⭐ I am so glad that I gave this book a try. I stumbled upon it sort of by accident and decided to check it out. The synopsis had me intrigued but also a little worried because it was not explained the way your typical romance would be normally. I was not even sure at first if it was in the romace genre or just had a love story of some sort in it. I would say that this is definitely a solid romance but so different than the main stream we are so used to seeing these days (starting with the cover). It was like a breath of fresh air and the writing was wonderful. I pretty much read it in one sitting and when it was over I was almost tempted to read it again. The thing that I loved about this book so much was that it had all the great aspects of a great romance novel but non of the bad. It was not cheap or cliche. The main story line was interwoven into the love story so well and I just fell in love with all of the characters. The love scenes were sexy and passionate and I just fell in love with the way that Guy talked to Jules. This book was almost like peaking into what could be a very real person/families life but not in a boring or mundane way (if that makes sense). The ONLY thing that I was a little bummed about was the ending. I can’t give anything away but I would have liked there to have been more at the big “end scene”. The climax comes and then all of a sudden it is over and we are onto the epilogues (which went on way to long for my liking). Other than that this was a wonderful read and I hope to read more by these authors in the future!
⭐ So many things worked well for me in Abruption. First a big high 5 for the author to write about a couple over 30. There are not enough romance authors willing to take on this age group and it is very much appreciated! Dr. Guy Hunter is a single parent to two beautiful children one with special needs – little Finn. Jules is a pediatric nurse that has Finn as a patient and she is not impressed with the handsome and bossy Guy. Over time they find a civil working relationship and also are confused by their attraction to each other. Guy because he had a high maintenance dead wife and Jules because she had her own demons. Her demons we find out about much later and made me love her even more. Guy is a hot doctor and a hot dad. Who wouldn’t fall in love with him too?The story about life with a special needs child is compelling. We all get to know little Finny and Maxie and I would certainly want to gobble them up if I knew them in real life. The romance is steamy hot and we get to live through Jules imagining the incredibly sexy Guy. Why not a 5 star? Well first the cheese factor was pretty high. Along with the incredibly cute kids, the adults communication with the kids is extremely cutsy but to the extreme and didn’t seem realistic. I know this is really picky but Guy would call Jules “doll” and it just seemed so old fashioned. I would imagine Humphrey Bogart in the 1930’s talking to his girl instead of a modern man. Lastly, the author took on A LOT of childhood issues such as death of parent, special needs, abuse, step parenting and death. I believe it would have been better to focus on just a couple issues because most were glossed over instead of getting deeper and having more impact. However, still a great romance with heart,
⭐ Abruption by Riley MacKenzie3.5 stars!!“If you work hard in silence, your success will be the noise.”This was a book that will tug at your heart strings and contains two of the most adorable kids I have ever read about. There is nothing more rewarding than reading about a father that takes care of his kids and puts their lives before his own. Guy was a selfless father that you couldn’t help but fall in love with and this was his struggle to keep his family together while finding himself along the way.“People spend most of their lives believing fair is getting what you deserve, when in reality, fair is merely getting what you can handle.”Dr Guy Hunter thought he had it all, a beautiful wife and a beautiful baby. He was finally achieving the fruits of his labour and heading towards the career that he had dreamed and strived for, concentrating on the branch of medicine that he always felt had been his calling until it wasn’t. Fast forward four years and Guy is a struggling single father to two adorable children. He is still a doctor in a hospital but now his priorities have changed. It is all about the kids and one of them is very sick.Jules is a paediatric nurse and adores her job, her happy go lucky attitude is a hit with the kids and lights up the solemnest of faces. But underneath her bright and bubbly personality is a woman dealing with a whole heap of hurt of her own but she never lets it affect her work or the kids that she strives to save. It is in paediatrics that Jules meets Guy and they don’t exactly hit it off at first.Guy comes across as an arse, an arrogant arse at that too, his people skills are not the best but this is all a side effect from all the hurt and pain he still feels from his wife, he keeps himself to himself and his heart guarded. His son, Finn, was extremely untrusting but Jules broke through to him and brought smiles where there were only tears and it was this bond between patient and nurse that actually had Guy questioning himself, questioning Jules and once again questioning love.“Another reason to tack on to my growing list of why…why she could be my more.”This was a beautiful read at times as well as sad. There were tears of happiness as well as a few in sadness. But this book was uplifting too because even when you are at your lowest ebb there is always someone there to bring you back and for Guy and Jules, it was each other…as well as a crazy ass Italian family that will have you in hysterics. I had many a laugh out loud moment too, many from the crazy Italians but this goes to show the importance of family and their support. They are there to pick you up, give you advice and be the forever shoulder when you need one.“Your life is like this tree, deeply rooted, with a solid foundation and countless branches linking your past throes with future dreams. Every tree faces inevitable storms and strong winds testing the strength of its roots. Branches break; new ones grow. It will flower and leaves will fall. And from your tree new life will emerge. In the end, though, with purpose and perseverance your tree will prevail, and each will be beautifully individual and uniquely different. A full circle of such.”So why not a higher rating? For me, sometimes less is more and there was a lot going on in this book and for me personally I felt like some of it wasn’t necessary. It felt like plot devices were used but not explored or explained fully so it felt a little disjointed at times and affected the flow of reading for me. But, none the less, I thoroughly enjoyed Guy and Jules’s journey and Max and Finn, two of the most adorable kids EVER!Guy was the epitome of a perfect father and his love for those kids is one that will forever stay with me. He was totally adorable once he opened up and you couldn’t have wished for a better father for Max and Finn. Jules was another selfless person that you couldn’t help but love, despite her issues she made the most of the bad hand that she had been dealt and used her personal experiences to help others. Her relationship with Max and Finn was beautiful and tugged at every heart string. A beautiful read of finding love when you most need it and most of all family and everything that it encompasses.
⭐ I don’t do a lot of overly angsty books, because it forces my cold, black heart to feel things that I prefer to leave locked away. But, I’ve been drawn to this book for months and months (that’s how long it’s been hanging out on my TBR), and I finally took the plunge. Sometimes I make excellent decisions, and this plunge was one of them.A single father to two children, one of which has cerebral palsy, Dr. Guy Hunter has given up so much in his life, but in his eyes, every sacrifice has been worth it. His kids are the center of his universe, and there is nothing he wouldn’t do for them. He’s successful, he’s smoking hot, and he’s an awesome father. Already a winner in my book.Jules Chiapetti is a PICU nurse, and finds herself on end of Dr. Hunter’s ire as his son, Finn, lands in the ER for a fever, the source of which is unknown. Finn takes an immediate liking to Jules (and the feeling is 100% mutual), which begins to soften his father’s bad attitude toward her. A smidge.Guy and Juju (as Finn dubs her) begin to see one another in a new light after their initial meeting. He isn’t the Double Dick (her initial nickname for him) she once thought he was, and she isn’t the incompetent nurse he mistook her for originally. As a matter of fact, wait a minute, yep. There they are. SPARKS.I loved the relationship between Guy and Jules, because they worked their crap out. Yep. Like adults. Maybe not always right that minute, but dang it, they tackled their problems head on. And problems? They’ve got ’em. Between Finn’s ongoing medical issues and the baggage they both carry from the hands they’ve been dealt in the past, they’ve got plenty to work through. But work through they do. And they love. Beautifully. Unapologetically.I also loved the dialogue, because it felt so real. Sometimes sassy, sometimes sarcastic, sometimes dripping with thinly (or not even remotely) veiled innuendo. They felt like conversations I’ve had, or could see myself having.Bottom line: I loved this book. It was heartbreaking, beautiful, painful, joyous, and real. 5 stars for sure.
⭐ I read Abruption in one day, that’s how great it was. I cancelled all my plans for the day because I just needed to read this book without interruption. The story line was different and refreshing with a widowed surgeon bringing up 2 little children one which had special needs. I loved Dr Guy Hunters ‘voice’, and how much he loved his kids and Julie. He is definitely up there as one of my top BBF’sJuju was a great nickname for our heroine Julie. I loved her personality, her strength and her capacity to love and see the positive in everyone and every situation. The writing was amazing and I felt every emotion these talented authors were trying to convey with their words. I felt the love, the pain, the sorrow, the regret, the anger, the joy and the relief. There was no drama for drama sake and that to me is a must in the books I read. There is a twist and I did guess was it was but that in now way detracted from this story. It was really well done and I commend the authors on how it was weaved into this beautiful story.I can’t praise this book enough and recommend it to all.
⭐ The cover of Abruption had such an underlying symbolism that it instantly caught my attention. Coupled with its synopsis, I became even more intrigued and of course, I ended up one-clicking. The promise it held merely from its cover and synopsis was just an inkling of the story that transpired in its pages. Riley Mackenzie are both new authors for me and as many of you know, I’m not much of a risk taker when it comes to new authors. Most times, I stick with my “go to” authors decreasing any risk of literary disappoint. But this year, I’ve resolved to discover new authors and broaden my genre spectrum. Well, it goes to show that taking risks have an even greater payout because Riley Mackenzie have written a book that is so deeply emotional, I found myself sinking into a beautiful abyss of the best sort of second chances many in this world could only hope to have.Abruption was so much more than your typical love story between a man and a woman. Rather, it’s wonderful love story between a man and his kids and a woman who I felt is one of the best female protagonists I’ve come to know. Jules is innately selfless and caring even when her whole world had crumbled. She’s also wildly brave and loving—everything that Guy and his children needed in their lives. But the best sort of irony was that Guy and his children were also just what Jules needed in her life. They completed each other, becoming a family so worth the tears and the crosses they’ve all had to bare for years. This book touches on a couple of very sensitive topics. One that brought me to my knees strictly from the empathy that cursed through my entire being—my mind going to places that could hit so close to home for so many out there and my heart unable to cope with the understanding of what could be and what is for too many. The second disturbed me so greatly, it had my psyche prickling with unease because the mind can play such horrible tricks. So I forewarn you now of the sensitivity that comes alongside this book and with that, I also guarantee you of the beauty this book holds. It is extremely well versed in medical terminology—many times I had to grab for my smart phone and search for definitions as well. I’ve got to give praise to the authors for this because to me, it just shows that they know their sh*t and it gave a realistic impression to the serious tone of this book.Abruption was a surprise read, one that I will continue to use as a reminder to why I’d come up with my literary resolution in the first place. Riley Mackenzie, have put themselves in my “to be read” authors list with this hauntingly heartbreaking book and its hopeful message of redemption which can only be found in second chances.
⭐ I have to say that I really loved Abruption and like true Riley Mackenzie form, this book will grab at your heartstrings, keep you on your toes, make you blush, and leave you with hope. The Prologue was powerful and it completely set the tone for this book. I love how Guy and Jules were at the same place at the same time 4 years prior in Philly. It’s such a romantic notion… to think that you crossed paths with someone in the past that means so much to you in the present without ever have knowing or predicting what the future was to hold for you. It’s also a realistic notion that timing is everything. Had they met 4 years in the hospital, they were in completely different places in their lives and nothing would have ever evolved between them.I have read some reviews and some critiques on how quickly things transpired between Guy and Jules. I was widowed at the age of 32 and left a single mother of a 20 month-year-old son. It took a long time for me to get back out into the dating world. And when I finally did, I had many single dates. When you go through such a loss and are left with a child to care for, your perspective changes. You literally don’t have the time or energy for games. So when Guy met Jules, it was very realistic for him to have known that she was different. It was very realistic for their relationship to become so serious so quickly, especially because of the relationship that Jules established with his children so quickly and easily. I was so happy and engulfed by their budding romance that I didn’t pay attention to the hints and was completely blown away by Maya! Whaaaaat? I didn’t see that coming.I’m on to you Riley Mackenzie… I’m already looking forward to the next book and this time I’ll be looking for that twist! I think Lucca deserves a story… hair gel and all!
⭐ I love Guy Hunter! He was first introduced in Beautifully Awake (which is not necessary to read prior to this book) and back then, he was a laid back, hard working and fun loving resident. Fast forward to a few more years and the Guy in the present day is a much different man. For starters, he’s a single dad juggling 2 kids, one of which is special needs. His kids, Maxine and Finn, are absolutely adorable and impossible not to get attached to.Jules is the new assistant nurse manager for the pediatric wing of the hospital. Although she and Guy get off to a bit of a rough start initially, they manage to smooth things over. If anything, the way to Guy’s heart is through his kids and Jules manages to win Finn over pretty quickly. Jules has a reason for being so reserved and guarded when it comes to relationships. Guy doesn’t like putting all of his cards on the table because he has to think about his children, but when it comes to Jules, she doesn’t play by the typical rules so Guy finds himself reaching for his best hand.If you are not familiar with Riley Mackenzie’s stories, there are always surprises and twists to uncover along the way, and they tend to be emotionally packed. The characters tend to fight hard for their relationships and for what’s right because life isn’t easy. Abruption is no exception. The final shocker was actually something I spotted in advance, but it didn’t lessen the overall impact. I was still blown away and aghast, hoping it wasn’t true. The storyline and the characters are all very well portrayed in this one, the book moves at a fast, heart-thumping pace. The chemistry and the dynamics were all there, I just had trouble with connecting with Jules, but otherwise, this is a great story.
⭐ This was really really good. I loved every moment of this book. Guy (great name!) and Jules (JuJu) are amazing together. When they first meet Guy is a jerk to Jules, but I will excuse his behavior since you can tell he was stressed and defeated with his son’s situation. Jules, being the strong women that she is stood up for herself and put Guy in his place. I admire Jules a lot in this book. She wasn’t whinny or annoying, she was a strong women who went through a horrific tragedy. I am not sure if I would be able to do her job with what she went through, so I admire Jules for having such a huge heart. I felt so sorry for Guy. In the prologue, I felt for Guy and the sacrifice he had to make for his family. I also like how Jules “meet” Guy in the prologue before they actually meet. I will not give too much away, but I had a feeling a certain you know who was contributing to little man’s sickness. After the second incident, which that certain someone was around when it happened, I was alert from then. Especially, when Guy’s mother came to visit and everything went smooth, I knew from then something was up. Overall, this story was amazing. There is no BS drama, random breakup, or miscommunications. This story is about two people who have dealt with misfortunes in life who falls in love, while caring for two adorable children, and let me say those kids are too cute for words! Guy and Jules’ personalities are great, the children are adorable, and Jules’ father is hilarious. My ultimate favorite quote is from Guy, whose says “who loves ya?” **Swoon**
⭐ Main characters: Dr. Hunter a surgeon who just finished his residency.Maxine and Finn are Dr. Guy Hunters children. Finn was born with cerebral palsy. Maxine was born a premie. These children will melt your heart. The most loving and compassionate children. The children are easy to love. They easily open their hearts into accepting others into their family.Maya is Brittany’s cousin and a nanny and studying to become a nurse.Jules is Finn’s nurse. Jules is from an authentic Italian family. Jules masks her own pain by focusing and dedicating her time and energy to her job as a pediatric nurse. With careers in medicine it’s easy to understand why these authors chose to write about what is second nature to them. With that being said it will not surprise you that this story will contain medical jargon. The story included Dr. Hunter, Nurse Jules, and a sweet three year boy with cerebral palsy. Finn spent a great amount of time in and out of the hospital. The story began with Guy finishing up his residency and Brittany pregnant with Maxine. Guy had plans to start his career by moving to Stanford but Brittany changed his plans with news of her pregnancy. With Brittany expecting her second child so quickly after having Maxine she wanted to stay in NY to be close to her family. The story’s told from alternating POV’s between Guy and Jules.I fully prepared myself to read a story about Guy and Brittany instead the story flashed forward three years with unexpected circumstances. Once I got my head around the fact that this story was headed in a different direction I was pleasantly surprised. These characters had a unique connection which could only be shared by people who have shared in the pain of losing loved ones.In its layers is a story about characters who fight the hardships in life together. It’s a story about bringing people together through tragedy. These characters crossed each other’s paths for a reason.I was completely invested in the story up until the epilogues. At that point I felt the story rushed to reach the HEA. The entire tone of the story changed. The characters went from emotional suffering characters to elated characters. The authors handled the sensitive disease topics with great care. The information provided was eased into the story that allowed it to flow without bogging it down.
