Description

Stripped of his investigator’s licence and with his appeal denied, Cliff Hardy faces an uncertain future. Then something very personal happens that sends him off doing what he does best – confronting, questioning, provoking violence – with the lack of credentials not an issue.

Corris is a tried and true crime writer. Until you’ve read the Cliff Hardy series, you can’t call yourself an aficionado of Aussie detective fiction.’ – The Age

‘Hardy has grown into a vulnerable and engaging human being… Cheap motels are still his milieu.’ – The Weekend Australian

User’s Reviews

From Booklist In the latest in the long-running Cliff Hardy series, the Australian private investigator finds himself without a license, and with no chance of getting it back. Does that mean the straight-talking, working-class PI will have to stop solving crimes? Hardly. When Cliff’s investigative-reporter girlfriend is murdered, there’s just no way he is going to stand idly by, especially when the police appear to be covering up the motive for her murder. The Hardy series, which is nearly 25 years old, keeps evolving (just as its hero has grown over time), and Corris once again shows why he is among Australia’s premier crime-fiction authors. –David Pitt –This text refers to an alternate kindle_edition edition.

⭐ This tale of the investigation into the death of Lily Truscott – once close friend of legendary Australian PI Cliff Hardy and also highly successful local journalist – is a scintillating, gripping and fascinating example of a hard core detective coming to grips with current setbacks in life whilst coping with the death of a much loved partner. The reader does not get to spend much time with the deceased but it comes as a shock at the end of chapter one when we find out what has happened.Hardy has just lost his legal right to work as a PI in NSW and apart from an impressive property he owns in Glebe, he is penniless, career less and as a it turns out, pretty much friendless. We soon learn that Hardy and the brother of the deceased are the sole beneficiaries of the deceased’s estate but for some reason the police seem satisfied with superficial enquiries into the activities of the parties concerned. At the wake, rumours abound of police corruption as well as associated police criminality in relation to the death, and after a short conversation with a former colleague of Lily, our man Cliff agrees to look into the whole, sorry mess. The writing style is the usual fast paced, high quality action based scenario format used by only the world’s best crime writers. Moments of poignancy are to be found as bonuses to the terrific story telling. So in summary this is another highly recommended purchase in the world famous Cliff Hardy series.BFN Greggorio!

⭐ I have to admit that I always enjoy a Peter Corris novel about his crusty down to earth hero, Cliff Hardy. “Appeal Denied” was no exception. Corris writes about Sydney, where the novels are based, with a comfortable familiarity. Sydney is presented as a wonderful sometimes sleazy location. It provides an excellent backdrop to the world of private eyes, crime and a criminal underworld.”Appeal Denied” is the latest in a list of some two dozen Cliff Hardy novels. This time, Cliff is facing the end of the road. His appeal against being denied a PI licence is denied. His immediate prospects look bleak. Even more so when his lover is murdered and he is drawn into a web of intrigue and police doublecrossing and corruption. Cliff must use all his wits to keep his head above water.I once had an American friend who described the Cliff Hardy series as the quintessential Sydney novel. He was right. The novels eek Sydney through their pores. One can almost smell the saltiness of the harbour, the grime of its streets and the sweat of its inhabitants. Peter Corris has reproduced Sydney as a novel.I won’t spoil the plot for any readers of the review. Suffice to say that Cliff meets danger consistently and, by and large, triumphs. However, the book ends in such away that it’s not clear whether there will be a further book. I, for one, can only hope that Cliff Hardy still has more challenges to meet.
