Description

Some six or seven feet above the port bulwarks, framed in fog, and as utterly unsupported as the full moon, hung a Face. It was not human, and it certainly was not animal, for it did not belong to this earth as known to man’Rudyard Kipling, celebrated author of The Jungle Book, the Just So Stories and other entertaining fictions, was also a master of the short story in which he was able to combine the strange and unnerving in order to draw the reader into the world of his own dark imaginings. This collection presents the best of these strange tales in which ghosts, monsters and inexplicable happenings abound. From the exotic and magical locale of India, to the leafy suburbs of England and then to the blood-soaked trenches of the First World War, Kipling provides us with a chilling array of experiences and images which will linger long in the memory.

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐Having read many of the authors other works I knew what to expect. If the weirdness the British encountered during the Raj interests one it is a good fun read. If one has not read/studied the period or Kipling’s writings before I believe there are better books with which to begin. Be forewarned, it is definitely not “Jungle Book.” I would have given it 5 stars but 2 stories regarding “the children” were left out of the compilation. Otherwise, the stories definitely please..

⭐Rudyard Kipling is probably best remembered as a jingoist, British supremicist, and writer of some particularly bad poetry. Without apologizing, for the above criticisms are pretty much accurate, I suggest that readers also discover that Kipling had some level of affection and understanding for those diverse individuals (yes, “natives”) who made up the British Empire and that Kipling’s prose was good. This collection of supernatural fare includes a few of Kipling’s better short stories (at his best, he was a master), as well as some of more mixed quality. The dash of reverence with which he regards Indian folklore provides an intriguing atmosphere for the stories and offers a measure of balance for the air of British superiority which unfortunately pervades all but the best of Kipling’s writing.

⭐The stories are written from the viewpoint of someone living at that time in the British Empire. Understand that context and enjoy these stories. Some such as The Phantom Rickshaw are rightly seen as great stories. Some are a bit of a struggle but on the whole this is an enchanting set of stories that are as much about the concepts of loyalty, grief and love as horror fiction.

⭐Fantastic collection of dark tales. Rudyard Kipling writes the horror story as well as Clark Ashton Smith, Robert E Howard and H.P Lovecraft. That is saying a lot. Everyone knows kipling as the author of the Jungle books but don’t be fooled, he can write mean horror!

⭐As described, well packaged and promptly sent. By no means only a Poet Laureate he wrote many atmospheric short stories from comedic ‘skits’ to truly haunting supernatural tales.

⭐For those who appreciate tales of mystery and imagination this is THE book made for them. And those who love Kippling as well !NC.
