Description
Cliff Hardy is stony broke, which makes it hard to resist a job from the man he’s been losing money to. Ted Tarleton is a rich bookie with a beautiful, spoiled daughter who’s gone missing, and Ted wants Hardy to find her. Her boyfriend is no help, and Hardy faces opposition from all sides as he delves into the increasingly violent wreckage of Noni’s past.

⭐ If you a ‘re looking for one of the heirs Hammet or Marlowe look no further. This Australian set work has all the style and world weary wisdom you could ever want.
⭐ Another laid back thriller from Corris with his great gumshoe/private eye getting beaten up, smashed about, whacked but still able to solve the puzzle towards the end. This hero works the sleazy parts of Sydney to great effect and nothing fazes him although he admits to being scared a fair bit. I like the way he gets around Sydney in his old Ford and you can just picture the streets and pubs which he attends. The good old days of smoking in pubs, rough characters, sleazy people trying to be toffs and their molls make for great reading.
⭐ This book was first published in 1981, and is a fascinating look into the fault lines between the European, and Aboriginal cultures existing in the period. The plot line is good, the characters convincing, and the pace fast. As an aside, how Cliff Hardymanages to function on what appears to be a diet consisting of alcohol and ‘rollies’ is a wonder of human physiology.
⭐ Corris’ Cliff Hardy escapades are always refreshing, compelling and dripping with Australian reference. Such a pleasure to wander the streets of Glebe in Hardy’s Falcon (and Corris’ next yarn) – always so comfortable and without having the read between lines…the ideal read whilst on holidays
⭐ Cliff hardy never fails to get into lots of trouble, fights and contentious issues . His humour just says it all to capture the moment and set the scene. Seedy Sydney drugs boxing ,racial issues all cross each other’s paths.
⭐ Rambling. Corris gets better, this is an early piece, best for its period-descriptors. Brings back good memories of Sydney – and Australian attitudes in the 1970’s
⭐ Not up to his usual standard ,like a lot of authors ,rushes the ending and leaves readers to fill in the gaps
⭐ One of the most disappointing Cliff Hardy books I have read. I have loved so many of them but this one for me was very boring
