trying to de-stress.

⭐ Not worth the wait. My least favorite. Too much focus on the daughter with diabetes and too slow about the story of the murder. I started skimming paragraphs about page 30, something I have never done in ms. Andrew’s books.atories, I started

⭐ Took me long enough to pick this one back up but so glad time was finally on my side. I knew when I started this several months ago I would not be able to put it down but had to.Learning what life had in store for these characters was interesting. This was a great romance murder mystery. While I hoped Riley would end up with her true love, I never would have expected how her husband disappeared. This was a great book about love, relationships, family, friends, trust and mystery. It teaches you to stay close to those who are important to you and try to work things out no matter how hard they can get. It also shows that when you think you know someone you may just be judging them like we do with book covers so it is important to see past the exterior and take the time to get to know the true person inside.

⭐ I’ve read every single one of MKA’s books. I fell in love at Savannah Blues and have been obsessed ever since. There have been some books that she wrote that I felt had fallen flat but hey… You can’t win them all!! However, I REALLY loved this one. I could NOT put it down. I loved the character development and the storylines. The vividness of the setting and the descriptions of every small detail… I could smell the sea even! I will say that I read a lot of the negative reviews before posting mine just to get an idea of what others thought and wow the negativity!!! The overwhelming majority of the negative reviews were that this story was centered around the upper class and trust fund babies and “oh poor them… Let me show them what REAL struggle looks like”. Look y’all, people of ALL social classes can be described with having their own struggles, they’re all different… They’re also people, too. Admittedly, it was difficult to read how the daughter spoke to her mother (the main character) and to her grandmother and her overall awful attitude (as per a lot of the negative reviews)… But it was raw and honest. Pre-teens are awful. Ok, I loved the book. Thought it was fabulous.

⭐ The 17th of May is Norwegian Independence Day ( Mom was Norwegian), but this year it was starred because I knew I’d find The Weekenders in my mailbox. I am a fan of all Andrews’ books and also the ones she wrote as KathyTrocheck, but this has totally raised the bar. Riley Nolan Griggs speaks to all women, with pretty much everything we become enmeshed in—family, raising children-especially one with a chronic and at times life-threatening health issue,—diabetes, career setbacks, self image, and trying to do the right thing, which is not always what will bring personal happiness. Andrews makes this all real against a backdrop of a beautiful North Carolina island. And yes, we get back to Andrews’ mystery roots with a murder in the mix. My mail comes late and since Tuesday afternoon, I have resented all the interruptions (Work, laundry, cooking dinner) that kept me from this very special book. When it comes to this kind of novel, nobody does it better.
